Opposition warns of unintended consequences on laws safeguarding minors and vulnerable \u200cgroups. \u2063GOP\u200d shifts focus from\u2062 abortion, emphasizing broader\u200b implications and \u2062<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/newsom-recall-petition-close-to-success\/\" title=\"Newsom Recall Petition Close To Success\">parental rights<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>With the Equal Rights Amendment on the ballot this November, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>New York<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democratic-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Democrats<\/a> are hopeful that more voters will turn out to vote in favor of protecting abortion rights, but state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republican-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Republicans<\/a> are highlighting possible ramifications of the amendment, such as the removal of a drinking age.<\/p>\n<p>The ERA includes a dozen potential new protected classes such as age, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mayo-clinic-debuts-woke-policies-including-wearable-pronoun-buttons\/\" title=\"Mayo Clinic Debuts Woke Policies Including Wearable Pronoun Buttons\">gender expression<\/a>, pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes, and reproductive healthcare and autonomy. Groups opposing the amendment, such as Protect Kids NY, argue that the measure will open up Pandora\u2019s box by weakening laws meant to protect against elderly abuse, statutory rape, and minors choosing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/aclu-sues-abbott-over-directive-to-investigate-transgender-procedures-as-child-abuse\/\" title=\"ACLU Sues Abbott Over Directive To Investigate Transgender Procedures As Child Abuse\">receive gender-affirming care<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Abortion-rights activists hold signs during a protest following the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to overturn Roe v. (AP Photo\/Yuki Iwamura)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s take a moment and ask ourselves some questions about what it means to be able to \u2018discriminate\u2019 based on things like age,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.protectkidsny.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Protect Kids NY<\/a> says on its website.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans in New York are steering away from highlighting abortion, recognizing the nationwide trend in elections since <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> was overturned in 2022. What they see is a different way to oppose the ERA. <\/p>\n<p>New York GOP Chairman Ed Cox <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/04\/21\/abortion-rights-new-york-00153492\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>considers the topic<\/a> of abortion to be a settled issue in the state, which has among the strongest abortion protections in the country. (AP Photo\/File, Richard Drew)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cTo have a minor have a sex change without parental consent \u2014 that\u2019s really shocking,\u201d he told <em>Politico<\/em>. \u201cIssues like that are issues that I think may in the end be more important than the abortion issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> reached out to the New York Democratic Party for comment.<\/p>\n<p>With the margins for victory in the House very slim, Democrats are looking to use the abortion issue to bring out more voters in order to tip majority control in their favor.\u00a0But Protect Kids Executive Director Greg Garvey sees the effort as a \u201cploy\u201d stretching beyond abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew York has the most liberal policies in the country,\u201d Garvey told the outlet. \u201cThe idea that suddenly these laws are going anywhere is surely political theater. This is a GOTV [Get Out The Vote] ploy by the governor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ERA is facing a legal challenge from Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes, who argues that the amendment was rushed through by state Democrats. According to the state\u2019s constitution, the legislature needs to give the attorney general 20 days to review amendments before voting on them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was introduced and voted on on the same day in both houses,\u201d Byrnes said. \u201cIn order to amend the constitution, the majority violated the constitution.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In 1975, the first rendition of the Equal Rights Amendment failed to pass in New York, thus contributing to the ERA\u2019s failure to be ratified at the federal level.
