The bill, co-sponsored by \u200bJerry Nadler from the House \u2063Judiciary \u2064Committee, mandates court approval for such data purchases.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The House passed a bill from Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/warren-davidson\/\">Warren Davidson<\/a> (R-OH) on Wednesday that prohibits the federal government from purchasing U.S. citizens\u2019 data from third parties, a win for privacy hawks that brings an end to <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-republicans\/\">House Republicans<\/a>\u2019 uphill battle to renew the <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/FISA\/\">Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2960357\/davidson-fisa-provision-vote-congressman-speaker-broken-promises\/\">bill<\/a>, introduced by Davidson and <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/house-judiciary-committee\/\">House Judiciary Committee<\/a> ranking member Jerry Nadler (R-NY), would force federal agencies to obtain a court order to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-fisa-bill-tanked-by-hardliners-in-latest-blow-to-speaker-johnsons-leadership\/\" title=\"Conservatives derail House FISA bill, adding to challenges for Speaker Johnson\">purchase commercially owned data<\/a> of U.S. citizens, such as their online activity and location information. It was championed by Judiciary Committee members and their allies as an amendment to Section 702 of FISA, but it failed to make it into the final legislation that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2964090\/house-passes-fisa-renewal-capping-months-of-gop-infighting\/\">passed last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A vote on Davidson\u2019s amendment comes after months of infighting within the Republican Party over how to reform the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nine-takeaways-from-fbi-director-chris-wrays-testimony\/\" title=\"Key points from FBI Director Christopher Wray\u2019s House Judiciary Testimony\">key surveillance program<\/a>, with House Judiciary and House Intelligence Committees at the center of the arguments. <\/p>\n<p>After 19 Republicans helped Democrats sink a rule vote on FISA, GOP leaders had to create a new version of the bill text. A two-year sunset on FISA and a promise to vote on Davidson\u2019s bill were among the critical changes that lawmakers made to appease holdouts, allowing FISA legislation to pass, 273 to 147. <\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Davidson\u2019s bill passed 219 to 199, with 90 Republicans and 109 Democrats voting against it.<\/p>\n<p>The Ohio congressman spoke on the House floor on Wednesday ahead of the vote, urging colleagues to vote for the bill. He called attention to Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Andy Biggs (R-AZ) joining Reps.
