Berliner&#8217;s criticism of NPR&#8217;s ideological diversity and emphasis on identity politics reveals challenges the organization faces amid declining audience trust and diversity concerns.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>It\u2019s no great tragedy that an editor at NPR was just suspended for <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/10\/employee-npr-tracks-race-sex-of-sources-and-lets-trans-activists-police-its-language\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">airing out his employer\u2019s dirty laundry<\/a>, but the episode is a helpful case study in how prejudiced, corrupt, and degenerate our corporate news media remain.<\/p>\n<p>NPR Media Correspondent  David Folkenflik <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/04\/16\/1244962042\/npr-editor-uri-berliner-suspended-essay\">announced<\/a> Tuesday that Uri Berliner, a longtime business editor at the network, was suspended for five days without pay following his tour de force last week, during which Berliner extensively detailed the detrimental lack of ideological diversity at NPR.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-163418247\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ef342d4311c37dbf637280ccad3e9158 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-ef342d4311c37dbf637280ccad3e9158\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWith <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/poll-republicans-face-uphill-battle-to-unseat-michigan-democrat-gov-gretchen-whitmer\/\" title=\"Poll: Republicans Face Uphill Battle to Unseat Michigan Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer\">declining ratings<\/a>, sorry levels of trust, and an audience that has become less diverse over time, the trajectory for NPR is not promising,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/npr-editor-how-npr-lost-americas-trust?utm_source=tfptwitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Berliner wrote<\/a> for The Free Press in his media kickoff. \u201cTwo paths seem clear. We can keep doing what we\u2019re doing, hoping it will all work out. Or we could start over, with the basic building blocks of journalism. We could face up to where we\u2019ve gone wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said there was an \u201cunspoken consensus\u201d at NPR, which is now little more than a conglomerate of social justice interest groups, that dictated the network\u2019s news coverage. \u201cIt\u2019s frictionless,\u201d he said, \u201cone story after another about instances of supposed racism, transphobia, signs of the climate apocalypse, Israel doing something bad, and the dire threat of Republican policies. It\u2019s almost like an assembly line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The innocuous and plain observation was that NPR has diminished its reputation and thereby its audience with its obsessive preoccupation with skin color and sexual identity, as well as its undeniable editorial judgment framing Donald Trump and anyone who would consider voting for him as an irredeemably despicable person.<\/p>\n<p>Berliner cited NPR\u2019s dwindling audience share, with an emphasis on the consistently low listenership among blacks and Latinos, despite all of the company\u2019s devotion to \u201cdiversity.\u201d And he wrote that past personal overtures to executives expressing his concerns were left unanswered. Subsequent reports indicated a lack of enthusiasm among Berliner\u2019s colleagues for his public criticism, and he was ultimately reprimanded for, according to Folkenflik, having \u201cfailed to secure [NPR\u2019s] approval for outside work for other news outlets.\u201d (In other words, they were claiming to punish him not for insubordination but for contributing to another publication.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-33827148544fb79f5bc406ddf256e556 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-33827148544fb79f5bc406ddf256e556\"><\/div>\n<p>There\u2019s a curious neurosis among many people in this field of work that has them under the misguided belief that there\u2019s something virtuous and noble in publicly trashing your bosses and coworkers, so as to earn favor with competitors who are considered for some reason to be superior. It was certainly a ballsy thing for Berliner to openly second-guess his bosses and colleagues, who surely deserve that and more (like Chinese water torture). Under normal circumstances, he would just as surely deserve the consequence for doing it.<\/p>\n<p>But like the rest of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dems-lost-all-credibility-on-social-distancing-after-biden-celebrations\/\" title=\"Dems Lost All Credibility On Social Distancing After Biden Celebrations\">corporate media<\/a>, NPR is not a normal place. It\u2019s a depraved place where sex and race determine a person\u2019s worth. And unfortunately for Berliner, he is not only a straight, white male (bottom of the food chain at NPR), he is also manifestly disinterested in sex and race, placing him at sewage-level valuation among NPR executives. (Read more on this phenomenon in my 2020 book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Privileged-Victims-Americas-Fascists-Hijacked\/dp\/1642931454\">Privileged Victims: How America\u2019s Culture Fascists Hijacked the Country and Elevated Its Worst People<\/a><\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>As Berliner wrote in his piece for The Free Press, then-CEO of NPR John Lansing declared to the company in 2020, the year of our George Floyd, that \u201cdiversity\u201d would be the network\u2019s \u201cNorth Star.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRace and identity became paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace,\u201d wrote Berliner. \u201cJournalists were required to ask everyone we interviewed their race, gender, and ethnicity (among other questions), and had to enter it in a centralized tracking system. We were given <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/woke-britain-police-forces-house-of-lords-told-to-use-gender-neutral-language\/\" title=\"Woke Britain: Police Forces, House of Lords Told to Use 'Gender-Neutral' Language\">unconscious bias training sessions<\/a>. A growing DEI [diversity, equity, and inclusion] staff offered regular meetings imploring us to \u2018start talking about race.\u2019 Monthly dialogues were offered for \u2018women of color\u2019 and \u2018men of color.\u2019 Nonbinary people of color were included, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-95581cd688ab8b1ae12e751a4a26036d fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-95581cd688ab8b1ae12e751a4a26036d\"><\/div>\n<p>In essence, Berliner was no longer interested in NPR\u2019s \u201cNorth Star,\u201d so NPR is no longer interested in Berliner. By contrast, imagine a separate employee at the network who instead publicly complained that her employers still weren\u2019t doing <em>enough<\/em> in the name of \u201cdiversity.\u201d Who would anticipate her suspension without pay? On the contrary, she would predictably receive a promotion and public letters of remorse, plus promises to \u201cdo better\u201d from her employers.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the way DEI and \u201csocial justice\u201d work.
