The EEOC alleges that Sheetz disproportionately excludes black, Native American, and Alaska Native\u200c applicants due to their criminal \u2064records.\u2062 The lawsuit claims a violation\u200c of Title \u2063VII of the \u2064Civil Rights Act of 1964, which \u2064prohibits employment discrimination \u200dbased on race. Gas station\u200c chain Sheetz is under legal scrutiny as the EEOC sues them for \u2062discriminating against black, Native American, and\u200d Alaska Native job\u200b applicants based on criminal records. The lawsuit asserts a\u200c breach of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of \u20621964,\u2064 which\u2064 prohibits race-based \u2063employment discrimination.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/gas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Gas<\/a> station chain Sheetz has been sued for conducting criminal background checks on its job applicants.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>lawsuit<\/a> was filed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and lists Sheetz, Inc.; Sheetz Distribution Services, LLC; and CLI Transport, LP as the defendants. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/newsroom\/eeoc-sues-sheetz-inc-racially-discriminatory-hiring-practice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>EEOC says that Sheetz<\/a> has disproportionately screened out black, Native American, Alaska Native, and multiracial applicants from its hiring process due to the chain not hiring applicants with criminal conviction records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal law mandates that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-files-lawsuit-against-gas-station-chain-the-same-day-he-was-mocked-for-shuffling-into-it\/\" title=\"Biden sues <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nationwide-gas-station-chain-slashing-prices-ahead-of-labor-day-weekend\/\" title=\"Nationwide Gas Station Chain Slashing Prices Ahead Of Labor Day Weekend\">gas station chain<\/a> after being mocked for visit&#8221;>employment practices causing<\/a> a disparate impact because of race or other protected classifications must be shown by the employer to be necessary to ensure the safe and efficient performance of the particular jobs at issue,\u201d EEOC Regional Attorney Debra M. Lawrence said. \u201cEven when such necessity is proven, the practice remains unlawful if there is an alternative practice available that is comparably effective in achieving the employer\u2019s goals but causes less discriminatory effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>These are the gas prices at a Sheetz store in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, on March 7, 2022. Puskar)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>EEOC\u2019s lawsuit specifically claims that Sheetz is violating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/statutes\/title-vii-civil-rights-act-1964#:~:text=Title%20VII%20prohibits%20employment%20discrimination,several%20sections%20of%20Title%20VII.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964<\/a>, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin. However, the lawsuit does not allege that the gas station chain was motivated by race when making its hiring decisions.<\/p>\n<p>This new lawsuit was filed on Thursday, just a day after President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Joe Biden<\/a> made a stop at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc27.com\/pennsylvania\/president-biden-caps-pennsylvania-road-trip-with-sheetz-run\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>one of Sheetz\u2019s locations in Pittsburgh<\/a>. Biden had been in the Keystone State to campaign in several major cities for his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>2024<\/a> reelection run.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSheetz does not tolerate discrimination of any kind,\u201d Nick Ruffner, a public relations manager for Sheetz, said in a statement to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cDiversity and inclusion are essential parts of who we are. We take these allegations seriously. We have attempted to work with the EEOC for nearly eight years to find common ground and resolve this dispute. We will address the claims in Court when the time comes.\u201d   <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Sheetz introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/jobs.sheetz.com\/belonging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>the IDEA Initiative<\/a>, with IDEA being an acronym for \u201cInclusion, Diversity, Equity &#038; Accessibility.\u201d The chain\u2019s website states that it launched this initiative to increase its focus on creating an inclusive workplace.<\/p>\n<p>Sheetz has <a href=\"https:\/\/jobs.sheetz.com\/our-locations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>over 600 locations<\/a> across Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland.
