However, it&#8217;s worth noting that vinyl sales \u200cdata,\u2062 starting\u2064 from 1991, may not fully reflect historical trends in vinyl sales.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<header> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/entertainment\/\">  Entertainment <\/a>  <\/p>\n<h2>Taylor Swift&#8217;s Controversial New Album Has Set Vinyl Sales Record: There&#8217;s One Major Caveat<\/h2>\n<p> <span> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/bchai\/\">  <\/a> <\/p>\n<p> <span>   By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/author\/bchai\/%20\"><span>Bryan Chai<\/span><\/a> <\/span> <span>   April 23, 2024 at 3:16pm <\/span> <\/span>  <\/header>\n<section>\n<p>For reasons that are still unclear to this writer, few modern musicians \u2014 if any \u2014 are as polarizing as Taylor Swift.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-stephen-smith-slams-taylor-swift-critics-shills-segment-earned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Those who love her<\/a>, the \u201cSwifties,\u201d offer her unwavering support no matter what she does, or even if she\u2019s an actual witch. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/poll-shows-trump-annihilate-taylor-swift-2024-election-beat-landslide-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Those who hate her<\/a> could see Swift walk on water, and they would point out she can\u2019t swim.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all a very outsized reaction to a woman who makes music for a living.<\/p>\n<p>But despite whatever confusion may exist as to why Taylor Swift engenders such strong emotions one way or another, it\u2019s inarguable that she does, so it\u2019s little surprise that when the 34-year-old released a new album on April 19, \u201cThe Tortured Poets Department\u201d quickly became a hot topic in the entertainment world.<\/p>\n<p>Clandestine social media feuds? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/taylor-swifts-feud-star-explodes-huge-change-social-media-follows-new-album-release-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Check<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Parents upset over dirty lyrics? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mothers-furious-dirty-lyrics-taylor-swifts-new-album-call-darkness-exposed-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Obviously<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Allegations of racism? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/taylor-swift-faces-fury-fans-sparks-backlash-racists-lyrics-many-things-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indeed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Self-comparisons to Jesus? I\u2019m not going to lie \u2014 I didn\u2019t see this one coming, but it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/taylor-swift-hits-new-low-compares-directly-jesus-new-album\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">definitely a thing that happened<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, there are many, many different ways to analyze \u201cThe Tortured Poets Department,\u201d as one can clearly tell from the above.<\/p>\n<div id=\"firefly-poll-container\">\n<p>Do you like the vinyl format?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Less than a week after the album\u2019s release, there\u2019s a new way to analyze the album, and it\u2019s certainly an interesting one: Vinyl sales.<\/p>\n<p>As reported on by both <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/music\/news\/vinyl-tortured-poets-department-breaks-record-weekly-sales-1235978774\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Variety<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/chart-beat\/taylor-swift-the-tortured-poets-department-first-day-sales-release-week-1235662005\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Billboard<\/a>, \u201cThe Tortured Poets Department\u201d sold over 700,000 vinyl copies in the three days following the album\u2019s release, breaking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nolte-biological-men-will-soon-dominate-every-female-sport\/\" title=\"Nolte: Biological Men Will Soon Dominate Every Female Sport\">record held<\/a> by\u2026 Taylor Swift.<\/p>\n<p>That 700,000 figure eclipses the 693,000 sold by \u201c1989 (Taylor\u2019s Version)\u201d when it came out on vinyl in late October 2023.<\/p>\n<p>(And for the morbidly curious, Swift also holds the previous vinyl sales record before \u201c1989,\u201d when she sold over 500,000 copies of \u201cMidnights\u201d on vinyl in 2022.)<\/p>\n<p>That is, to put it mildly, a lot of vinyl records sold by Swift.<\/p>\n<p>And while those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-administration-maintaining-nearly-one-billion-gun-sales-records-on-americans\/\" title=\"Biden Administration Maintaining Nearly One Billion Gun Sales Records On Americans\">sales records<\/a> are mighty impressive in and of themselves, it does gloss over a rather important caveat: Vinyl sales data isn\u2019t exactly comprehensive.<\/p>\n<p>In short, as both Variety and Billboard note, the tracking of vinyl sales constitutes the \u201cmodern era,\u201d which is just a fancy way of saying that vinyl sales data tracking has only existed in earnest since 1991\u2026 well after the proper heyday of vinyl records.<\/p>\n<p>Selling 700,000 vinyl records is impressive, period.
