The scheme shifts debt from privileged graduates to taxpayers and bypasses legislative checks on executive power. The promise of debt relief may sway \u2063young voters, but it raises concerns about constitutional overreach and moral\u200c hazards. Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth \u2063Warren\u200d recently unveiled \u200ba video geared towards young voters, where they proudly championed\u200c Senate Democrats&#8217; involvement in \u2062student debt cancellation. This strategy transfers the burden of debt from affluent graduates to taxpayers, \u200dsidestepping the usual checks on executive\u2062 authority. While the \u200cnotion \u200cof debt relief may attract younger voters, it \u2063also sparks worries \u2063about exceeding constitutional \u200dboundaries and ethical\u200b implications.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenSchumer\/status\/1778536823314317752\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released<\/a> a cringy video appeal to young voters this week, letting them know that Senate Democrats were integral in the White House\u2019s efforts to \u201ccancel student debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sure, they\u2019re bragging about saddling the average taxpayer with the debt of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/education\/the-student-loan-payment-pause-favors-the-wealthy-by-20-billion\/\">privileged<\/a> college graduates. But let\u2019s not overlook the fact that Warren and Schumer are also bragging about helping the president circumvent the institution they supposedly run. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-189720607\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-321ad3d6cdc5cf2ae7626a2ffdc04c4e fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-321ad3d6cdc5cf2ae7626a2ffdc04c4e\"><\/div>\n<p>It is no surprise the leader of what is allegedly the greatest deliberative lawmaking body in the world \u2014 tasked with checking the power of the executive branch \u2014 is telling us he will sell out the legislative branch for a few votes. A few years back, Schumer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/what-if-joe-biden-declared-climate-emergency-n1255676\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> Rachel Maddow it may be \u201ca good idea for President Biden to call a climate emergency,\u201d which would have given the White House nearly unfettered power to run the economy by fiat. If President Donald Trump or Ron DeSantis or Joe McRedState took the same power, Schumer would rend his garments.<\/p>\n<p>These are the same people, incidentally, who\u2019ve deputized themselves as democracy\u2019s great defenders. Thank you, heroes.<\/p>\n<p>For partisan Democrats who don\u2019t give a whit about constitutional order, the student loan racket has no real downside.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s promise to relieve borrowers of their responsibilities and life choices may well help him pick up a few younger voters. They tell me student loan \u201cforgiveness\u201d \u2014 a favorite euphemism of Democrats and thus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/04\/16\/biden-administration-releases-draft-text-of-student-loan-forgiveness.html\">the media<\/a> \u2014 is quite popular in polls. And why not? \u201cForgiveness\u201d is an optimistic word that makes it sound as if the loans are magically dissipating into the ether.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a8c30166f619a7b2b7bbc2184c910ef8 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a8c30166f619a7b2b7bbc2184c910ef8\"><\/div>\n<p>It should be obvious to anyone with a brain \u2014 even people with college degrees \u2014 that the president has neither the constitutional authority nor the real-world ability to \u201cforgive\u201d loans that have already been borrowed and spent. Biden can unilaterally break existing contracts and transfer the cost of those loans onto others, many of whom have either repaid their own student loans or never borrowed any money to begin with. <\/p>\n<p>I do wonder what opinion polls would look like if pollsters started asking voters whether they believe their children should be on the hook for a stranger\u2019s Ph.D. in journalism or gender studies. My guess is that we would see significantly different numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as for Republicans who attack the plan, Democrats will merely accuse them of hypocrisy and wanting to undermine the future. If there is anything conservatives hate more than children, it\u2019s children with an edumacation.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s only the start. \u201cRepublicans are suing to make sure that Americans have to pay more in student loans, to make sure that you have to pay more interest to banks on your student loans,\u201d was, for instance, the mind-blowingly dishonest way Maddow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/rachel-maddow-flames-gop-campaigning-004357460.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">framed<\/a> the case against Biden\u2019s power grab.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-fe111a9d9bf2e516982a2828b14c5f3a fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-fe111a9d9bf2e516982a2828b14c5f3a\"><\/div>\n<p>Which reminds me that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrats-push-for-student-debt-forgiveness-would-cost-taxpayers-millions\/\" title=\"Democrats push for student debt forgiveness, would cost taxpayers millions\">loan forgiveness<\/a> also poses a serious moral hazard. There are no limits to the types of degrees we will be \u201cforgiving.\u201d Take Maddow, who earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in public policy and a doctorate in political science. If anything, we should be paying Americans not to get useless degrees that turn them into insufferable authoritarian nuisances, not egging them on.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, the White House has been similarly dishonestly accusing Biden\u2019s student loan scheme of having benefited from the Paycheck Protection Program.<\/p>\n<p>This is bunk, of course. The state sent PPP checks so that <em>employment<\/em> wouldn\u2019t crater after <em>it<\/em> forced the economy to shut down. No one compelled you to borrow $200,000 for that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/with-garbage-lgbt-scholarship-colonial-williamsburg-destroys-its-reason-for-existing\/\" title=\"With Garbage LGBT \u2018Scholarship\u2019, Colonial Williamsburg Destroys Its Reason For Existing\">political science degree<\/a>. Unlike student loans, PPP was <em>intended<\/em> to be a cash transfer from the government. The loans were structured to be forgivable. No one broke a contract. No one in the White House changed the parameters of those contracts because would-be voters began whining.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the president didn\u2019t transfer the responsibility of PPP payments to other businesses by decree. The law was passed by Congress, not declared by some corrupt politician desperate to stay in office.<\/p>\n<p>Nor, it should be noted, is the student bailout anything like any corporate bailouts that were meant to save industries and jobs. They may have been wrong and counterproductive, but they were passed by the legislature.<\/p>\n<p>The White House is basically just shaming Republicans for trusting the government to help them. So, come to think of it, maybe they deserve it.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, if Biden fails and the Supreme Court (yet again) overturns another student loan \u201cforgiveness\u201d scam because it is a clear usurpation of the separation of power, Democrats will just turn their attention back to their favorite pastime of smearing and delegitimizing the court. <\/p>\n<p>For partisan\u00a0Democrats, it\u2019s a win, win, win.<\/p>\n<p>For the constitutional order, it\u2019s a disaster.
