Rep. Pramila Jayapal voiced \u2063remorse on The Weekend show for the Senate&#8217;s failure to impeach Donald Trump, enabling him to run for office against President Joe Biden. She stressed the significance of accountability and the Senate&#8217;s role in\u200d the \u2062impeachment proceedings.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_78\">\n<p>Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/pramila-jayapal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Pramila Jayapal<\/a> (D-WA) lamented the fact that the then Republican-controlled <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/senate-gop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Senate<\/a> did not impeach <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump <\/a>when it had the chance. <\/p>\n<p>Jayapal appeared on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/the-weekend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"The Weekend\">The Weekend<\/a><\/em>  on Saturday to express her regret that by not impeaching Trump, he is still able to run for office over three years later this November. He is currently up against incumbent President Joe Biden. <em>The Weekend<\/em> hosts had been discussing Trump\u2019s criminal trial when Jayapal brought up his near impeachment in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI go back to the responsibility of Congress here because had the Senate actually gone through with the impeachment of Donald Trump, we would not be in this situation. I remember <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Mitch-McConnell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Mitch McConnell<\/a> giving a speech that sounded like he was going to vote for convicting, but he didn\u2019t,\u201d Jayapal said. \u201cIt really, it is the thing that worries me, upsets me the most about the situation that we are in is we have to have accountability work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time, McConnell was the Senate Majority leader and had endorsed Trump ahead of his 2020 loss. Still, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/206614\/gop-condemns-rioters-as-congress-reconvenes-criminal-behavior-will-never-dominate-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"issued a speech\">issued a speech<\/a> that clarified, \u201ccriminal behavior will never dominate the United States Congress,\u201d\u00a0and went through with certifying the election for Biden. Later, McConnell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/1953073\/mcconnell-no-time-for-impeachment-trial-before-trump-term-ends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"issued a speech\">claimed<\/a> there wasn\u2019t enough time for an impeachment trial against Trump before his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-seeks-more-donations-by-offering-free-trip-to-his-1st-post-presidency-rally\/\" title=\"Trump Seeks More Donations by Offering Free Trip to His 1st Post-Presidency Rally\">presidential term ended<\/a>. While\u00a0Trump\u00a0has 88 felony\u00a0charges\u00a0against him filed by prosecutors across the nation, Trump\u2019s trial on 34 felony counts over allegations of paying hush money to multiple women in 2018 is the only criminal trial that has the potential to issue a verdict before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 elections<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Friday saw the final juror selected for this case. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
