It took a veteran NPR editor with an ax to grind and some resurfaced tweets to drive home the point that the \u201cFresh Air\u201d of public radio stinks with leftist bias. <\/p>\n<p>So the question is: Why is the American taxpayer paying for this Pravda?  <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-228224277\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5654f67dc6a0533ae13a79fd99bdc368 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-5654f67dc6a0533ae13a79fd99bdc368\"><\/div>\n<p>Some lawmakers are saying enough is enough. <\/p>\n<p>U.S. Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., is introducing a bill to defund NPR. The bill\u2019s draft, exclusively provided to The Federalist, prohibits federal funds in general from going to the radio network. The bill specifically bars federal funds from being used for payment of dues to NPR and for \u201cthe acquisition of radio programs (including programs to be distributed or disseminated over the internet) by or for the use of radio broadcast station\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No grants. No loans. No cooperative agreements. No direct appropriations of federal funds. <\/p>\n<p>Done. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ecfb2ff89d8d919b19e5ee3f5f04057c fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ecfb2ff89d8d919b19e5ee3f5f04057c\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cToo many media outlets push their slanted agenda instead of reporting the news. National Public Radio has a track record of promoting an anti-American narrative on the taxpayer dime, while suppressing dissenting viewpoints,\u201d Good said in a statement to The Federalist. \u201cMy legislation would ensure no taxpayer dollars are used to fund the woke, leftist propaganda of National Public Radio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., is weighing a number of options to sever federal funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which doles out grants to NPR, Fox News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/gop-senator-eyes-legislation-defund-propagandist-npr-suspension-whistleblower\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> this week. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mainstream media has become obsessed with doing the Left\u2019s bidding and taking down strong conservatives \u2014 and NPR has led the pack,\u201d Blackburn said in a statement to Fox News Digital. \u201cIt makes no sense that the American people are forced to fund a propagandist left-wing outlet that refuses to represent the voices of half the country. NPR should not receive our tax dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leftists at the News Desk<\/h2>\n<p>NPR Senior Business Editor Uri Berliner, who was with the network for 25 years <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/04\/17\/1245283076\/npr-editor-uri-berliner-resigns-ceo-katherine-maher#:~:text=NPR%20senior%20business%20editor%20Uri,email%20to%20CEO%20Katherine%20Maher.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resigned this week<\/a> after he was suspended for a tell-all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/npr-editor-how-npr-lost-americas-trust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">essay<\/a> he wrote about the leftist hivemind of NPR. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4db57c7c63f114ba6ec8157801cee341 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4db57c7c63f114ba6ec8157801cee341\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAn open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don\u2019t have an audience that reflects America,\u201d Berliner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/npr-editor-how-npr-lost-americas-trust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> in The Free Press last week. \u201cThat wouldn\u2019t be a problem for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/employee-npr-tracks-race-sex-of-sources-and-lets-trans-activists-police-its-language\/\" title=\"Employee: NPR monitors the race and gender of sources, allowing transgender activists to oversee its language\">openly polemical news outlet serving<\/a> a niche audience. But for NPR, which purports to consider all things, it\u2019s devastating both for its journalism and its business model.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berliner was promptly suspended. So he quit. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s long been difficult to say with a straight face that National Public Radio is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-leftist-green-agenda-is-buying-its-way-into-the-news\/\" title=\"Green agenda is infiltrating news through financial means.\">objective news outlet<\/a>, although liberals have ever attempted to. But there\u2019s no hiding Katherine Maher. NPR\u2019s new CEO, who previously led Wikipedia, has said some of the more outlandishly leftist things in her activist past, and they\u2019re coming back to haunt her and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/supreme-court-npr-is-fake-news\/\" title=\"Supreme Court: NPR Is Fake News\">publicly funded radio network<\/a> she heads. <\/p>\n<p>Beyond calling former President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/13\/us-news\/nprs-new-ceo-katherine-mahers-woke-tweets-arise-as-editor-claims-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a racist<\/a> on Twitter, Maher defended looters in the Black Lives Matter riots of 2020. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, sure, looting is counterproductive. But it\u2019s hard to be mad about protests not prioritizing the private property of a system of oppression founded on treating people\u2019s ancestors as private property,\u201d Maher <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/krmaher\/status\/1266974026053767169\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> on her Twitter account at the time. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Also to be clear, I am not conflating provocateurs with protestors. Instead, saying this should not be the thing anyone sheds tears over. Cheesecakes are insured; the right to be black and breathe is without measure.),\u201d she added in the same thread in which she criticized the \u201clazy reporting\u201d of journalists covering \u201cextinguished shoe store fires\u201d in the riots.  <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"aec8z6TrhF3mDzV1vRW0x9LKtGkSd5LpEjNMSpHb3P9usl2K6wylUfUiuCsAoRAOfjoQwQXmBnHiha\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I mean, sure, looting is counterproductive. She said Wikipedia \u201ctook a very active approach to disinformation and misinformation\u201d during the 2020 election. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really set up in response to both the pandemic but also in response to the upcoming U.S. election and as a model for future elections outside the U.S. \u2026 sort of a clearinghouse of information,\u201d she said in a clip posted this week to X by journalist Christopher Rufo. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"Ga8iLglUTk1b7Phd5ZRsxSmo\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">EXCLUSIVE: Katherine Maher says that, as CEO of Wikipedia, she &#8220;took a very active approach to disinformation,&#8221; coordinated censorship &#8220;through conversations with government,&#8221; and suppressed content related to the pandemic and the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>NPR&#8217;s new censor-in-chief. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BoKZlrJuLE\">pic.twitter.com\/BoKZlrJuLE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Christopher F. Berliner wrote that the bias gauge exploded after Trump was elected in 2016. While NPR\u2019s public propaganda ministry piled on the bogus Trump-Russian collusion narrative, it kept a stern silence on the Hunter Biden laptop story in the weeks leading up to the 2020 election. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a leftist echo chamber, with no room for dissent because there are no dissenters. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cConcerned by the lack of viewpoint diversity, I looked at voter registration for our newsroom. In D.C., where NPR is headquartered and many of us live, I found 87 registered Democrats working in editorial positions and zero Republicans. None,\u201d Berliner wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Some of his colleagues have demanded NPR\u2019s leftist CEO take Berliner to task for questioning their journalistic \u201cintegrity.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re writing to urge stronger support for staff who have had their journalistic expertise called into question by one of their own in a public forum,\u201d states a letter signed by 50 NPR employees. New York Times reporter Ben Mullin <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BenMullin\/status\/1780635242170028359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posted the letter<\/a> to X. \u201cWe also urge more transparency regarding the consequences of making unauthorized public comments that seek to change NPR\u2019s editorial direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Out of Kilter with the Country\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>NPR defenders like to say the radio network receives minuscule federal funding \u2014 a mere 1 percent. They\u2019re lying. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNPR may receive little direct federal funding, but a good deal of its budget comprises federal funds that flow to it indirectly by federal law,\u201d Howard Husock of the American Enterprise Institute wrote a year ago in an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/op-eds\/the-truth-about-nprs-funding-and-its-possible-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> op-ed <\/a>for The Hill headlined, \u201cThe Truth About NPR\u2019s Funding \u2014 and its Possible Future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the House and Senate passed an appropriations bill providing $535 million for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for fiscal year 2026, continuing the two-year advance funding mark for public media. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate the House and Senate\u2019s affirmation of the great value delivered to the American people through our nation\u2019s public media. Our trusted, nonpartisan, educational and informational content, provided to all Americans for free and commercial free, helps inspire all citizens from our youngest to lifelong learners, and in the process, strengthens our civil society,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpb.org\/pressroom\/CPB-Statement-Congress-Passage-Funding-Public-Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> CPB President and CEO Patricia Harrison in a press release before the NPR stuff hit the fan. <\/p>\n<p>Now NPR\u2019s value as a \u201cnonpartisan\u201d content provider is under fire more than ever. But we\u2019ve been down this road before. In 2011, Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2011-mar-11-la-et-npr-funding-20110312-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moved to cut federal funds<\/a> from the CPB after a video showed an NPR fundraiser dissing Tea Party activists and the GOP. <em>They\u2019re killing Big Bird! <\/em>liberals and their pals in the accomplice media screamed. In fact, Sesame Street came to Capitol Hill for a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2011\/02\/pbs-stars-fight-for-funding-049651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Dem-orchestrated presser<\/a> to beg for more tax dollars. Taxpayers are still paying the tab today. <\/p>\n<p>But Rep. Glenn Grothman, R-Wis., a vocal proponent of defunding NPR, says the justification for cutting the cord is at an all-time high. He said it will come down to who blinks first in the appropriations battles, whether Democrats are willing to save public broadcasting funding at the expense of another priority. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a taxpayer-funded news source to be that out of kilter with the country as a whole is really just inexcusable,\u201d the congressman said. <\/p>\n<p>Berliner isn\u2019t among those calling for Congress to cut NPR\u2019s federal funding. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t support calls to defund NPR.
