Perry,\u200b a \u2062DEI leader, is under scrutiny for alleged plagiarism \u2062in her dissertation, prompting doubts about the institution&#8217;s dedication to \u2062diversity\u2064 and academic\u2063 honesty.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>Recent headlines about UCLA School of Medicine suggest that the institution has lost its focus.\u00a0Instead of brushing up on organic chemistry, its students were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ben-shapiro-reveals-how-ucla-med-students-are-taught-anti-white-anti-american-hatred\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subjected<\/a> to lessons on \u201cIndigenous womxn\u201d and \u201ctwo-spirits.\u201d Future doctors had to take a class on \u201cstructural racism\u201d and were led in a \u201cFree Palestine\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/ucla-med-school-requires-students-to-attend-lecture-where-speaker-demands-prayer-for-mama-earth-leads-chants-of-free-palestine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chant<\/a> by a Hamas-praising guest speaker. The school made plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/ucla-school-of-medicine-antiracism-course-do-no-harm-office-of-civil-rights-8143c3ae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">segregate students<\/a> by race for courses on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/student-suspended-from-education-program-for-saying-a-man-is-a-man-a-woman-is-a-woman\/\" title=\"Student Suspended From Education Program For Saying, \u2018A Man Is A Man, A Woman Is A Woman\u2019\">left-wing ideology<\/a>, and two of its psychiatry residents championed <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/revolutionary-suicide-ucla-psychiatrists-cheer-self-immolation-in-leaked-audio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201crevolutionary suicide.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Why has the school charted this course? One reason is its commitment to diversity, equity, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/deis-ignoble-lie\/\" title=\"DEI's Ignoble Lie\">inclusion ideology<\/a>. UCLA has a DEI program called \u201cCultural North Star,\u201d and at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/student-finds-elusive-treasure-of-gold-gemstones-and-pre-columbian-artifacts-stashed-in-rocky-mountains\/\" title=\"Student Finds Elusive Treasure of Gold, Gemstones and Pre-Columbian Artifacts Stashed in Rocky Mountains\">medical school<\/a>, it is led by Natalie J. Perry. Her <a href=\"https:\/\/medschool.ucla.edu\/people\/natalie-j-perry-phd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official biography<\/a> says her job is to \u201cembed our aspirational Cultural North Stars [sic] value [sic] in our organizational DNA.\u201d UCLA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/story.php\/?story_fbid=829852155850799&#038;id=100064780655815\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">honored<\/a> Perry last month for teaching students to \u201cdo what\u2019s right,\u201d saying her \u201cempathy and radical listening\u201d are to thank for her \u201csuccess as an educator and a leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a\u00a0Daily Wire\u00a0and\u00a0City Journal\u00a0investigation, however, Perry\u2019s academic career is based on fraud. Perry has published a single paper, a 2014 Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Virginia about how colleges should create larger DEI programs. An analysis of the paper found it ridden with the worst sort of plagiarism, reproducing large swaths of text directly from several other authors, without citations. The scale of the plagiarism suggests that Perry lacks both ethics and competence and raises questions about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/black-high-school-students-in-oregon-offered-black-student-graduation-ceremony-this-spring\/\" title=\"Black High School Students In Oregon Offered \u2018Black Student Graduation Ceremony\u2019 This Spring\">academic programs<\/a> that push DEI.<\/p>\n<p>Perry\u2019s dissertation lifted passages from ten other papers. In key portions of her text, she copied almost every paragraph from other sources without attribution. She fails even to mention at least four of the ten plagiarized papers anywhere in her dissertation.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s review some examples.<\/p>\n<p>The first three pages of Perry\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/libraetd.lib.virginia.edu\/public_view\/wd375w520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paper<\/a>, \u201cFaculty Perceptions of Diversity at a Highly Selective Research-Intensive University,\u201d suggest that she did not even bother to read beyond the first page of papers from which she stole. Her dissertation\u2019s second sentence reproduces verbatim part of a sentence on the first page of a paper by Adrianna Kezar, Peter Eckel, Melissa Contreras-McGavin, and Stephen John Quaye. Her third paragraph, without citation, lifts more than 100 words from the first page of a paper by Angela Locks, Sylvia Hurtado, Nicholas Bowman, and Leticia Oseguera.