In this 27-track album, Beyonc\u00e9 explores her Texas roots, delighting fans with blends of country, folk, Americana, and hip-hop styles.<\/p>\n<p>This cavalier approach to sound and style has performed well on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/chart-beat\/beyonce-tops-hot-100-country-producers-charts-cowboy-carter-1235652556\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Billboard charts<\/a>, with Beyonc\u00e9 topping 18 different lists, including Top Country Album and Hot Country Song. Yet the discussion surrounding the album has mainly centered on its genre. Is \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d \u2014 and Beyonc\u00e9, for that matter \u2014 considered country music?<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1794104881\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-85d94210866e32ed13e7ebd5c4c0f3e8 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-85d94210866e32ed13e7ebd5c4c0f3e8\"><\/div>\n<p>For that answer, we need to understand the context surrounding the album\u2019s release and examine the content within.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Born Out of an Experience\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s fifth studio album was first announced on a Verizon commercial aired during the 2024 Super Bowl. In an attempt to \u201cbreak the internet,\u201d Beyonc\u00e9 announced her new country album, complete with billboards of her wearing a cowboy hat and boots.<\/p>\n<p>The album\u2019s first single, \u201cTexas Hold \u2018Em,\u201d is a song meant for line dancing in sticky-floored bars. Complete with whistles, hand claps, and talks of tornadoes and liquor, this single immediately topped the country charts and paved the way for a true country album.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C4s6Zr7rlwA\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram post<\/a> announcing the larger work, Beyonc\u00e9 revealed the album\u2019s origin was from a poor and unwelcoming experience she had with country music and its fans.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-76b7660cbf998a2f1ef18b96eb6e1fed fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-76b7660cbf998a2f1ef18b96eb6e1fed\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed,\u201d Beyonc\u00e9 wrote. \u201cThe criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fans and critics speculate the unwelcoming experience refers to Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s performance at the Country Music Awards in 2016 with The Chicks. \u201cDaddy Lessons,\u201d found on her album \u201cLemonade,\u201d is considered Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s first country song. Her performance was met with lots of criticism on social media, specifically Twitter, where some country music fans spouted off opinions about why she didn\u2019t fit in with their ideals or their music.<\/p>\n<p>Due to Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s rocky history with country music, this work could be considered a revenge album, or proof that she can belong in any and all spheres as a true artist. Just as Taylor Swift has spoiled NFL broadcastings, so has Beyonc\u00e9 permeated into a genre no one expected.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Something Other than Country<\/h2>\n<p>Putting the history aside, \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d as a larger work did not meet the expectations of a country album. In fact, it strays far from the traditional and modern styles of country music \u2014 from Shania Twain to Morgan Wallen, this album simply seems mislabeled.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-cc489047d02de75a44759cd32122ecfe fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-cc489047d02de75a44759cd32122ecfe\"><\/div>\n<p>But the labeling of an album, and thus the restraining of an artist\u2019s musical freedom, was the exact idea Beyonc\u00e9 wanted to fight. This is stated quite clearly in the introduction to \u201cSpaghettii,\u201d a country-rap fusion song featuring Linda Martell and Shaboozy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenres are a funny little concept, aren\u2019t they?\u201d Linda Martell asks. \u201cIn theory, they have a simple definition that\u2019s easy to understand, but in practice, well, some may feel confined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The combatting of genres, as well as the lack of African-American representation in the country music sphere, is one of the main purposes of this album. And with that lens, this work does its duty remarkably well.<\/p>\n<p>Not only does \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d carry the weight of Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s name and influence, but it also features country legends such as Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, and Linda Martell. Boasting this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/will-hurd-launches-bid-for-2024-presidential-race-entering-packed-gop-field\/\" title=\"Will Hurd joins crowded GOP race for 2024 presidency.