Traditional studios are fading, with\u200d Netflix\u2063 moving away from auteur projects. Hollywood\u200b faces uncertainties, impacted by AI, crises like strikes, and changing audience tastes. Innovations and audience-centric approaches are crucial for the industry&#8217;s survival. Amidst challenges, adapting to\u2064 new trends and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/my-panda-my-choice-mom-disney-and-pixars-turning-red-has-some-parents-outraged-over-themes\/\" title=\"\u2018My Panda, My Choice, Mom\u2019: Disney And Pixar\u2019s \u2018Turning Red\u2019 Has Some Parents Outraged Over Themes\">embracing change<\/a> are paramount for Hollywood&#8217;s future.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The studio behind Oscar-winning movies like \u201cGreen Book,\u201d \u201cSpotlight\u201d and \u201cAn Inconvenient Truth\u201d has gone the way of the fax machine and pager.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Netflix is also getting out of the auteur business.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harper\u2019s Magazine declared it\u2019s not a matter of if, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/harpers.org\/archive\/2024\/05\/the-life-and-death-of-hollywood-daniel-bessner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">but when Hollywood ceases to exist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, at least in its current form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yes, Tinsel Town is in panic mode, and understandably so. And that doesn\u2019t include the fallout from last year\u2019s dueling strikes, the rise of AI and audiences rejecting some of the industry\u2019s once-bulletproof franchises (\u201cIndiana Jones,\u201d \u201cThe Matrix,\u201d \u201cThe Marvels\u201d)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let\u2019s start with Participant, formed in 2004 by progressive eBay co-founder Jeff Skoll to create socially aware films. That mandate seemed like a recipe for failure, but the studio walked the line between message and merriment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It earned plenty of critical love, too, but when a scare documentary on climate change grosses a gaudy $24 million stateside you\u2019re doing something right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Until now, apparently.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_725697\" style=\"width: 874px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-725697\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frazer Harrison\/Getty Images for Paramount Pictures<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Previous Participant projects like \u201cTruth,\u201d \u201cRGB,\u201d and \u201cWhen They See Us\u201d certainly had a liberal-leaning approach, and some genuinely impacted the culture. That Skoll opted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/16\/business\/media\/participant-jeff-skoll.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shutter the company<\/a> now says something.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Progressive stories will still be made, of course, but they lost a powerful ally in Participant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prestige filmmakers have struggled to get their visions made in the 21<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  century. Even a highly regarded filmmaker like John Sayles (\u201cMatewan,\u201d \u201cEight Men Out\u201d) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/global\/lone-star-john-sayles-trump-wall-urination-matthew-mcconaughey-1235923660\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">can no longer be guaranteed studio space<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  for future projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That allowed Netflix to gain a toehold in the cinematic space. The streaming giant gifted gargantuan budgets to filmmakers like Martin Scorsese (\u201cThe Irishman\u201d) to make their movies, their way while Hollywood studios flinched.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The studio previously produced movies with the Coen brothers, Scorsese, Jane Campion, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_725757\" style=\"width: 876px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-725757\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ROBYN BECK\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Netflix announced it will focus more on populist original films and skip the auteur-driven projects of yore. Moving forward, the platform will focus on films that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldofreel.com\/blog\/2024\/4\/15\/aurora\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">gain more eyeballs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, like the \u201cKnives Out\u201d franchise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That means celebrated filmmakers like David Lynch and Katherine Bigelow can\u2019t crack the Netflix code.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Apple paid handsomely to fund Ridley Scott\u2019s \u201cNapoleon\u201d epic. Will they follow suit? \u201cNapoleon\u201d earned just $217 million worldwide compared to its reported $200 million budget. (Studios split revenue with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/amc-stock-climbs-after-nyc-says-movie-theaters-can-reopen\/\" title=\"AMC Stock Climbs After NYC Says Movie Theaters Can Reopen\">movie theaters<\/a> and must fork over additional costs for marketing, etc.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The aforementioned Harper\u2019s Magazine piece is littered with doom and gloom, along with the receipts to back it up:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The industry as a whole is now facing a broad contraction. Between August 2022 and the end of last year, employment fell by 26\u00a0percent\u2014more than one job gone in every four. Layoffs hit Warner Bros.