Nebo Middle School, which is about an hour south of Salt Lake City, claiming that students who dress as \u201cfurries\u201d were being disruptive.<\/p>\n<p>Furries are people who have an interest in animals with human qualities, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sex\/what-is-furry-sex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to WebMD.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">What a time to be alive.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, over 70 students walked out of Mt. Nebo of biting, scratching, barking at, spraying air freshener on, and pouncing on other students.<\/p>\n<p>Some students who walked out complained that the furries wore masks every day, according to a video of the protest shared to social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey think they\u2019re so cool,\u201d one girl <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lifeisdriving\/status\/1780612860957360200?t=bUQt3iyNbuqAGJ8PGor2LQ&#038;s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t talk or say anything to the furries or even look at them, but they can come look at us and say stuff to us and touch us,\u201d said another girl.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"sk-tooltip-9096\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1700760801843000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2PQrVSrJfhxNb4LcARqniG\">CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>However, the school district\u2019s public information officer, Seth Sorensen, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/news\/education\/2024\/04\/17\/fact-check-nebo-school-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pushed<\/a> back on claims about students dressing up as animals. Students may wear headbands with ears, but they do not dress up in full-body animal costumes, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, we had some students and parents choose to exercise their right to assemble, and do a little protest for what they perceived was something that was happening in the school,\u201d Sorensen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc4.com\/news\/wasatch-front\/utah-student-furry-protest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> ABC4. \u201cIt actually is not something that\u2019s been occurring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInterestingly enough, they really didn\u2019t address us with anything they wanted changed,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want every student to feel safe when they come to school, and we want students to get along. In fact, we want adults to get along.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/news\/education\/2024\/04\/17\/fact-check-nebo-school-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added<\/a> that the protest may have been the result of a miscommunication via an email from the school about an altercation between two groups of students.<\/p>\n<p>The school also said it has worked with some students whose dress and appearance might be disruptive to the school environment.<\/p>\n<p>At Wednesday\u2019s protest, children held signs reading \u201cCompelled speech is not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/project-veritas-strips-cnn-naked\/\" title=\"Project Veritas Strips CNN Naked\">free speech<\/a>,\u201d as well as \u201cI will not comply,\u201d and \u201cWe just wanted to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/students-for-humans-at-school-not-animals-aka-furries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">petition<\/a> dubbed \u201cStudents for Humans at School, not animals aka furries\u201d has garnered nearly 1,700 signatures so far. The petition asks the school to enforce a dress code, which the petitioners say prohibits students from presenting themselves in a way that disrupts the learning atmosphere or creates a welfare issue.<\/p>\n<p>The online \u201cfurry\u201d fandom often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/desantis-law-forces-furry-convention-to-bar-children\">has<\/a> sexual overtones, although some self-identified \u201cfurries\u201d insist sex has nothing to do with their interest in the fandom.<\/p>\n<p>A 2011 <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130308185939\/https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/anthropomorphicresearch\/past-results\/international-online-furry-survey-2011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a> of \u201cfurries\u201d found that about a quarter of \u201cfurries\u201d said they felt less than 100% human.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A walkout occurred at a Utah middle school over the presence of &#8220;furries&#8221;, where students dressing as animals caused disruptions.
