Bush Presidential Center. \u201cIf we can get our own act together in this country, not just in terms of the economy, but in terms of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/can-biden-help-unite-america\/\" title=\"Can Biden Help Unite America?\">political system<\/a>, overcome some of our own dysfunction sometimes, there\u2019s every reason to think we have a better hand to play than the People\u2019s Republic of China does today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burns offered that remonstrance amid an acrimonious debate in Congress over supplemental defense funding for aid to Ukraine, a measure that hard-right House Republicans have stalled by threatening to oust Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) if he authorizes a vote on the bill. That dispute has unfolded even as a growing number of Republican lawmakers either resign or decline to seek reelection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUndoubtedly, the current dysfunction on Capitol Hill is distressing, but it almost always has been; we just didn\u2019t see most of it,\u201d\u00a0Rep.\u00a0Jake LaTurner (R-KS) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2970984\/laturner-22nd-house-gop-member-to-not-run\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> Thursday as he announced his decision not to run for office. \u201cI remain optimistic about the future of this country, not only because we have overcome more significant obstacles in the past, but that the vast majority of people I have served with are good and trying to do the right thing, and because our founders, divinely inspired, understood human nature and created this republic to endure.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) talks with Rep. (AP Photo\/Jacquelyn Martin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Burns cautioned against overstating China\u2019s advantages in comparison to the United States, despite the political tensions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Xi faces a lot of domestic challenges \u2014 an economic recovery, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-biden-attempts-to-quell-fears-over-inflation\/\" title=\"Joe Biden attempts to quell fears over inflation\">economic growth rate<\/a>, which is not moving nearly as fast as he had hoped after COVID,\u201d the CIA chief said. \u201cA lot of challenges inside his own country right now, too. We should approach this competition with a certain amount of confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, the stalemate over aid for Ukraine has been watched with dismay in Kyiv and NATO ally capitals across Europe, where current and former officials fear the consequences of the war and anticipate that their U.S. counterparts will be even more distracted by domestic politics as the election year wears on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all know that President [Joe] Biden will \u2026 focus entirely on the campaign trail [this fall] as, obviously, he must,\u201d former NATO strategist Stefanie Babst told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cSo how much political attention energy will there be? Not very much for other issues than the election campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some U.S. allies in Europe are doing what they can to reinforce Johnson\u2019s decision to hold a vote on the Ukraine aid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are counting on Congress to make the right decision and approve the assistance package to Ukraine that it so urgently needs,\u201d the speakers of parliament in the Baltic states \u2014 Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lrt.lt\/en\/news-in-english\/19\/2254917\/baltics-urge-us-house-to-pass-ukraine-aid-package\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"wrote\">wrote<\/a> in a Friday letter to their American counterpart. \u201cFor the sake of standing up to tyrants and aggressors and for the sake of our collective security. Supporting Ukraine is an investment in our collective secure future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In parallel, U.S. and European officials are increasingly frustrated by China\u2019s enabling of Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to Russia\u2019s defense industrial base, the primary contributor in this moment to that is China,\u201d Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in Italy after a meeting of foreign ministers from the G7, the world\u2019s seven largest industrialized democracies. \u201cNow, if China purports, on the one hand, to want good relations with Europe and other countries, it can\u2019t, on the other hand, be fueling what is the biggest threat to European security since the end of the Cold War.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Burns, for his part, suggested the U.S. \u201cnetwork of allies\u201d would provide the decisive difference in the competition with China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina and Russia are lonelier countries \u2014 now, they\u2019re working more closely together now than any time in my memory, and that\u2019s a significant challenge for us,\u201d Burns said. \u201cBut if we\u2019re not complacent about our network of allies and partners, not only in the Indo-Pacific but in Europe and other parts of the world, that\u2019s another huge asset that should enable us to compete very effectively with the People\u2019s Republic of China over the next couple of decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The CIA chief, Bill Burns, highlights how U.S. political dysfunction is hindering the country&#8217;s ability to leverage Chinese President Xi Jinping&#8217;s weaknesses.