\u00a0Discovery, Netflix, Paramount Global, Roku, and others in 2022. In 2023, firings swept through the representation giants United Talent Agency and Creative Artists Agency; Netflix, Paramount Global, and Roku again; plus Hulu, NBCUniversal, and Lionsgate. In early 2024, it was announced that Amazon was cutting hundreds of jobs from its Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios divisions. In February, Paramount Global laid off roughly eight hundred people. It\u2019s unclear which streamers will survive. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hollywood is still deathly afraid of how AI technology will impact its workforce. We\u2019ve already seen stars lose out on voiceover work thanks to AI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That could be the tip of a digital iceberg the likes of which Hollywood has never seen before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Panic. And it\u2019s understandable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That explains reviving stone-cold dead franchises like \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/blair-witch-project-original-team-reacts-reboot-movie-1235874500\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Blair Witch Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/new-scary-movie-sequel-in-the-works-cinemacon-2024-8630189\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cScary Movie\u201d series<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. We\u2019ll also see another live-action \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/popeye-the-sailor-man-movie-live-action-development\/#:~:text=A%20new%20live%2Daction%20Popeye,Robin%20Williams%20version%20in%201980.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Popeye<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d film as well as a movie based on the board game \u201cMonopoly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Can Hollywood be saved? Perhaps, but it won\u2019t be by any of the above <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/will-smiths-movie-emancipation-leaves-georgia-over-voting-law-will-lose-15-million-in-tax-breaks\/\" title=\"Will Smith\u2019s Movie \u2018Emancipation\u2019 Leaves Georgia Over Voting Law, Will Lose  Million In Tax Breaks\">film projects<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It begins with innovation, acknowledging audience expectations, and producing less ideological content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The assembled stars should be less dismissive of their dwindling fan bases, too. Liberal actor Nick Offerman of \u201cParks and Recreation\u201d fame set that tone by telling the press his new movie \u201cCivil War\u201d would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/civil-war-president-not-donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lose audiences members if it chose a political side<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That\u2019s smart. What\u2019s less than smart?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Actor Alan Ritchson teeing off on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/erikkain\/2024\/04\/15\/reacher-star-alan-ritchson-faces-backlash-after-trump-comments\/?sh=49e04e1c50c3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">President Donald Trump<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bleedingcool.com\/tv\/reacher-alan-ritchson-calls-out-police-union-pushes-back-on-insults\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">police<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and Christians while \u201cpromoting\u201d his latest project, \u201cThe Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It might take real risk-taking, which is anathema to an industry known for playing it safe. Consider what Kevin Costner has in store for us later this year as the ultimate risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_725721\" style=\"width: 787px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-725721\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jerod Harris\/Getty Images for CinemaCon<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His \u201cHorizon\u201d film saga is an old-fashioned western, at least on paper, that could span as many as four feature films. The first two installments will be released on June 28 and August 16, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The film legend broke the old Hollywood saw about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/entertainment\/yellowstone-star-kevin-costner-gambles-next-monster-hit-with-his-own-money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">using your own money<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  to invest in the series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Will it pay off?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Costner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/entertainment\/kevin-costners-12-hour-horizon-binge-plan-pt-barnum-like-showmanship-big-winner-expert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">summed up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  the all-American saga during his appearance at this month\u2019s CinemaCon gathering:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When I think about the promise of America, there was a promise out here, if you could go. If you were tough enough, if you were mean enough, if you were resourceful enough, if you were lucky enough, you could take what you wanted in America.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The same could be true of Hollywood <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/no-spike-in-florida-coronavirus-cases-despite-no-mask-mandate\/\" title=\"No Spike in Florida Coronavirus Cases Despite No Mask Mandate\">moving forward<\/a>.
