That reportedly leaves her campaign with $528,000 and $91,000 in debt, while her Democratic primary opponent, Wesley Bell, has more than $1.1 million cash on hand and zero debt. Bush has maintained her innocence during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2863956\/squad-democrat-cori-bush-struggles-distance-primary-challenger-doj-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DOJ\u2019s inquiry<\/a> into her.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Rep. (AP Photo\/Jacquelyn Martin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> reached out to Bush\u2019s office for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Recent Federal Election Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/forms\/C00638767\/1776460\/sb\/ALL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">filings<\/a> indicate Bush\u2019s campaign has paid her husband, Cortney Merritts, $15,000 this year, in addition to the $135,000 he has gotten since January 2022. In total,\u00a0Bush\u00a0has spent more than $750,000\u00a0of campaign funds toward security services.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice began investigating\u00a0Bush after she\u00a0stopped categorizing payments to Merritts as security but instead filed them as \u201cwage expenses.\u201d\u00a0Bush\u00a0claimed she hired Merritts because he was already volunteering in the position beforehand.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In early February, Bush was behind Bell, her main primary challenger, by 22 points in a <em>New York Post<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/02\/10\/news\/squad-member-cori-bush-losing-by-22-points-in-new-dem-primary-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>poll<\/a>.
