Despite the failure of a border security bill, a $95 billion foreign \u2063aid bill passed with limited Democratic support, initiating discussions within the party about compromise and bipartisanship.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>House<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/freedom-caucus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> Freedom Caucus<\/a> members are punching back at their Republican colleagues after being accused over the weekend of costing the GOP key policy wins on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/border-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>border security<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Certain Republicans blamed hard-liners\u2019 tactics for allowing Ukraine aid to be approved in a bipartisan way in the House over the weekend without border concessions attached.<\/p>\n<p>The House did have a separate border security bill, but it failed to make it out of the GOP-controlled Rules Committee last week. As a result, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-gov-abbott-signs-1-8b-border-bill-says-was-forced-to-due-to-bidens-inaction\/\" title=\"Texas Gov. Abbott signs .8B border bill, says was forced to due to Biden\u2019s inaction\">border bill<\/a> then fell short of the two-thirds threshold it would have needed to pass on the House floor under suspension of the rules. In contrast, the $95 billion foreign aid bill made it out of the Rules Committee with rare Democratic support after three GOP members opposed the effort and passed with a simple bipartisan majority on the House floor on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u00a0were a true conservative, you would actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sinema-and-gonzales-to-visit-arizona-border-as-congress-stalls-on-immigration-reform\/\" title=\"Sinema and Gonzales to visit Arizona border as Congress stalls on immigration reform\">advance border security<\/a>, but what they want to do is they want to blow up border security,\u201d Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY)<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/04\/22\/house-republicans-greene-border-security-foreign-aid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> told<\/a> <em>Axios<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A second member, who spoke with Axios anonymously, said the Freedom Caucus was turning lawmakers into the \u201cmost bipartisan Congress ever \u2026 because they are unwilling to compromise just a little bit in a divided government, they force us to make bigger concessions and deals with the Dems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Freedom Caucus members, including Rules Committee Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), defended his tactics and his vote against Ukraine aid. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith regard to Ukraine \u2013 there is no monolithic block of \u2018anti-Ukraine\u2019 aid \u2013 there are varying opinions, but informed by (in addition to America\u2019s border first): 1) we have already spent most of $113BB on Ukraine, and only about $45BB of that went to \u2018lethal aid,\u2019 and this is for another $60BB, 2) There will almost certainly be future requests, including rebuilding,\u201d Roy wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chiproytx\/status\/1782425625002713240\" title>post<\/a> to X on Monday morning, adding that the United States has engaged in \u201cendless borrowing\u201d for conflicts and does not know what the end result of the financing will be.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepDanBishop\/status\/1781860293850583233\" title>statement<\/a> Saturday evening that leadership \u201cnever proposed to attach any border security measure\u201d to the Ukraine bill but a \u201ccosmetic vote to give cover that the Senate would have been free to ignore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH) on Sunday backed Bishop\u2019s claim that the border proposal was never attached to the rules vote, which makes the rules vote failing irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who wanted to force a Senate vote on border security were betrayed by the surrender of leverage, not by opposition to the rule,\u201d Davidson wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WarrenDavidson\/status\/1782030160012730568\" title>post<\/a> to X. \u201cA substantial number of foreign aid supporters felt real border security policy changes (like HR2) would further delay foreign aid because the Senate would use it as an excuse not to bring up the House bill \u2013 which was sent back to the Senate as a literal amendment to the Senate foreign aid bill. The Speaker agreed with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) should have attached the border measures to the rule vote, which would have forced a clear vote on it, Davidson said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), a former Freedom Caucus member, called the vote another \u201cbetrayal\u201d by Johnson for the \u201cbulls***\u201d he pulled on the House floor Saturday but said she would not push a motion for him to vacate the speakership at this point in time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s some people that are, that are rash and irresponsible and do things like what happened last time? I\u2019m not that person. I didn\u2019t come here to Congress to, to actually hurt our institution, hurt our majority,\u201d Greene told reporters outside the Capitol on Saturday. \u201cI\u2019m handling this the right way and so I\u2019m allowing the process to happen. \u2026 Mike Johnson is a lame duck.
