Tom Cole (R-OK) told host Margaret Brennan that he didn\u2019t think there would be enough Republicans to vote Johnson out of the Speakership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gotta take anything seriously,\u201d Cole said of the threats to oust Johnson \u2014 but he also said that he didn\u2019t believe they\u2019d be successful because not as many Republicans would oppose Johnson as had opposed McCarthy and some Democrats (like Khanna) were likely to vote to protect Johnson because they agreed with him on the Ukraine aid at least.<\/p>\n<p>He also argued that too many House members \u2014 from both parties \u2014 likely remembered how chaotic things had been when they did not have a Speaker at all. \u201cThey also had a taste of what it\u2019s like to go without a speaker for three weeks. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) addressed the issue on CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union,\u201d saying, \u201cThe House is a rough and rowdy place, but Mike Johnson is going to be just fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnlike Joe Biden\u2019s poor Uncle Bosie, I think Mike Johnson\u2019s going to avoid the cannibals in his own party,\u201d Republican commentator Ken Jennings agreed. \u201cHe stood up to them this weekend, and the adults retook control of the U.S. Congress \u2026 I think and I hope that Democrats will continue to stand with Mike Johnson for a functional Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, there\u2019s a wide middle in this country,\u201d Jennings continued, saying that Johnson\u2019s goal appeared to be to drag American politics \u201caway from the dysfunctional fringe\u201d and back into that middle space.<\/p>\n<p>Former White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield agreed, saying that Johnson \u201cshould absolutely get credit for taking a bold position here. He probably decided, you know what, this job isn\u2019t worth having if I\u2019m not doing something. Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, for example, kept hammering the same nail she\u2019s been working at since landing her MSNBC show \u2014 \u201cInside With Jen Psaki\u201d: former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of Psaki\u2019s show was an interview with Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) \u2014 who has often been floated as a likely replacement candidate in the event that President Joe Biden has to exit the 2024 race \u2014 and while they focused primarily on abortion, they did take time to discuss Trump\u2019s Manhattan hush-money trial.<\/p>\n<p>Psaki brought up the trial \u2014 along with reports that some people believe it actually helps Trump more than it hurts him \u2014 and asked Newsom how he would explain to voters why the trial matters.<\/p>\n<p>The California governor argued briefly that it should matter to everyone \u2014 but quickly pivoted to warn Psaki that he didn\u2019t think it helpful in the long run to give more attention to Trump. \u201cWhen we\u2019re focusing on him, I do worry, electorally, that he has a slight advantage.
