As both candidates vie for voter support, the tariff debate intensifies, showcasing differing strategies on economic policies and trade relationships. President Joe Biden and presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump are \u200dcurrently competing in a tariff battle, a departure from their previous endorsement of free trade. Biden\u200d has suggested tripling \u2062import tariffs on\u200d Chinese steel\u2062 and aluminum to address unfair\u2064 trade\u2064 practices.\u2063 This competition highlights the candidates&#8217; distinct\u2062 approaches to economic policies and trade relations as they seek\u200c voter approval.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Joe Biden\">Joe Biden<\/a> and presumptive GOP nominee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Joe Biden\">Donald Trump<\/a> are now working to one-up each other with various tariff proposals, despite both political parties enthusiastically backing free trade just a few years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The latest came Wednesday, when Biden proposed tripling the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/un-ukraine-war-could-trigger-up-to-22-increase-in-cost-of-food-worldwide\/\" title=\"UN: Ukraine War Could Trigger Up to 22% Increase in Cost of Food Worldwide\">import tariff<\/a> on Chinese steel and aluminum, subject to an investigation by U.S. trade authorities, from 7.5% to 25%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Chinese steel companies produce a lot more steel than China needs, it ends up dumping the extra steel into the global markets at unfairly low prices,\u201d Biden told a group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/labor-unions-lash-out-over-job-killing-energy-policies\/\" title=\"Labor unions lash out over job killing energy policies\">union workers<\/a> in Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChinese steel companies don\u2019t need to worry about making a profit, because the Chinese government is subsidizing them so heavily,\u201d he added. \u201cThey\u2019re not competing, they\u2019re cheating. They\u2019re cheating. And we\u2019ve seen the damage here in America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the candidates virtually tied in the latest Pennsylvania <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/president\/general\/2024\/pennsylvania\/trump-vs-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"polling\">polling<\/a>, Biden may be hoping to neutralize any advantage Trump would have with voters concerned about protecting American manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>But Team Trump argues that Biden is leading from behind, first by keeping most of Trump\u2019s China tariffs in place, then by coming out against the sale of U.S. Steel to a Japanese firm three months <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/2930759\/biden-united-steelworkers-endorsement-against-us-steel-sale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"after\">after<\/a> Trump did, and now by proposing his own tariffs after Trump has been talking about the issue for years. <\/p>\n<p>If that argument sticks, Biden runs the risk of coming off as an imposter of sorts, and voters in key states like Pennsylvania may want to go for the original version. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a demographic that was taken by President Trump from the Democrats, and I think it\u2019s an effort by the Democrats in an election year to get that demographic back,\u201d Andrew Hale, a trade policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation, said. \u201cBiden is using a lot of the same language that President Trump has used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The states of Ohio and Pennsylvania lost more than 14,000 steelworkers after China began flooding the market, according to the president. <\/p>\n<p>But the Trump campaign was quick to call Biden out, saying he\u2019s either a hypocrite, a copycat, or both. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince taking office, Joe Biden has caved to China and left American workers behind,\u201d Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley said. \u201cNow, after four years of failure, he\u2019s finally following President Trump\u2019s lead on tariffs. Americans deserve leadership, not lip service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/stuartanderson\/2020\/08\/06\/biden-says-he-will-end-trumps-tariffs-on-chinese-made-goods\/?sh=48e93037523a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"said\">said<\/a> during his 2020 campaign that he would end Trump\u2019s China tariffs because they hurt consumers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thinks his tariffs are being paid by China,\u201d Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/06\/11\/politics\/joe-biden-iowa-remarks\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"told\">told<\/a> an audience in Iowa in 2019. \u201cAny beginning econ student at Iowa or Iowa State could tell you that the American people are paying his tariffs. The cashiers at Target see what\u2019s going on \u2014 they know more about economics than Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But now, with Trump and Biden both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2818570\/joe-biden-bidenomics-investment-wisconsin-minnesota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"fixated on Rust Belt\">fixated on Rust Belt<\/a> manufacturing workers in the swing states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, tariffs have gone bipartisan. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly, the neoliberal era is done,\u201d University of Massachusetts Amherst professor Gerald Friedman said. \u201cThe idea that the whole world would be tied together by trade, and the world would get along because they\u2019d be trading together \u2014 that is over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tariffs were infamously hiked via the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, which today is widely blamed for exacerbating the worst effects of the Great Depression. Yet Friedman says it was only in the Reagan era of the 1980s that a true free trade consensus emerged in the U.S., and he worries about the effects of rising trade tensions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFree trade is generally a good thing for everybody, and it\u2019s unfortunate if it goes away,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Biden still says his approach to trade is fairer and better than Trump\u2019s. He points to proposals Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2444531\/trumps-tariff-plan-former-president-floats-huge-new-tax-if-he-returns-to-white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"floated\">floated<\/a> for a 10% across-the-board tariff as damaging to consumers. An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/finance-and-economy\/2941790\/trumps-10-tariffs-1500-tax-hike-families\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"floated\">analysis<\/a> from a left-of-center think tank found that such a policy would be akin to a $1,500 annual tax increase for the typical household, a figure Biden cited in Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump simply doesn\u2019t get it,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Hale agrees that a broad tariff on enemies and allies alike would have negative effects akin to Smoot-Hawley, though he does not think the Trump administration would actually implement such a sweeping policy based on the ideas of its leading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/robert-lighthizer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"economic advisors\">economic advisers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Joe Biden and presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump are engaged in a tariff competition, diverging from their parties&#8217; previous support for free trade.
