This move\u200d is geared towards\u200b improving the\u200b care standards for elderly residents.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Vice President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Kamala-Harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Kamala Harris<\/a> announced on Monday that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Biden<\/a> administration has finalized the first-ever minimum staffing requirements for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nursing-homes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>nursing homes<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The move comes after the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw advocates for the elderly reporting poor living conditions for residents in which they\u2019d go hours without meals and water and were not kept properly clean. The pandemic claimed the lives of more than 167,000 nursing home residents, and afterward, there was a dramatic drop in staffing.<\/p>\n<p>The rule will require all Medicaid- and Medicare-funded facilities to provide a total of at least 3.48 hours of care per resident per day. This means that a facility with 100 residents would need at least two or three registered nurses, 10 or 11 aides, and two additional nursing staff per shift, according to a White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2024\/04\/22\/fact-sheet-vice-president-harris-announces-historic-advancements-in-long-term-care-to-support-the-care-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"fact sheet.\">fact sheet.<\/a> The rule, proposed back in September, looks to address unsafe care practices\u00a0found in understaffed nursing homes and also to ensure that \u201cworkers aren\u2019t stretched too thin,\u201d the White House said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen facilities are understaffed, residents may go without basic necessities like baths, trips to the bathroom, and meals \u2014 and it is less safe when residents have a medical emergency,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mexico-sues-u-s-gun-companies\/\" title=\"Mexico Sues U.S. Gun Companies\">fact sheet read<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-york-covid-19-nursing-home-death-toll-soars-in-new-disclosure\/\" title=\"New York COVID-19 Nursing Home Death Toll Soars In New Disclosure\">nursing home operators<\/a> say they are already struggling to fill positions, and there is a fear that the mandate could cause facilities to close. <\/p>\n<p>An analysis by the American Health Care Association, which represents 14,000 nursing homes that care for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-epa-tightens-screws-on-coal-plants\/\" title=\"Biden EPA Tightens Screws on Coal Plants\">5 million people annually<\/a>, found this mandate would require nursing homes to hire more than 100,000 additional nurses and nursing aides. This would come at an annual cost of $6.8 billion. The analysis also found that 94% of homes failed to meet at least one staffing requirement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen nearly every nursing home in the country would be considered out of compliance if this went into effect today, it demonstrates how out of touch Washington bureaucrats are with reality,\u201d Mark Parkinson, the CEO of the American Health Care Association\/National Center for Assisted Living, said in a statement. \u201cWe all want to grow the nursing home workforce, but this impossible policy is absolutely not the way to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mandate did not require Congress\u2019s approval, but a bipartisan Senate bill would prohibit the Department of Health and Human Services from finalizing the rule.
