(Maansi Srivastava\/\/The New York Times via AP, Pool)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After 12 jurors and six alternates were sworn in Friday afternoon, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan said opening arguments in the first-ever criminal trial of a former U.S. president would begin Monday morning. The trial will be ongoing for weeks and is slated to take place each day except for Wednesdays.<\/p>\n<p>The jury selection process spanned the first week of the trial and took on the appearance of a focus group that gave hundreds of everyday New Yorkers the chance to give their opinions and viewpoints on the former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>president<\/a> in an effort to whittle down a fair and impartial jury.<\/p>\n<p>Potential jurors with the most opinions never had a real chance to become impaneled. Nearly half of the nearly 200 potential jurors called over the course of the week told Merchan they could not be fair and impartial by a show of hands, and the judge excused them from the jury pool.<\/p>\n<p>The final jury includes a variety of New Yorkers who said they could gauge the case impartially, including two jurors who are career attorneys, an uncommon circumstance that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/04\/18\/trump-trial-jury-lawyers-00152839\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"some legal experts\">some legal experts<\/a> say could work in Trump\u2019s favor if his defense team mounts a technical legal argument to try and win an acquittal.<\/p>\n<p>Scharf\u2019s prediction comes as Trump has decried the New York indictment, and three others he faces in separate cases, as a \u201cwitch hunt\u201d waged by his political rivals, who he says could not defeat him in the 2024 presidential election without relying on the courts.<\/p>\n<p>Trump took to social media on Saturday to deliver another scornful message against the case, calling it a \u201c\u2018RUSHED\u2019 TRIAL TAKING PLACE IN A 95% DEMOCRAT AREA\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In response to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/cnn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>CNN<\/a> legal analyst who compared the severity of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-big-problem-with-the-stormy-daniels-hush-money-case-against-trump\/\" title=\"The Big Problem With The Stormy Daniels Hush Money Case Against Trump\">hush money case<\/a> to a five on a scale of \u201cone to 10,\u201d Scharff said, \u201cI\u2019d rate this case a zero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that this case is seeing the inside of a courtroom at all is an absolute outrage and speaks to the politicization of our system of law enforcement in the courts, under the Biden administration and their political allies across the country,\u201d Scharff said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trump&#8217;s attorney, Will Scharf, expressed confidence in his client&#8217;s acquittal in the New York hush money trial with an impartial jury.
