On Friday, the Department of the Interior (DOI) issued twin rulings to impose \u201cmaximum protections\u201d banning oil exploration in 13 million acres in the western Arctic and deny permits for a 211-mile road the state wanted to build to a colossal copper deposit worth an estimated $<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/19\/climate\/biden-alaska-drilling-mining-nrpa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">7.5 billion<\/a>. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1434150178\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-bd7a29ce642fb2507fed93854448c4e9 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-bd7a29ce642fb2507fed93854448c4e9\"><\/div>\n<p>Interior Secretary Deb Haaland cited \u201cindigenous knowledge\u201d behind the administration\u2019s decision to ban oil and gas production in an area larger than <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Federal_land_ownership_by_state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">twice the size <\/a>of Massachusetts, despite record-high energy prices across the United States. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no question, using the best available science and incorporating Indigenous Knowledge practiced over millennia, that these decisions will help biological, cultural, historic and subsistence resources, safeguarding the way of life for the Indigenous people who have called this special place home since time immemorial,\u201d Haaland said. <\/p>\n<p>Indigenous knowledge is a highly subjective metric, and it\u2019s now the target of a scientific integrity <a href=\"https:\/\/protectpublicstrust.org\/in-the-news\/biden-administrations-embrace-of-indigenous-knowledge-in-alaska-leases-sparks-controversy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">complaint <\/a>from the non-profit government watchdog Protect the Public\u2019s Trust. Rival tribes in Alaska, for example, have competing interests regarding resource development and their feuds are <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/06\/23\/how-the-left-is-exploiting-tribal-hypocrisy-on-oil-leases-in-the-arctic-national-wildlife-refuge\/\">exploited <\/a>by far-left interests. <\/p>\n<p>Blocking road access to the Ambler Mining District in the northwest Arctic is akin to the White House blocking a road from Austin to Dallas to keep the entire metropolitan areas between the cities untouched. The <a href=\"https:\/\/ambleraccess.org\/Portals\/ambler\/Images\/Home\/rare_earth_full.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">road<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/pressreleases\/trump-administration-supports-alaskan-infrastructure-development-mine-critical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">greenlighted<\/a> under the Trump administration in 2020, traverses Alaska\u2019s Brooks Range lands managed by the state, the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and native corporations. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8aba13fb313134e8e28429a36e13f209 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8aba13fb313134e8e28429a36e13f209\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/04\/16\/biden-set-to-block-mining-road-in-alaska-wilderness-00152592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twenty-six<\/a> miles of the scrapped road project was proposed to cross the Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, a nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/gaar\/learn\/what-is-gates-of-the-arctic.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">8.5-million-acre<\/a> swath of land under some of the nation\u2019s most stringent federal protections. The park and preserve are <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Federal_land_ownership_by_state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">larger <\/a>than the entire state of Maryland. <\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the Biden administration is demanding Americans buy expensive, resource-intensive electric vehicles manufactured with the very minerals the White House has prevented Alaskans from harvesting. On Thursday, attorneys general from half of the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/18\/more-than-two-dozen-ags-sue-biden-administration-over-ev-mandate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sued <\/a>the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to stop regulations that would force car makers to sell more electric vehicles. The supply chain for minerals essential to electric car manufacturing remains <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/05\/even-this-left-wing-report-sounds-the-alarm-u-s-is-way-too-dependent-on-communist-china-for-minerals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dominated <\/a>by China. <\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s latest decisions in Alaska follow moves last year to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/09\/07\/biden-cancels-all-remaining-leases-congress-issued-in-arctic-refuge-further-gutting-american-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">terminate <\/a>oil and gas leases in the nearly 1.6 million-acre stretch of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) previously opened for drilling and a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/14\/biden-is-trying-to-have-it-both-ways-on-arctic-drilling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">preemptive ban<\/a> on extraction for nearly 16 million acres. <\/p>\n<p>With more than <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Federal_land_ownership_by_state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60 percent<\/a> of the nation\u2019s largest state already controlled by the federal government, this writing was on the wall from the moment President Biden took office. The Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/07\/14\/climate\/tongass-roadless-rule-alaska.html\">halted<\/a> logging plans in the state\u2019s southeast Tongass National Forest, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/06\/01\/biden-to-cancel-oil-and-gas-leases-in-alaskan-arctic-national-wildlife-refuge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shut down<\/a> more opportunities for Arctic drilling, and launched the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2021\/5\/7\/22423139\/biden-30-by-30-conservation-initiative-historic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30 by 30<\/a>\u201d initiative to ban from everyday Americans\u2019 use 30 percent of the nation\u2019s lands and waterways by 2030. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e1f0e8c73678af3489f3fc5cf9727831 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e1f0e8c73678af3489f3fc5cf9727831\"><\/div>\n<p>Biden\u2019s Department of the Interior even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/pressreleases\/secretary-haaland-issues-statement-regarding-land-exchange-izembek-national-wildlife\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refused <\/a>to allow residents of the isolated southwest Alaskan village of King Cove to build a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/04\/29\/what-has-murkowskis-vote-for-deb-haaland-done-for-alaska\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">12-mile<\/a> road across the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge.
