They highlight issues of accountability and financial burden placed on taxpayers due to student loan debt cancellation efforts.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>EXCLUSIVE \u2014<\/strong> A group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-education-and-the-workforce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>House Education and Workforce Committee<\/a> Republicans, led by Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC), raised concerns on Friday about whether the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Biden administration\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/student-loans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>student loan consolidation scheme<\/a> is illegal.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter obtained exclusively by the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, Foxx and 12 Republicans demanded answers from Education Secretary Miguel Cardona about the legality of consolidating Federal Family Education Loans into the Direct Loan program \u201cin order to further its \u2018free\u2019 college agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Biden administration has relentlessly pursued shifting the burden of repaying federal student<br \/>loans onto taxpayers with complete disregard to its legal authority,\u201d the letter said, adding that other matters, such as the bungled Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, rollout, have \u201cdemonstrated the Department\u2019s serious need for increased oversight and accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter comes as the Biden administration continues to find ways to \u201ccancel\u201d student loan debt, which critics say is forcing taxpayers to foot the bill for elite college degrees.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers raised questions about whether the Biden administration is allowing ineligible borrowers with FFEL loans to consolidate their debt using federal programs that are supposed to limit significantly the types of borrowers who can access them.<\/p>\n<p>FFEL loans are an old version of loans that are federally guaranteed, but sourced from private lenders. With the passage of Obamacare, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chelsea-clinton-appears-to-call-on-facebook-to-ban-tucker-carlson-post\/\" title=\"Chelsea Clinton Appears To Call On Facebook To Ban Tucker Carlson Post\">federal government decided<\/a> to phase out guaranteeing loans from private lenders in favor of the Direct Loan Program, which made the federal government the lender and guarantor. With the Biden administration\u2019s debt cancelation scheme, the concern among critics is that the administration is attempting to expand the definition of who is eligible for cancelation and allowing those who still hold FFEL loans to consolidate into Direct Loans outside the bounds permitted by law.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of Federal Student Aid is designated as a performance-based organization within the federal government, meaning it can receive more scrutiny of personnel and must meet higher operational standards than most government offices \u201cto increase the accountability of the officials responsible for administering the operational aspects of these programs,\u201d the letter stated.<\/p>\n<p>The FSA\u2019s status as a PBO, particularly in light of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2955414\/amid-fafsa-debacle-colleges-confused-about-bidens-gainful-employment-demands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>botched FAFSA rollout and other headaches<\/a>, was \u201coutrageous and a dereliction of duty\u201d that requires \u201cthe need for intense Congressional oversight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven FSA\u2019s abominable history of flouting the law and skirting consequences, we have no confidence in the Department\u2019s ability to follow the directives of Congress detailed in the [Higher Education Act],\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers are seeking internal federal communications related to loan consolidation concerns and guidance from the department to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-admin-signals-it-might-extend-freeze-on-student-loan-payments-again\/\" title=\"Biden Admin Signals It Might Extend Freeze On Student Loan Payments Again\">student loan servicers<\/a> to ensure FFEL consolidation is being done legally.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Foxx was joined by Reps.
