Meanwhile, the operatives who invented a hoax accusing Trump of being a Russian asset in 2016, commissioned a dossier of fake oppo research, and shopped it to the FBI \u2014 which then used the shoddy \u201cresearch\u201d as a basis to illegally spy on the Trump campaign \u2014 have received a light tap on the wrist, if any punishment at all. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-16925139033602b960ea4747d68847dd fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-16925139033602b960ea4747d68847dd\"><\/div>\n<p>Marc Elias, the Clinton campaign lawyer who commissioned the discredited dossier, received no punishment. The DNC and the Clinton campaign \u2014 which together provided funds for oppo research firm Fusion GPS to hire former British spy Christopher Steele, who put his name on the so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/12\/even-after-offering-1m-fbi-never-got-corroboration-of-russia-dossier-they-used-to-spy-on-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steele dossier<\/a>\u201d \u2014 were <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/6243b3f8b001843f2379a673\/t\/624486ac6da88f37bd43e98d\/1648658094980\/MUR+7449+closing+letter+to+Coolidge+Reagan+Foundation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fined<\/a> $105,000 and $8,000, respectively, for labeling the payments as \u201clegal and compliance consulting\u201d and \u201clegal services.\u201d Clinton herself, who personally <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/20\/hillary-clinton-okd-sharing-trump-russia-data-campaign-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved<\/a> the decision to leak the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/roger-stone-announces-he-will-sue-those-who-arrested-him-and-put-him-in-front-of-a-kangaroo-court\/\" title=\"Roger Stone Announces He Will Sue Those Who Arrested Him and Put Him In Front of a Kangaroo Court\">false accusations<\/a> to the press, was still <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/21\/hillary-clinton-doubts-election-results-while-claiming-doing-so-is-treason\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suggesting<\/a> the 2016 election was \u201cstolen\u201d from her as recently as 2022 and has never received any repercussions for the Russia hoax.<\/p>\n<p>Russian national Igor <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/18\/spygate-101-a-primer-on-the-russia-collusion-hoaxs-years-long-plot-to-take-down-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Danchenko<\/a>, the \u201cprimary sub-source\u201d whose testimony Steele relied on in creating the dossier, \u201cfed Steele false information about the Trump campaign, which a Clinton booster had invented.\u201d Danchenko was indicted by Special Counsel John Durham for lying to the FBI about a 2016 phone call he <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/19\/media-shame-durham-after-danchenko-verdict-but-its-russia-hoaxers-who-should-be-embarrassed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a> he received from an anonymous person who he thought was Sergei Millian. Danchenko claimed the anonymous caller revealed a \u201cconspiracy of cooperation\u201d between Trump and the Russians. These claims were added to the Steele dossier. <\/p>\n<p>Evidence presented to the jury, as The Federalist\u2019s Margot Cleveland noted at the time, indicated that \u201cDanchenko did not know Millian and had not received any telephone calls during the relevant time frame that might fit the description of the call Danchenko claimed he received.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, a jury in a deep-blue Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C. <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/19\/media-shame-durham-after-danchenko-verdict-but-its-russia-hoaxers-who-should-be-embarrassed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acquitted<\/a> Danchenko in 2022.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-cba91cf992eb5e6189beafb0aed95fa4 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-cba91cf992eb5e6189beafb0aed95fa4\"><\/div>\n<p>Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann was also acquitted, despite evidence suggesting he lied to then FBI-General Counsel James Baker in 2016. Sussman \u201cpresented Baker with data and whitepapers that supposedly showed the existence of a secret communications network between the Russian-based Alfa Bank and the Trump organization,\u201d Cleveland <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/27\/why-the-jury-should-convict-michael-sussmann-of-lying-to-the-fbi-but-probably-wont\/\">explained<\/a>. \u201cAccording to the indictment [from Special Counsel John Durham], Sussmann was acting on behalf of the Clinton campaign and tech executive Rodney Joffe when he met with Baker, but falsely told his friend that he was coming on his own behalf to help the FBI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The only person who received any sentence was former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith, who pleaded <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/08\/14\/kevin-clinesmith-corrupt-fbi-attorney-who-falsified-carter-page-fisa-warrant-expected-to-plead-guilty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guilty<\/a> to forging an email to get a warrant to spy on the Trump campaign. Clinesmith, according to Federalist CEO Sean Davis\u2019 reporting on Inspector General Michael Horowitz\u2019s findings, \u201caltered an email from a separate U.S. federal agency, believed to be the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), to falsely state that [Trump campaign affiliate Carter] Page had never worked with the CIA to investigate suspected Russia agents operating within the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact,\u201d Davis wrote, \u201cas Clinesmith was told by the operative, Page had worked with the CIA previously, as well as with the FBI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clinesmith was <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/national-security\/536501-ex-fbi-lawyer-sentenced-to-1-year-probation-for-altering-email-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sentenced<\/a> to 400 hours of community service and one year of probation. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-769e28a42b5717898638e5cf6131ada0 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-769e28a42b5717898638e5cf6131ada0\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">    \t\t\t\t\t   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Manhattan prosecutors alleged Trump orchestrated a criminal scheme to corrupt the 2016 election, aiming to sway the jury.
