Efforts are underway to potentially increase the threshold required to remove the speaker, as\u2064 some hard-line Republicans aim to unseat him. Rep. \u200bMarjorie Taylor Greene has been leading the charge to oust Johnson.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republican\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Republican\">Republican<\/a> leaders could move to protect Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mike-johnson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Mike Johnson's\">Mike Johnson\u2019s<\/a> (R-LA) position from a rebellion in a rules vote.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson\u2019s position is facing its greatest threat yet as more hard-line Republicans move to unseat him for pushing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/senate-leaders-call-on-johnson-to-pass-their-foreign-aid-bill-after-iran-attack-on-israel\/\" title=\"Senate leaders urge Johnson to approve their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-aligned-group-comes-out-against-biden-106-billion-foreign-aid-bill\/\" title=\"Trump-aligned group opposes Biden's 6B foreign aid bill.\">foreign aid bill<\/a> following Iran&#8217;s assault on Israel&#8221;>pass foreign aid<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Ukraine\">Ukraine<\/a>, Israel, and Taiwan. House Republican leadership is exploring the addition of language in the debate for the foreign aid bill that would raise the threshold required to vacate the speakership.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, any Republican can trigger a vote to remove Johnson. With Republicans holding a tiny majority, only a few Republicans need to join the assured unanimous vote of Democrats to vacate the speakership.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson hasn\u2019t decided on whether to back the effort to increase the threshold needed for removal, though he\u2019s being pressured to do so by \u201cscores\u201d of lawmakers, <a href=\"https:\/\/punchbowl.news\/archive\/41824-punchbowl-news-am\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"according to\">according to<\/a> <em>Punchbowl News<\/em>. Though the move would possibly secure his position, it would undoubtedly be seen by Republican hard-liners as a betrayal and turn more House Republicans against him.<\/p>\n<p>So far, efforts to oust Johnson have been led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/president-biden-vows-to-defend-taiwan-from-china-says-i-guess-i-should-visit-southern-border\/\" title=\"President Biden Vows To Defend Taiwan From China, Says \u2018I Guess I Should\u2019 Visit Southern Border\">grown increasingly bold<\/a> in her attacks. However, Johnson has also grown bolder in his position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I operated out of fear over a motion to vacate, I would never be able to do my job,\u201d Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/daily-on-defense\/2970273\/after-exhausting-all-other-options-speaker-johnson-settles-on-doing-the-right-thing-for-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"said\">said<\/a> at a Capitol Hill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?535006-1\/speaker-mike-johnson-holds-news-conference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">news conference<\/a> on Wednesday. \u201cI could make a selfish decision and do something that\u2019s different, but I\u2019m doing here what I believe to be the right thing. \u2026 I\u2019m willing to take personal risk for that because we have to do the right thing and history will judge us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Johnson put forward his plan to pass foreign aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, as well as other defense measures, after months of gridlock. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2967831\/johnsons-foreign-aid-proposal-likely-dead-on-arrival-without-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The plan<\/a> is to combine all four bills into a single rules bill before bringing them to the floor for individual votes.
