House passes bill barring abortions past 15 weeks\">deep-rooted belief<\/a> in elaborate \u2062schemes,\u200b highlighted by the pamphlets and \u2064manifesto he shared prior to\u200c the tragic incident.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Police identified Max Azzarello, a conspiracy theorist, as the man who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/politics\/2972386\/man-self-immolates-outside-courthouse-of-trump-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"set himself on fire\">set himself on fire<\/a> outside the courthouse where former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Donald Trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> was being tried in his hush money case.<\/p>\n<p>Azzarello resides in St. Augustine, Florida, and traveled to New York, without his family knowing, in the last week, police said in a press conference. Around 1:30 p.m. Friday, he walked to an area near where Trump supporters were protesting, threw pamphlets from his backpack, doused himself in an accelerant, and lit himself on fire.<\/p>\n<p>The fire burned for roughly two minutes before he was sprayed with fire extinguishers. He was taken away on a stretcher and rushed to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Azzarello was active on Instagram, posting a message saying \u201cI love you\u201d repeatedly shortly before he lit himself on fire. A survey of his account, with posts as early as 2013, shows a marked change in tone after the death of his mother in April 2022. He quickly shifted to posting about wide-ranging conspiracy theories, warning of a \u201cglobal fascist takeover\u201d and cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>Posts on Azzarello\u2019s Instagram showed he brought stacks of pamphlets on his New York City trip, titled \u201cNYU is a Mob Front,\u201d accusing the school of \u201cPolitical Revenge Killings,\u201d \u201cCriminal Propaganda,\u201d and other misdeeds.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> spoke with a Columbia student who met Azzarello earlier in the week when he traveled to New York University\u2019s campus. The student, who asked to remain anonymous, described Azzarello\u2019s disposition as \u201copen and friendly,\u201d adding that he \u201cclearly wanted people to engage with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The student was part of a small group that gathered around Azzarello, who was holding a sign saying, \u201cNYU is a Mob Front.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember the specifics of what he was saying \u2014 I was struggling to follow his theory \u2014 but he handed me two pamphlets, which he said could \u2018start a revolution\u2019 if people knew about the information contained. I also asked him what he thought of Columbia, which he said was also a mob front,\u201d the student said.<\/p>\n<p>The pamphlet was different than the manifesto distributed at the site where he lit himself on fire Friday. The manifesto, posted online and distributed at the scene, was titled, <em>The True History of the World (Haunted Carnival Edition)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden were both named just once in the manifesto, described as \u201ccharacters playing pretend, just like professional wrestlers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his recount of world history, beginning at World War II, Azzarello claimed the United States government and CIA orchestrated the counterculture movement of the 1960s-70s, the Manson Family murders, punk and metal music, daytime talk shows, reality TV, the dot-com bubble, the Great Recession, and most of all, the creation and prominence of cryptocurrency and nonfungible tokens.<\/p>\n<p>The stated goal of the manifesto and his actions was to \u201cAbolish our criminal government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cryptocurrency played a central role in his wide-ranging conspiracy theory, claiming it was an \u201ceconomic doomsday device\u201d intended to implement an \u201capocalyptic global fascist coup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a separate manifesto published to his Substack, Azzarello justified lighting himself on fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis extreme act of protest is to draw attention to an urgent and important discovery: We are victims of a totalitarian con, and our own government (along with many of their allies) is about to hit us with an apocalyptic fascist world coup,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Azzarello previously filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/dockets.justia.com\/docket\/new-york\/nysdce\/1:2023cv03197\/597363\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"lawsuit\">lawsuit<\/a> in April 2023, titled <em>Azzarello v. Bill, Hillary &#038; Chelsea Clinton Foundation et al<\/em>. In it, he sued dozens of people and organizations, including the Clintons, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, billionaire Mark Cuban, former Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon, entrepreneur Peter Thiel, and former cryptocurrency mogul Sam Bankman-Fried.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere on his Instagram account, Azzarello frequently referred to those in power and several popular artists as being in a \u201cdoomsday death cult.\u201d He also frequently denounced capitalism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Azzarello touched on some current events as well \u2014 last month, he said the Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse was \u201cdomestic terrorism in service of a military coup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Azzarello is currently being treated at a hospital and is in critical condition.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Max Azzarello, a conspiracy theorist, self-immolated outside the courthouse during former President Donald Trump&#8217;s hush money case trial.
