The country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/luispetri\/status\/1780917494724636691?s=46&#038;t=RFIn7cv4CDYnUFuPU9wtaA\">Defense Minister, Luis Petri, announced the decision in a post on X, formerly Twitter.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Petri met with NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana in Brussels, Belgium, to present him a letter with the request. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met with @Mircea_Geoana, Deputy Secretary General of @NATO,\u201d Petri wrote in the post. \u201cI presented you with the letter of intent that expresses Argentina\u2019s request to become a global partner of this organization. We will continue working to recover ties that allow us to improve and train our [military] forces following NATO standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Argentina\u2019s request to join NATO as a global partner was celebrated by Geoan\u0103. He welcomed the decision in a statement published on NATO\u2019s website. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a great pleasure to welcome Defence Minister Petri to NATO Headquarters,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/news_224873.htm\">Geoan\u0103 said<\/a>. \u201cArgentina plays an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/psaki-biden-seeks-diplomacy-to-constrain-iran-nuclear-program\/\" title=\"Psaki: Biden seeks diplomacy to constrain Iran nuclear program\">important role<\/a> in Latin America, and I welcome today\u2019s request to explore becoming a NATO partner. Closer political and practical cooperation could benefit us both.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Petri was at NATO\u2019s headquarters to complete the purchase of 24 F-16 jets from Denmark, <a href=\"https:\/\/buenosairesherald.com\/world\/international-relations\/argentina-files-request-to-join-nato-as-a-global-partner\">according to reports<\/a>. It was a purchase considered vital to the objectives of recently elected Argentina President Javier Milei, who declared his intention to expand and modernize his country\u2019s military. <\/p>\n<p>Denmark sold the aircraft, which were manufactured in the United States, to Argentina for nearly $300 million. Moreover, the United States helped Argentina pay for the jets by giving the country \u201c$40 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/lawmakers-demand-full-funding-for-israeli-security-aid\/\" title=\"Lawmakers Demand Full Funding for Israeli Security Aid\">foreign military financing<\/a>,\u201d according to the <em>Associated Press<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>Petri praised the purchase of the jets as <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6968884\/argentina-nato-global-partner-request-milei\/\">\u201cthe most important military purchase since Argentina\u2019s return to democracy,\u201d<\/a> which happened in 1983.<\/p>\n<p>Countries considered \u201cglobal partners\u201d enjoy a cooperative relationship with NATO members involving intelligence sharing and joint military operations.
