Lawmakers call for Shafik&#8217;s prompt resignation to restore order and ensure student safety, joining a nationwide call for more protection for Jewish students on college campuses.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>New York<\/a> House Republicans are demanding that <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/columbia-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Columbia University<\/a> President Minouche Shafik resign from her position as pro-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/palestinian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Palestinian<\/a> protests erupt on the campus ahead of Passover, a <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/jewish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Jewish<\/a> holiday. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>House Republican<\/a> Conference\u00a0Chairwoman <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/elise-stefanik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Elise Stefanik<\/a> (R-NY) led a letter sent to Shafik on Monday saying the president should step down \u201cfor failing to put an end to an unsanctioned mob of students and agitators\u201d involved in antisemitic incidents and calls for violence against Jewish students.<\/p>\n<p>The letter comes after clashes between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel demonstrators led to calls to protect Jewish students from several local and federal lawmakers and political figures. A Columbia University rabbi\u00a0encouraged Jewish students to go home because the school could not guarantee the safety of the students. Claudia Tenney, Mike Lawler, Nicole Malliotakis, Nicholas Langworthy, Anthony D\u2019Esposito, Brandon Williams, Nick LaLota, Andrew Garbarino, and Marc Molinaro wrote in the letter that Shafik has failed to protect Jewish students \u201cby every measure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past few days, anarchy has engulfed the campus of Columbia University,\u201d the lawmakers wrote. \u201cAs the leader of this institution, one of your chief objectives, morally and under law, is to ensure students have a safe learning environment. By every measure, you have failed this obligation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers claimed that the unrest on Columbia\u2019s campus is a \u201cdirect product\u201d of Shafik\u2019s policies and \u201cmisguided decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Representatives from the State of New York, many of our constituents are directly impacted by the unfolding chaos on Columbia\u2019s campus,\u201d the Republicans wrote. \u201cBased on these recent events and your testimony in front of Congress, we have no confidence in your leadership of this once esteemed institution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is time for Columbia University to turn the page on this shameful chapter,\u201d the lawmakers continued. \u201cThis can only be done through the restoration of order and your prompt resignation. We, the undersigned members, urge you to step down immediately so that someone who will take action against this mob can step up to meet the moment this crisis demands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The New York Republicans join several other congressional lawmakers calling for more protections for Jewish students at Columbia and other universities across the country. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) demanded on Monday that President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/2974026\/hawley-demands-biden-send-national-guard-protect-jewish-students-colleges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>deploy the National Guard<\/a> to college campuses to ensure the safety of Jewish students. <\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, House Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) sent a letter to Shafik scolding her for the \u201congoing chaos\u201d at Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColumbia\u2019s continued failure to restore order and safety promptly to campus constitutes a major breach of the University\u2019s Title VI obligations, upon which federal financial assistance is contingent, and which must immediately be rectified,\u201d the Republican chairwoman wrote. \u201cIf you do not rectify this danger, then the Committee will not hesitate in holding you accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stefanik has taken congressional action on instances of antisemitism on college campuses that resulted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2445423\/upenn-president-resigns-in-the-wake-of-controversial-testimony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"resignation\">resignation<\/a> of University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill in December last year and Harvard President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/education\/2710097\/harvard-president-claudine-gay-resigns-following-weeks-of-scandal-and-scrutiny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Claudine Gay\u2019s resignation in January<\/a>. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Dan Goldman (D-NY), and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) \u2014 arrived at Columbia\u2019s campus on Monday to meet with Jewish students.<\/p>\n<p>Gottheimer called the protests a \u201cnew low\u201d during a press conference outside Columbia\u2019s Kraft Center for Jewish Student Life.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, Moskowitz said that if Shafik wants to know \u201cwhat not to do, she should call the former Presidents of Harvard and UPenn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moskowitz spoke directly to Shafik during Monday\u2019s press conference, saying, \u201cWe\u2019ve seen this show before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s one theme that keeps coming up over and over again, which is the double standard,\u201d Moskowitz said of his conversations with Jewish parents. \u201cThey know, and you know, deep down, if this was any minority group, this wouldn\u2019t be happening. It wouldn\u2019t have gotten this far, but because it\u2019s Jews, we\u2019ve fallen into this weird category: Oh, we\u2019re not protected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why antisemitism is on the rise.
