Shapiro delved into Ukraine&#8217;s roots, discussing the\u2063 formation of Kyivan Rus in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-trumps-lawyers-offer-former-presidents-answer-to-impeachment-article-on-incitement-of-insurrection\/\" title=\"BREAKING: Trump\u2019s Lawyers Offer Former President\u2019s Answer To Impeachment Article On Incitement Of Insurrection\">9th century<\/a>, its subsequent\u200c fragmentation,\u200b and the region&#8217;s later history involving Poland, Lithuania, and the\u200b Mongol \u200cinvasion.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro broke down the complicated history of Ukraine in the latest \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/episode\/facts-the-real-history-of-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facts<\/a>\u201d episode, pointing out the flaws in Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s justification for invasion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shapiro began the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/episode\/facts-the-real-history-of-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">episode<\/a>, released Saturday, by talking about Putin\u2019s recent interview with Tucker Carlson, where Putin said that his reason for invading Ukraine was based on historical claims to the land. In the episode, Shapiro analyzes Putin\u2019s claims and lines them up to the historic record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPutin\u2019s claim is that Ukraine is inherently Russian territory,\u201d Shapiro said. \u201cThat\u2019s a claim that requires two pieces of support. First, the idea that Ukraine is historically Russian controlled and Russian populated. And second, that Ukraine today has no claim to its independence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shapiro explained how a state formed in the late 9th century known as Kyivan Rus which included some of today\u2019s Russia, today\u2019s Belarus, and part of today\u2019s Ukraine. This state lasted for about 300 years before it broke into a series of loose principalities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After the Mongols destroyed the region in 1349, Poland and Lithuania partitioned the territory now known as Ukraine and the Ukrainian language began to develop. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For the next several hundred years the area became entangled in a series of European and Russian conflicts with different parts of modern Ukraine being controlled by different powers. During this time a sense of Ukrainian nationalism began to develop, including in parts of Ukraine controlled by Russia.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After World War I, Ukraine was divided up between Russia and Poland, which was generally how things stood until the end of World War II when it became part of the Soviet Union. So as you can see, the history of the region is pretty complicated,\u201d Shapiro said. \u201cA lot of moving borders, a lot of territorial claims.
