Mark Warner (D-VA)\">Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA)<\/a>, the chairman of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligence.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Senate Intelligence Committee<\/a>, praised the law as a critical tool in identifying terrorism threats and emphasized any kind of lapse in the program could become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-warns-the-same-people-that-raided-israel-are-entering-us-suggests-attack-could-be-coming\/\" title=\"Trump suggests that individuals who raided Israel are now entering the US, warning of a potential attack.\">major national security problem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe notion that we would let \u2026 the crown jewel of our intelligence collection abilities to go dark as we simultaneously debate aid for Ukraine and Israel and humanitarian relief to the Palestinians in Gaza, to let it go dark at this moment in time would be the height of irresponsibility,\u201d Warner said during a speech on the Senate floor on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Privacy hawks on both sides of the aisle in the upper chamber have raised concerns regarding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2964090\/house-passes-fisa-renewal-capping-months-of-gop-infighting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>House-passed bill<\/a>, which ultimately did not include a warrant requirement for federal agencies to search U.S. citizens\u2019 data, which was a major point of contention. The demand for restrictions for federal searches became even more prominent last week when former President Donald Trump spoke out against reauthorizing the law, claiming it was misused to spy on his presidential campaign in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The House added a provision to cover new types of data service providers to keep up with advances in technology over the past 15 years, causing some critics to label the changes as a \u201cvast expansion of surveillance authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have access to any communications, the government can force you to help it spy,\u201d Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) said Tuesday. \u201cThat means anybody with access to a server, a wire, a cable box, a Wi-Fi router, a phone, or computer. This can all happen without any oversight whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) is also urging his colleagues to reconsider the House bill to include a warrant requirement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoliticians who love freedom don\u2019t authorize warrantless surveillance of American citizens,\u201d Lee <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BasedMikeLee\/status\/1779877082354368765\">wrote<\/a> in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<blockquote data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Politicians who love freedom don\u2019t authorize warrantless surveillance of American citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Fix FISA 702.<\/p>\n<p>Or shut it down.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GetAWarrant?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GetAWarrant<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2014 Mike Lee (@BasedMikeLee) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BasedMikeLee\/status\/1779877082354368765?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 15, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFISA 702 should not be reauthorized without a warrant requirement to protect Americans,\u201d Lee wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/san-francisco-will-not-rename-controversial-schools-school-board-promises-to-consult-historians\/\" title=\"San Francisco Will Not Rename \u2018Controversial\u2019 Schools, School Board Promises To \u2018Consult Historians\u2019\">separate social media post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration is attempting to push back on that criticism, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/embeds\/724064672\/content?start_page=1&#038;view_mode=scroll&#038;access_key=key-SaFxTiG4KGeT7oP5Cn4I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>sending a memo<\/a> to Senate offices arguing the bill \u201cdoes not expand the scope\u201d of who can be targeted and explaining the limitations in how the new program can be utilized, including in places such as restaurants, hotels, restaurants, and inside individuals\u2019 homes.<\/p>\n<p>Warner warned his Senate colleagues that a lapse in the program could cause unforeseen consequences, such as private companies refusing to work with the intelligence community and critical congressional committees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the event of a statutory lapse, some providers, American companies that are working with us, are likely to stop a reduced cooperation, perhaps with existing targets of collection, but especially with new ones,\u201d Warner said. \u201cWe know this can happen \u2014 because it\u2019s exactly what happened when a similar lapse occurred following the lapse of Section 702\u2019s predecessor statute, the Protect America Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) also tried to push back on criticism from some senators on both sides emphasizing those demanding a warrant requirement are misguided.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the House did was fix a dangerous loophole that would have allowed our foreign adversaries to escape the reach of our intelligence services,\u201d McConnell said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate is expected to take its first vote on the bill Thursday evening and will be required to make a deal on debate and amendments to avoid the lapse of the program\u2019s authority.<\/p>\n<p>However, some outspoken critics of the program said they\u2019re willing to let the program expire over the weekend if changes to the bill aren\u2019t considered on the Senate floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to debate \u2014 we\u2019ve had five years,\u201d Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) told reporters Tuesday. \u201cI would think we\u2019ve got time to debate whether or not it\u2019s appropriate for our government to spy on its own citizens without a warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul said he would agree to fast-track the process depending on how much debate is allowed on the floor, and denounced \u201cscaremongering\u201d to rush through the process. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not concerned with the date,\u201d Paul said. \u201cIf all else fails, I think we can live under the Constitution maybe for a day, maybe two days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sen.
