Watson plans to safeguard\u200b local election integrity\u2063 in Mississippi, inspired \u200bby West Virginia&#8217;s approach.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<figure>                         <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson is exploring potential actions to fight back against President Joe Biden\u2019s \u201cunlawful\u201d federal election interference, The Federalist has learned. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with registering people to vote \u2026 but there\u2019s a legal way to do it,\u201d Watson told The Federalist.<\/p>\n<p>Signed by Biden in March 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/03\/07\/executive-order-on-promoting-access-to-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Executive Order 14019<\/a> directed\u00a0hundreds of federal agencies to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/23\/yes-biden-is-hiding-his-plan-to-rig-the-2022-midterm-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interfere<\/a> in state and local election administration by using U.S. taxpayer dollars to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-using-tax-dollars-to-boost-democrat-registration-and-turnout\/\" title=\"Biden Using Tax Dollars to Boost Democrat Registration and Turnout\">boost voter registration<\/a> and get-out-the-vote activities. Each department was directed\u00a0to draft \u201ca strategic plan\u201d explaining how it intended to fulfill Biden\u2019s edict, and to collaborate with so-called \u201cnonpartisan third-party organizations\u201d that have been \u201capproved\u201d by the administration to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-republicans-hold-the-power-to-stop-bidens-federal-election-rigging\/\" title=\"House Republicans Hold The Power To Stop Biden\u2019s Federal Election Rigging\">supply \u201cvoter registration services<\/a> on agency premises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ has regularly <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/12\/bombshell-doj-conceals-records-about-bidens-use-of-federal-agencies-to-influence-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stonewalled<\/a> requests for documents related to the order\u2019s implementation, even going as far as to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/21\/the-doj-is-hiding-information-about-bidens-attempts-to-interfere-in-u-s-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heavily redact<\/a> records ordered for release by a federal court.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sos.ms.gov\/press\/opinion-column-republic-if-you-can-keep-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">op-ed<\/a> published last week, Watson detailed a recent exchange he had with a White House official who, as the secretary described, admitted that the administration \u201cnever intended for [agencies\u2019 strategic plans] to be public.\u201d Watson was one of 15 secretaries of state to sign onto a <a href=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/attachments\/MSSOS\/2022\/08\/04\/file_attachments\/2237088\/SOSletterEO14019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> sent to Biden in August 2022 that urged the president to rescind Executive Order 14019. <\/p>\n<p>The admission from the White House \u201cis incredibly troublesome,\u201d Watson said. \u201cIt\u2019s weaponization of the federal government\u201d to interfere in state administration of elections. <\/p>\n<p>Watson said he asked that same White House official during the aforementioned phone call what right-leaning \u201cthird-party organizations\u201d the administration had reached out to regarding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/megadonors-pour-record-amount-of-money-into-get-out-the-vote-effort-for-dems\/\" title=\"Megadonors Pour Record Amount of Money Into \u2018Get Out the Vote\u2019 Effort for Dems\">voter registration efforts<\/a>. Conservative media outlets and good government groups have obtained communications revealing that many of the supposedly \u201cnonpartisan\u201d groups colluding with federal agencies on voter registration efforts are <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/08\/report-biden-is-coordinating-with-aclu-other-left-wing-groups-to-interfere-in-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extremely left-wing<\/a>, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/american-civil-liberties-union-aclu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ACLU<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/demos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Demos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe answer was, \u2018We\u2019re happy to work with anyone,&#8217;\u201d Watson claimed, noting that he thought: \u201c[sure,] of course you are, but you [just] aren\u2019t willing to.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s something the American people should be concerned with,\u201d Watson added. <\/p>\n<p>Given the unprecedented nature of Biden\u2019s directive, Watson is exploring several options to protect state and local election administration in Mississippi. <\/p>\n<p>The Republican secretary confirmed he plans to adopt an approach recently taken up by West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner. The Mountain State\u2019s leading election official <a href=\"https:\/\/sos.wv.gov\/news\/Pages\/04-10-24-A.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">revealed<\/a> last week that his office will not \u201caccept voter registration forms collected by Federal agents,\u201d citing Article 1 Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution, which <a href=\"https:\/\/constitution.congress.gov\/browse\/article-1\/section-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stipulates<\/a> that the \u201cTimes, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Watson added, however, that his office will \u201cgo the extra mile to follow up with those voters and help them register properly.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The secretary also revealed he is looking at potentially filing an amicus brief in support of a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/26\/pennsylvania-lawmakers-sue-biden-shapiro-for-unconstitutionally-changing-state-election-procedures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> challenging the legality of Executive Order 14019. The suit was filed by Pennsylvania Republican lawmakers against Biden and Democrat Gov. Josh Shapiro in January. While a federal judge dismissed the suit over lack of standing last month, plaintiffs recently <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/02\/pennsylvania-lawmakers-to-appeal-bidenbucks-lawsuit-to-u-s-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> The Federalist they plan to appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court. <\/p>\n<p>Watson further noted efforts by his office to uncover collaboration between the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Mississippi jails on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/arizona-election-worker-details-voter-fraud-investigation\/\" title=\"Arizona Election Worker Details Voter Fraud Investigation\">voter registration activities<\/a>. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/13\/doj-is-using-bidenbucks-to-encourage-illegals-and-felons-to-vote-says-mississippi-secretary-of-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland last month, Watson expressed concern that the DOJ\u2019s efforts to comply with Biden\u2019s order \u201chave led to agencies under [Garland\u2019s] charge attempting to register people to vote, including potentially ineligible felons and to coopt state and local officials into accomplishing this goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Watson, the U.S. Marshals Service \u2014 which falls under the DOJ \u2014 is altering existing agreements with jails to comply with Biden\u2019s directive, now requiring these facilities \u201cto provide voter registration materials and facilitate voting by mail.\u201d The secretary noted how this \u201ccreates numerous opportunities for ineligible prisoners to be registered to vote in Mississippi.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The DOJ has brushed off open records requests <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sos.ms.gov\/press\/opinion-column-republic-if-you-can-keep-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">submitted<\/a> by Watson regarding \u201cany communication between DOJ officials and any jail or detention facility in Mississippi,\u201d claiming these requests are \u201coverly broad.\u201d Watson told The Federalist his office is currently drafting letters to every federal office and prison operating in Mississippi to probe them about their compliance with Biden\u2019s executive order. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want people to register to vote, but obviously we want it to be done legally and under legal authority,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Shawn Fleetwood is a staff writer for The Federalist and a graduate of the University of Mary Washington.