\">impressive lineup<\/a>, Beyonc\u00e9 was almost urging the audience, especially country music lovers, to say her album wasn\u2019t good or country enough. And while some country enthusiasts might have tuned in for the sake of pessimism about the state of country music today, these heavyweights gave most people pause before writing off the album as another work of pop music.<\/p>\n<p>Beyonc\u00e9 took her own influence, and that of the country powerhouses on the album, to highlight a group she believes to be underrepresented: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/country-star-morgan-wallen-performance-at-grand-ole-opry-sparks-outrage\/\" title=\"Country Star Morgan Wallen Performance at Grand Ole Opry Sparks Outrage\">black country artists<\/a>. On her rendition of the Beatles\u2019 \u201cBlackbird,\u201d \u200b\u200bBeyonc\u00e9 partnered with four other female black country artists: Tanner Addell, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy, and Reyna Roberts. She shared her platform with up-and-coming male country performers like Shaboozey and Willie Jones.<\/p>\n<p>According to Spotify, these artists\u2019 streams increased thousands of times over since \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d was released, with Kennedy\u2019s catalog streams rising over 40,000 percent.<\/p>\n<p>While featuring new country talent, this album still stayed true to Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s gospel and blues roots, with the majority of songs on \u201cCountry Carter\u201d applying country elements \u2014 banjos, vulnerable lyrics, and simple production \u2014 to the choir-like harmonies and strong, rhythmic beats. One of the reasons it\u2019s hard to label Beyonc\u00e9 or this album as country is because of its complex layering of styles and influences that go far beyond the sounds of mainstream country.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pushing the Boundaries of Popular Music<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cYA YA\u201d is one of the best examples of this inventive style of song. Sampling \u201cThese Boots Are Made for Walking\u201d by Nancy Sinatra and \u201cGood Vibrations\u201d by The Beach Boys in the same song is already a feat of its own, but the seamless combination of country, rock, and rap rhythms and styles created a listening experience unlike any other.<\/p>\n<p>The song opens with dialogue between Beyonc\u00e9 and her backup singers, reminiscent of the show \u201cAmerican Bandstand\u201d with its snapping and staticky sound. Yet as the song begins, the synthesized horns and strong drum line collide with the 1950s style with combative lyrics about the United States\u2019 history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhole lotta red in that white and blue, huh. History can\u2019t be erased,\u201d Beyonc\u00e9 sings.<\/p>\n<p>Using \u201cGood Vibrations\u201d by The Beach Boys as a transition into a breakdown, Beyonc\u00e9 then switches from American history to the suggestive, seductive lyrics that have defined her music for decades.<\/p>\n<p>The song plays with delicate harmonies and impressive vocal runs showcasing Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s talent. Ending with a strong electric guitar, \u201cYA YA\u201d immediately leads into a sampling of \u201cOh Louisiana\u201d by rock and roll pioneer Chuck Berry.<\/p>\n<p>This transition is a small snapshot of the intricacies and intentionality that went into every introduction, outro, and melding of sounds. This attention to detail has defined Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s previous albums and performances, usually in the form of lyricism and production, but was used on \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d to push the boundaries of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/coachella-and-stagecoach-music-festivals-canceled-for-third-time\/\" title=\"Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals canceled for third time\">popular music<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finding its roots in blues and hip-hop, \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d is not a country album, and the majority of its contents are not country songs. Adding a shaker or an acoustic guitar to hip-hop beats does not make something country. While there are moments or melodies that feel authentically country, they are immediately replaced by pop, R&#038;B, and gospel inspirations, leaving no song to fit perfectly into one genre \u2014 or one Billboard chart.<\/p>\n<p>So while the album, and most of its individual songs, cannot be labeled as country music, neither can they quite fit into pop or hip-hop spheres either. When describing this album, Beyonc\u00e9 said it best herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis ain\u2019t a Country album. This is a \u2018Beyonc\u00e9\u2019 album,\u201d she wrote on her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C4s6Zr7rlwA\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>Beyonc\u00e9 found the similarities in sounds among a collection of genres and created an album with a playful, inventive sound that stands out from the crowd. Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s work on \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d revealed her roots, influences, and inspirations in a way that inspired discussion and disagreement.
