Cassidy\u2019s Vote in Impeachment Trial\">mounting opposition<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mike-johnson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Mike Johnson<\/a> (R-LA) hoped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump<\/a> could head off a brewing effort to remove him as House speaker. <\/p>\n<p>But he is learning the limits of the former president\u2019s power in an unruly and divided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>House<\/a> where even a single Republican defection could prove fatal to his early speakership.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who is weighing a motion to oust Johnson, appeared unfazed by his pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago on Friday, where Trump gave the speaker his vote of confidence and called the move a distraction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, it\u2019s unfortunate that people bring it up because we have much bigger problems,\u201d Trump said. <\/p>\n<p>The visit reflected Trump\u2019s newfound sway in the party since clinching the delegates needed to become the Republican nominee for president. But Greene\u2019s reaction only served to illustrate how deep-seated her frustrations with Johnson had become.<\/p>\n<p>She <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mkraju\/status\/1779990583299211724\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told<\/a> reporters the show of support did not change her stance, chalking Trump\u2019s words up to a disagreement among allies. She has so far not forced a motion to vacate but could do so at any time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI support a lot of people I don\u2019t agree with,\u201d she said. \u201cAll the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greene is not alone. Her threat became more real on Tuesday when Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) became the first lawmaker to announce he would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2967387\/mtg-gets-support-massie-oust-mike-johnson-house-speaker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>co-sponsor her bill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He called for Johnson\u2019s resignation at a meeting of House Republicans, prompting a sharp rebuke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not resigning,\u201d Johnson said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gov-whitmer-media-caught-in-another-lie-anarchist-arrested-for-plot-to-kidnap-and-kill-whitmer-hates-president-trump-trump-is-a-tyrant-video\/\" title=\"Gov. Whitmer, Media Caught in Another Lie - Anarchist Arrested For Plot to Kidnap and Kill Whitmer Hates President Trump, 'Trump is a Tyrant' (VIDEO)\">press conference<\/a>, \u201cand it is, in my view, an absurd notion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not helpful to the cause; it is not helpful to the country. It does not help the House Republicans advance our agenda,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson faces the same headache as his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy, who lasted nine months on the job before eight hard-liners joined with Democrats to depose him in October.<\/p>\n<p>House Republicans, by and large, have no appetite to relive the three weeks of chaos that ensued as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-challenges-matt-gaetz-faces-after-leading-house-into-uncertainty\/\" title=\"Matt Gaetz's uphill battle post-leading House into uncertainty\">conference struggled<\/a> to elect a new speaker, especially so close to the November election.<\/p>\n<p>But their vanishingly small, soon-to-be one-seat majority has meant that any two lawmakers can in theory oust him.<\/p>\n<p>Greene has called the deal Johnson cut on 2024 spending a betrayal, while Massie joins her in opposing his compromises on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and Ukraine aid. But establishment-minded Republicans regard the pair as legislative arsonists who would be unhappy with any deal Johnson cuts.<\/p>\n<p>The speaker often notes he must settle for legislation that conservatives won\u2019t entirely like because of Democrats\u2019 control of the White House and Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), a close ally of Trump, believes there was utility in Johnson\u2019s trip to Mar-a-Lago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think, look, if Trump hadn\u2019t stood up there with Johnson, Johnson would be toast. It certainly gave him a little cover,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But Vance said there are limits to what Trump can do in a chamber Johnson controls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll see what happens with that,\u201d the former president, speaking at a bodega in New York City, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/acyn\/status\/1780371217599418764?s=51&#038;t=oYTIYwEqmPpaQCOEPM8xZA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> of Johnson on Tuesday before calling him a \u201cgreat person.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump speaks as Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) listens during a news conference, Friday, April 12, 2024, at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. He <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/4420454-massie-says-hes-not-afraid-of-backlash-for-supporting-desantis-ive-got-the-trump-antibodies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>unapologetically<\/a> backed Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) in the Republican primary for president last year.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson is on more secure footing than McCarthy. At least two Democrats have offered to protect him from a motion to vacate, assuming he puts the defense bill aiding Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan on the House floor.<\/p>\n<p>The money is a top priority of President Joe Biden as he navigates wars in Gaza and Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a reasonable number of Democrats who would not want to see the speaker fall as a result of doing the right thing,\u201d House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said at a Monday press conference.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Johnson has not faced the level of GOP anger that endangered McCarthy. Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ), one of the eight Republicans to boot him, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mkraju\/status\/1780228828649931062\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told<\/a> CNN, \u201cThe timing would be pretty bad to have a change in command.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greene, for her part, has suggested that more lawmakers will join her side if the House passes the Ukraine bill, a lightning rod among House Republicans who want to see the conflict with Russia come to an end.<\/p>\n<p>Massie went so far as to suggest Trump would change his mind on Johnson, who is not completely aligned with the former president on policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he\u2019ll come around,\u201d Massie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-backs-republican-covid-19-package-after-mcconnell-rejects-bipartisan-proposal\/\" title=\"Trump backs Republican COVID-19 package after McConnell rejects bipartisan proposal\">told reporters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has exerted his influence over Congress in other ways. Johnson has made a point to brief him on legislation, sometimes tailoring its language to get his buy-in.<\/p>\n<p>That includes packaging the Ukraine money as a loan. We need to make sure that he\u2019s part of some of the decisions moving forward,\u201d said Sen.
