DoubleVerify, evaluating\u200c platforms like X based on handling sensitive\u2063 content, disclosed an \u200berror in rating Elon Musk\u2019s platform. The misrepresentation led to severe business consequences, with various companies halting their ads \u2063based\u2062 on inaccurate data.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p>Dozens of major brands said they could not advertise on X because of a poor rating from a third-party \u201cbrand safety\u201d firm that now admits it made a mistake, the social media platform says.<\/p>\n<p>DoubleVerify, a firm that rates digital platforms such as X based on how they handle questionable content like racism or \u201cmisinformation,\u201d acknowledged it made a mistake with its rating of billionaire Elon Musk\u2019s social media platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoubleVerify recently discovered a graphical error in the display of X\u2019s Brand Safety Rate in DV\u2019s Pinnacle dashboard that resulted in displaying an incorrect, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/covid-19-vaccination-rates-how-does-your-state-compare\/\" title=\"COVID-19 Vaccination Rates: How Does Your State Compare?\">lower rate<\/a>,\u201d CEO Mark Zegorski <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/digital\/news\/x-twitter-brand-saftey-rate-doubleverify-apology-1235971603\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cThis display error occurred over four and a half months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on DoubleVerify\u2019s metrics, X\u2019s Brand Safety Rate across all campaigns we measured exceeded 99.99%,\u201d he wrote. \u201cWe take full responsibility\u201d and \u201capologize for any conclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joe Benarroch, X\u2019s head of business operations, told The Daily Wire that the misrepresentation \u201chas caused incalculable damage to our business.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span><\/p>\n<p>He says companies including Campbell\u2019s and ConAgra were hesitant to advertise on X after the DoubleVerify dashboard displayed a poor rating for a Molson Coors X campaign. The three companies all use the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/companies-that-donated-to-gov-gavin-newsom-to-help-with-coronavirus-were-rewarded-with-no-bid-state-contracts\/\" title=\"Companies That Donated To Gov. Gavin Newsom To Help With Coronavirus Were Rewarded With No-Bid State Contracts\">advertising firm<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicisgroupe.com\/en\/news\/press-releases\/publicis-media-launches-once-and-for-all-coalition-to-build-more-equitable-ad-ecosystem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Publicis Spark<\/a>, which says it wants to \u201cbuild [a] more equitable ad ecosystem.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Campbell\u2019s spokesman James F. Regan denied that story, saying the brands have not advertised on X since 2020 and \u201cthe decision was tied to consumer behavior and performance.\u201d ConAgra and Molson Coors did not return requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Benarroch said that there were \u201cdozens\u201d of companies \u201cwho used [DoubleVerify] to justify stopping advertising.\u201d He said that advertisers did business with X freely when it was known as Twitter and run by a politically liberal CEO, but cited \u201cbrand safety\u201d to stop advertising since the acquisition by Elon Musk, even though \u201cprior to acquisition, there was little to no brand safety capabilities,\u201d and \u201c90% of all brand safety capabilities and partnerships were put in place post-acquisition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DoubleVerify is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bill-gates-sought-numerous-inappropriate-relationships-with-employees-report\/\" title=\"Bill Gates Sought Numerous \u2018Inappropriate\u2019 Relationships With Employees: Report\">publicly traded company<\/a> that pulls in massive sums, reporting <a href=\"https:\/\/d1io3yog0oux5.cloudfront.net\/_b14b6f43ac9e1e57c442f6bd5b46468b\/doubleverify\/news\/2024-02-28_DoubleVerify_Reports_Fourth_Quarter_and_Full_Year__281.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">half a billion dollars<\/a> in revenue in 2023. The demand for its services was partly created by the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM), which says that no company should advertise on news sources that promote \u201cmisinformation.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>To determine which outlets are unacceptable, advertisers defer to third<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/inside-the-privacy-battle-raging-between-apple-and-facebook\/\" title=\"Inside The Privacy Battle Raging Between Apple And Facebook\">-party firms<\/a>. Critics say those firms act as partisan activist groups that gin up business with the implied threat that companies could face boycotts from the Left if they advertise on channels such as Fox News. The firms have rated mainstream, center-right news outlets like Reason Magazine and the New York Post as unsuitable to advertise on, and advocates have spoken of the ratings systems as a way to bankrupt disfavored news organizations.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, DoubleVerify <a href=\"https:\/\/doubleverify.com\/newsroom\/doubleverify-announces-next-evolution-of-brand-safety-suitability-brand-suitability-tiers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> it was \u201cthe first verification company to align product functionality with the Brand Safety Floor and Brand Suitability Framework advanced by the 4A\u2019s Advertising Protection Bureau (APB)\u00a0and World Federation of Advertisers (WFA)\u00a0Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM).\u00a0\u201c<\/p>\n<p>DoubleVerify openly displays its political sensibilities. The company says it is <a href=\"https:\/\/doubleverify.com\/deib\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">focused<\/a> on \u201cBreaking the Bias in Ad Tech\u201d and \u201cBringing Pronouns to the Workplace,\u201d and hosted a \u201cSocial Justice Hackathon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DoubleVerify did not immediately return a request for comment on how its error affected only X, and why users should trust a \u201cmisinformation\u201d rating system that pushed misinformation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The House Judiciary Committee is investigating whether GARM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/congress-calls-in-head-of-advertisers-alleged-censorship-operation-using-antitrust-laws-to-target-woke-collusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violated anti-trust laws<\/a>, and said it has seen evidence that, though the group purported to be focused on \u201csafety\u201d and \u201cmisinformation,\u201d it actually targeted news outlets based on their politics, including The Daily Wire, Fox News, and Breitbart.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>It has demanded evidence from companies that compose the GARM \u201csteering committee,\u201d \u00a0Unilever, Procter &#038; Gamble, GroupM, Diageo, and Mars.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Numerous top brands pulled ads from X due to a third-party &#8216;brand safety&#8217; firm&#8217;s misjudgment, which has since been acknowledged as an error.
