Furthermore, it stresses\u2062 the significance of reflecting on past mistakes to enhance future crisis management strategies.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Known for many memorable aphorisms, Winston Churchill once expressed a determination to \u201cNever let a good crisis go to waste.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the ensuing decades, some leaders have used such logic to justify taking advantage of people\u2019s fears during perilous times \u2014 trampling their liberties in ways the people would never tolerate during more normal circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The better application of Churchill\u2019s principle, however, is to actually learn the right lessons from crises we encounter \u2014 and to apply those lessons in ways that truly protect both lives and liberty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So it is with the COVID-19 pandemic that remains relatively fresh in our collective memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Anthony Fauci, the architect of much of the federal government\u2019s initial COVID-19 response, admitted late last year that many directives \u2014 such as 6-foot social distancing \u2014 \u201csort of just appeared\u201d without any serious science backing them up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So seems to be the case with many mandates and orders imposed in the individual states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here in Indiana, we<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  Hoosiers recently passed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the four-year anniversary of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  stay-at-home orders imposed by our governor with the support of appointed bureaucrats and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On March 6, 2020, Governor Eric Holcomb declared a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/martinez-we-have-2-4-hour-lines-due-to-new-mexico-lockdown\/\" title=\"Martinez: 'We Have 2-4 Hour Lines' Due to New Mexico Lockdown\">public health emergency<\/a>. Over the course of more than two years, various <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/why-rfk-jr-s-censorship-case-could-matter-more-for-free-speech-than-missouri-v-biden\/\" title=\"RFK Jr.'s censorship case may have a greater impact on free speech than Missouri v. Biden.\">government officials issued<\/a> and enforced COVID-19 mandates, including stay-at-home orders, capacity limits, vaccine mandates, mask requirements, and business, school, and church closures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unfortunately, few of the leaders responsible for these harsh measures have undertaken any serious effort in the aftermath of their actions to assess whether they responded appropriately to the threats we faced. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But we need such an evaluation in order to learn from mistakes \u2014 and to develop a plan and vision for how we will react to similar scenarios in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Toward accomplishing these ends \u2014 and because no one else stepped forward to adequately address these issues \u2014 I tasked my office with conducting an analysis of how our state government responded to the dangerous coronavirus spawned in China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In March, we <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/events.in.gov\/event\/attorney-general-todd-rokita-reveals-faulty-covid-19-data-in-shocking-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">released a full report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  on what we found. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One key example \u2014 death counts across Indiana were vastly inflated:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">COVID-19 was listed as a \u201ccause of death\u201d for numerous deaths caused by gunshot wounds, fires, car accidents, blunt force trauma, drowning and drug overdoses.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The obvious truth is that our state government produced and relied on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">severely flawed data, including inflated death counts and unsound positivity rates, to shape the state\u2019s failed response to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This faulty data led to months of mask mandates and, even worse, to lockdowns that devastated our economy and our children\u2019s education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The measures implemented to combat COVID-19 turned out to be even more destructive than the havoc wreaked by the public health crisis itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Indiana, literacy rates plummeted as chronic absenteeism skyrocketed. Thousands of Hoosier 3rd graders have been allowed to move forward despite being unable to read. Students\u2019 mental health also took a toll during the pandemic, with three out of every 10 Indiana students saying they considered suicide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shutting down society triggered an unprecedented level of federal spending. Total public debt as a percent of GDP skyrocketed to over 132% and remains historically high. Hoosiers and other Americans have suffered from the highest inflation rate in decades, and the consumer price index (CPI) remains elevated over pre-pandemic levels. Even after the pandemic, total federal government expenditures far exceed pre-pandemic levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Moving ahead, we must resolve never again to accept the false notion that we have to choose between our lives and our livelihoods. We must resolve, as well, to keep Indiana\u2019s economy and educational institutions fully open for business during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-picks-covid-19-vaccine-proponent-as-next-cdc-director\/\" title=\"Biden selects vaccine advocate as new CDC chief.\">future public health challenges<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some continue to insist that they have no regrets about the lockdowns and mandates that severely damaged our economy and our kids\u2019 educations. In fact, after our report was released, the governor lambasted it as having \u201czero\u201d credibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why not<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/attorneygeneral\/files\/Covid-Report_efile.pdf\">read the report<\/a> for yourself? Then, you can decide whether you believe it to be credible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Abraham Lincoln once said, \u201cLet the people know the truth, and the country is safe.\u201d Just as in his day, the need for transparency in government remains absolutely essential to maintaining a free society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let us all learn and remember the lessons from COVID-19 so that we can avoid past mistakes and better serve our fellow Hoosiers in the future.
