Cotton expressed concerns\u200b about Temu posing\u2063 risks similar to TikTok for Americans. \u2064The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exclusive-top-house-republican-calls-for-legal-action-from-states-over-bidens-border-wall-freeze\/\" title=\"EXCLUSIVE: Top House Republican Calls For Legal Action From States Over Biden\u2019s Border Wall Freeze\">senators allege<\/a> that these sites exploit U.S. trade \u2064laws, undercut American businesses, use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-k-experts-evidence-shows-chinas-genocide-against-uighurs\/\" title=\"U.K. Experts: Evidence shows China\u2019s genocide against Uighurs\">forced labor<\/a>, compromise data, and have \u200bstrong ties to the Chinese Communist \u200dParty.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Senators <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/marco-rubio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Marco Rubio<\/a> (R-FL) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/tom-cotton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Tom Cotton<\/a> (R-AR) have both written <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/temu_letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>letters<\/a> to the Biden administration, calling for an investigation into <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Chinese<\/a>-owned online retail sites Shein and Temu.<\/p>\n<p>Cotton argued that Temu, in particular, poses a similar risk to Americans as TikTok does.<\/p>\n<p>In their respective letters, the senators point to the two websites allegedly exploiting U.S. trade laws, undercutting American businesses, their alleged use of forced labor, compromising people\u2019s data, and their strong backing by the Chinese Communist Party.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Sen. (AP Photo\/Mariam Zuhaib)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Temu, founded in 2022, has become the most downloaded app in the United States in 2024, with 51 million monthly active users in January, according to Rubio. The retailer sells everything from clothes to wallets to gadgets at a fraction of American retailer prices. It has spent millions on advertisements, including ads in the Super Bowl. <\/p>\n<p>In his letter, Cotton alleges that the app is able to sell at such low prices due to government subsidies provided by the CCP and its utilization of forced labor from the Uyghur population, saying Temu \u201cdoes not expressly prohibit third-party sellers from selling products based on their origin in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region,\u201d or XUAR, the homeland of the Uyghurs.<\/p>\n<p>China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2586661\/newsom-defends-failure-to-address-human-rights-abuses-with-chinas-xi-jinping-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>has been criticized<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/backgrounder\/china-xinjiang-uyghurs-muslims-repression-genocide-human-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detaining<\/a> over 1 million Uyghurs, a Muslim and Turkic-speaking ethnic group, in the Xinjiang region, where they are reportedly in reeducation camps. China has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-rights\/china-rejects-genocide-charge-in-xinjiang-says-door-open-to-u-n-idUSKBN2AM1UX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">denied<\/a> the claims of genocide and poor conditions.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Sen. Rubio notes his discouragement in seeing that the Forced Labor Enforcement Task Force, led by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, has yet to add a single entity to its UFLPA exporter list.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrivate firms and journalists have unearthed compelling evidence that both Shein and Temu are facilitating the entry of goods made with Ugyhur forced labor,\u201d Rubio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/04.16.24-Rubio-Letter-to-DHS-re-Adding-Shein-and-Temu-to-the-UFLPA-Entity-List.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>wrote<\/a>. \u201cA November 2022 <em>Bloomberg<\/em> investigation found that Shein garments were made with cotton from XUAR. A separate digital vetting platform found that Temu has offered for sale in the United States various items that were made or sold by businesses located in XUAR.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Both senators claimed Temu was taking advantage of duty-free and tax-free importation because its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/north-carolina-lawmakers-unanimously-move-to-stop-chinese-entities-from-buying-up-farmland\/\" title=\"North Carolina Lawmakers Unanimously Move To Stop Chinese Entities From Buying Up Farmland\">items shipped<\/a> were under $800, with Temu accounting for 30% of all de minimis packages shipped to the United States. Such packages have \u201cincomplete and unverifiable information,\u201d according to Rubio, making it more difficult for Customs and Border Protection to \u201cidentify and interdict high-risk shipments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Temu and Shein have faced controversy before.
