This move follows revelations about communication with EcoHealth Alliance using personal email. The investigation began\u2062 in June last year and Morens is\u2064 now requested to provide unredacted communications with key NIH figures like Fauci.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>EXCLUSIVE \u2014 <\/strong>House Republicans sent a subpoena order Tuesday to the former top aide of Anthony Fauci, former director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nih\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases\">National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases<\/a>, regarding his use of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/judge-orders-peter-navarro-to-turn-over-private-emails-that-discussed-white-house-work\/\" title=\"Judge Orders Peter Navarro to Turn Over Private Emails That Discussed White House Work\">private email address<\/a> to conduct government business regarding the origins of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"COVID-19\">COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to subpoena the official, David Morens, comes following the Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/2964227\/ecohealth-alliance-email-release-confirms-fauci-aide-used-private-account-discuss-covid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"released\">release<\/a> of emails by the private research firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2450841\/head-of-ecohealth-alliance-to-be-questioned-in-house-covid-19-origins-inquiry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"released\">EcoHealth Alliance<\/a> showing that Morens requested for EcoHealth President Peter Daszak to communicate exclusively via Morens\u2019s private Gmail account.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecohealthalliance.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Emails-02.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>email<\/a> from Daszak to Morens dated April 26, 2020, says that Daszak will \u201ccommunicate with [Morens] via gmail from now on\u201d about the coronavirus, confirming allegations by congressional Republicans that Morens may have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ecohealth-alliance-email-release-confirms-fauci-aide-used-private-account-to-discuss-covid\/\" title=\"Email release from EcoHealth Alliance confirms that Fauci aide discussed COVID using private account\">violated federal records statutes<\/a> at the early stages of the pandemic to avoid government and public scrutiny.<\/p>\n<h2>Timeline of the Morens investigation<\/h2>\n<p>The Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/1111403\/house-gop-investigate-fauci-aide-for-using-private-email-to-avoid-covid-origins-scrutiny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"investigating\">investigating<\/a> Morens since last June following the release of emails from Morens\u2019s government account encouraging NIH colleagues to contact him via his Gmail to avoid Freedom of Information Act requests.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2021, Morens told colleagues via email that he would \u201cdelete anything [he didn\u2019t] want to see in the New York Times\u201d from his government account.<\/p>\n<p>Following investigations by both the subcommittee and the National Archives and Records Administration for potentially destroying government records, Morens was placed on administrative leave from his position at NIAID last fall.<\/p>\n<p>Morens <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/davidmorens\/details\/experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"served\">served<\/a> as the Senior Advisor to the Director of NIAID in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pennsylvanias-school-choice-sellout-shows-teachers-unions-still-own-the-democrats\/\" title=\"PA's School Choice Sellout: Unions Still Control Dems\">part-time capacity<\/a> since 1998 and took on the position full-time in 2022. Before then, Morens served in various research roles at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and was the head of the Epidemiology Department at the University of Hawaii School of Public Health.<\/p>\n<p>Morens voluntarily complied with the subcommittee\u2019s request for a transcribed interview in January, at which time he denied all allegations of destroying government records or utilizing his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/andrew-cuomo-was-offered-more-than-4-million-for-pandemic-leadership-book-report-says\/\" title=\"Andrew Cuomo Was Offered More Than  Million For Pandemic \u2018Leadership\u2019 Book, Report Says\">personal email account<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>According to subcommittee Chairman Brad Wenstrup (R-OH), Morens \u201cabruptly ceased attempting to reach an agreement with the Select Subcommittee\u201d regarding additional document requests following the transcribed interview.<\/p>\n<h2>The subpoena <\/h2>\n<p>Wenstrup highlighted in a letter accompanying the subpoena that Morens \u201cpersonally conducted the search of [his] own e-mail inbox\u201d in an attempt to comply with the subcommittee\u2019s request, presenting a clear conflict of interest in the investigation process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour records are necessary to inform the Select Subcommittee\u2019s investigation of the origins of and federal government\u2019s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and potential legislation,\u201d Wenstrup wrote to Morens.<\/p>\n<p>House Oversight Committee Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/james-comer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"James Comer\">James Comer<\/a> (R-KY) issued the subpoena following Wenstrup\u2019s investigation. It demands that Morens provide unredacted copies of all documents and communications since November 2019 between himself and several former officials at the National Institutes of Health, including Fauci and former NIH Directors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/2795133\/former-nih-director-pandemic-lab-leak-social-distancing-criticized-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Francis Collins \">Francis Collins <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2450848\/nihs-silence-on-fauci-aide-extremely-concerning-congress-threatens-subpoena\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Francis Collins \">Lawrence Tabak<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The subpoena also requests that Morens provide the committee with all of his communications to World Health Organization lead scientist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/104284\/top-virologists-who-changed-tune-on-covid-19-lab-leak-theory-received-millions-in-nih-grants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Jeremy Farrar\">Jeremy Farrar<\/a> and Daszak.<\/p>\n<p>Although then-NIH Director Tabak was subpoenaed by the Oversight Committee regarding Morens\u2019s emails last October, this subpoena will specifically target Morens\u2019s personal emails outside of the NIH\u2019s direct supervision.<\/p>\n<h2>A key piece of the origins investigation<\/h2>\n<p>EcoHealth Alliance, a nonprofit viral research organization with the mission of preventing pandemics, has come under significant scrutiny since the outbreak of the coronavirus in part because of its receipt of NIH funding for research conducted at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/wuhan-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Wuhan Institute of Virology\">Wuhan Institute of Virology<\/a> in China.<\/p>\n<p>Several emails from Morens\u2019s private Gmail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/2962374\/house-republicans-probe-secret-covid-emails-fauci-aide-boston-university-professor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"published\">published<\/a> by EcoHealth between Morens, Daszak, and Boston University epidemiologist and former NIH employee Gerald Keusch outline Daszak\u2019s frustration with the NIH following the suspension of funding for the project \u201cUnderstanding the risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exclusive-reps-comer-jordan-call-on-fauci-to-explain-possible-discrepancy-in-sworn-congressional-testimony\/\" title=\"EXCLUSIVE: Reps. Comer, Jordan Call On Fauci To Explain Possible \u2018Discrepancy\u2019 In Sworn Congressional Testimony\">bat coronavirus emergence<\/a>,\u201d which was conducted at the WIV.<\/p>\n<p>The project was authorized to examine SARS-related viruses in southern China, including developing a catalog of the genomic sequences of various high-risk diseases, and funding was quickly terminated following the outbreak of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Morens told Daszak in the April 26, 2020, private Gmail that EcoHealth \u201cshould be clearly documenting these things for potential future use, in your own defense, and for history\u201d regarding the difficulties with the NIH about the project.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Morens also informed Daszak that Fauci was \u201cfully aware\u201d of the project\u2019s alleged involvement with the origin of SARS-CoV-2 and was \u201cinvolved in some sort of damage control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morens has until April 30 to provide the requested documents to the committee.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In an exclusive move, House Republicans subpoenaed David Morens, a former top aide to Anthony Fauci, over his use of a private email for government matters on COVID-19 origins.