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image\"><\/div>\n<p>Each colored portion of the below text was taken from a different author:<\/p>\n<div class=\"image\"><\/div>\n<p>In some cases when Perry did include parenthetical citations, she wasn\u2019t citing the papers whose text she had lifted. Instead, she simply reproduced the citations included in those stolen excerpts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image\"><\/div>\n<p>Take the above paragraph, which ends with \u201c(Bernard, 2005; Bollag, 2005; Munoz, Jasis, Young, and McLaren, 2004; Williams, Nakashima, Kich, and Reginald, 1996).\u201d Perry was not synthesizing those authors. Instead, the citation was part of Adalberto Aguirre and Ruben Martinez\u2019s paper, which she copied without attribution.<\/p>\n<p>A core part of Perry\u2019s dissertation involved summarizing work done by professors Robert Quinn and John Rohrbaugh. Instead of citing them directly, however, Perry cribbed summaries from other academics. Perry copied and pasted almost all of a nearly thousand-word passage from a <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2011-00494-001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paper<\/a> by Chad Hartnell, Amy Yi Ou, and Angelo Kinicki, without quoting or crediting the authors.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image\"><\/div>\n<p>The rest of Perry\u2019s analysis of Quinn and Rohrbaugh\u2019s work is largely copied, unquoted and unattributed, from a 2003 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proquest.com\/openview\/5673abad3db19db51c14f851f6b7fb2a\/1.pdf?pq-origsite=gscholar&#038;cbl=54013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paper<\/a> by John Smart. Below are pages 13 and 14 of Perry\u2019s paper, outlining its \u201cTheoretical Framework,\u201d with the italicized text coming directly from Smart:<\/p>\n<div class=\"image\"><\/div>\n<p>In a section titled \u201cPositioning Diversity Leadership in Higher Education,\u201d Perry copies almost every sentence from one of several other papers. In no case does she credit the actual source:<\/p>\n<div class=\"image\"><\/div>\n<p>Finally, in a section on organizational culture, Perry duplicates language from a variety of other authors:<\/p>\n<p>  Perry presented her paper as \u201cqualitative\u201d research because she chatted with what appear to be ten of her colleagues at the University of Virginia who sat on the\u00a0 faculty-retention taskforce\u00a0and counted their musing as \u201cdata.\u201d But when the paper gets to this section, where plagiarism wasn\u2019t possible, Perry includes the following jumbled passage that includes a glaring spelling error:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The positionality of the participants informed the perspective on the origins of the commission. \/in response to the needs of the varios [sic] stakeholders within the university, the commission addressed issues of diversity on the faculty, undergraduate, graduate, and university level.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The section of original text suggests that her plagiarism could be used to mask glaring academic deficiencies. Moreover, Perry in her references section fails to list some of the papers that she cites parenthetically in the body of the dissertation\u2014a telltale sign that she had simply copied those citations from somewhere else.\u00a0 A legitimate academic field never would have found this dissertation plausible.<\/p>\n<p>Perry and UCLA did not return requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Entrepreneur Mark Cuban recently argued that DEI policies don\u2019t necessarily lower an organization\u2019s expectations. But for Harvard, UVA, and UCLA Medical School\u2014where Perry earned her master\u2019s, Ph.D., and DEI position, respectively\u2014this is evidently not the case. These institutions have dramatically lowered expectations for favored groups and pushed a cohort of \u201cscholars\u201d through the system without enforcing basic standards of academic integrity.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Natalie Perry is to blame for her misconduct. But these institutions of higher learning share some fault for permitting such shoddiness to stand unchallenged.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/person\/christopher-f-rufo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>Christopher F.
