Liz Cheney expressed\u2062 her \u2063stance that the Supreme\u200b Court should\u2063 deny former President Donald Trump immunity from prosecution. She highlighted the negative implications of delaying Trump&#8217;s federal trial, emphasizing the importance of bringing \u2064him \u200dto account for his actions related \u200cto January 6. \u2062Cheney&#8217;s viewpoint was shared in a New York Times op-ed as the court prepared to debate\u2064 Trump&#8217;s immunity against \u2062special counsel\u200d Jack Smith&#8217;s 2020 election case.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Former Wyoming Republican Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/liz-cheney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Liz Cheney<\/a> said Monday the Supreme Court should find former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> has \u201cno immunity\u201d from prosecution and that any delay of his federal trial will have a \u201cprofoundly negative impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf delay prevents this Trump case from being tried this year, the public may never hear critical and historical evidence developed before the grand jury, and our system may never hold the man most responsible for Jan. 6 to account,\u201d Cheney, who is one of Trump\u2019s biggest critics on the Right, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/22\/opinion\/trump-immunity-supreme-court.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> in a <em>New York Times<\/em> op-ed.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Former congresswoman Liz Cheney appears onstage in conversation with David Rubenstein at the 92nd Street Y on Monday, June 26, 2023, in New York. (Photo by Andy Kropa\/Invision\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cheney\u2019s remarks come just days before the high court is slated to hear arguments on Thursday over whether Trump may enjoy immunity from prosecution against special counsel Jack Smith\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/donald-trump-indictment-judge-rejects-fani-willis-bid-to-try-all-rico-defendants-together\/\" title=\"Judge denies Fani Willis' request to try all RICO defendants jointly in Donald Trump indictment.\">2020 election subversion case<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Smith has repeatedly stressed there is a significant \u201cpublic interest\u201d in holding a trial over the four-count indictment before the November presidential election and has likewise urged haste when deciding the immunity dispute.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s lawyers recently conceded to the high court that if it does not grant him full immunity from Smith\u2019s case, then it should at least send the case back to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan to determine whether any partial theory of immunity would apply to his case, an outcome that would still push the trial many months.<\/p>\n<p>Legal experts said the case could become inundated with more delays if Trump gets the chance to question to what extent each of the four counts in the indictment rests on official acts of the then-president.<\/p>\n<p>Smith argues Trump\u2019s alleged involvement in a scheme to submit fake election certificates to Congress in hopes it would nullify Joe Biden\u2019s victory constituted a series of crimes.
