States facing challenges enforcing documentary proof \u200cof citizenship \u200brequirements for voter registration are also \u2062highlighted.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<p><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>Left-wing corporate media went on a blitz this weekend dishonestly claiming legislation requiring people to prove their citizenship to register to vote is needless \u2014 even though the federal government currently prohibits states from requiring would-be voters to show documentary evidence of their citizenship status to vote in federal elections.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside former President Donald Trump, Speaker Mike Johnson announced on Friday that House Republicans would propose legislation requiring individuals to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-administration-sues-arizona-over-proof-of-citizenship-requirement-for-federal-elections\/\" title=\"Biden Administration Sues Arizona Over Proof Of Citizenship Requirement For Federal Elections\">show documentary proof<\/a> of citizenship when registering to vote for federal elections. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-337779730\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4338e5882b3421ecae66385a773da160 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4338e5882b3421ecae66385a773da160\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/trump-mike-johnson-redundant-non-citizen-bill-vote-1235003973\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rolling Stone<\/a> called the legislation \u201credundant\u201d and said noncitizens voting is \u201calready illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/maddowblog\/trump-johnson-push-solution-non-existent-election-problem-rcna147816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MSNBC\u2019s<\/a> Steve Benen claimed Johnson and Trump \u201care pushing a ban on non-citizen voting, which (a) almost never happens; and (b) is already illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/04\/12\/1244302080\/trump-johnson-noncitizen-voting-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NPR<\/a> ran the headline \u201cRepublicans aim to stop noncitizen voting in federal elections. It\u2019s already illegal,\u201d referring in the story to a \u201cmyth that immigrants are exerting undue influence on American elections.\u201d NPR further claimed \u201cfederal law requires voters to provide a unique identification number when they register to vote and because that is usually either a driver\u2019s license or Social Security number, election officials can usually work with those agencies to verify citizenship status.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NBC News published a piece titled \u201cTrump and Mike Johnson zero in on noncitizen voting. It\u2019s already illegal and very rare.\u201d The article, however, almost immediately admits that noncitizens can vote in certain local elections. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-f25fad4f846da9f62cc895aa017ae0aa fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-f25fad4f846da9f62cc895aa017ae0aa\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt is already a crime to register or vote as a noncitizen in all state and federal elections, though Washington, D.C., and a handful of municipalities in California, Maryland and Vermont allow noncitizen voting in local elections,\u201d NBC News\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/elections\/trump-johnson-noncitizen-voting-illegal-rare-rcna147567\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jane C. Timm<\/a> wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-immigrant-voting-noncitizens-elections-explained-cf4c73b336147b5f5d9c2a22b2564994\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declared<\/a> that \u201cNoncitizen voting isn\u2019t an issue in federal elections, regardless of conspiracy theories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But just because something is \u201cillegal\u201d doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s not happening, or that the law is being enforced. You might outlaw lying, but unless the law includes a means of determining whether a person is lying, the law will be largely toothless.<\/p>\n<p>The AP continued: <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9c13ffafb32ba3d474cf17d0680e4235 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-9c13ffafb32ba3d474cf17d0680e4235\"><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>There isn\u2019t any indication that noncitizens vote in significant numbers in federal elections or that they will in the future. It\u2019s already a crime for them to do so. And we know it\u2019s not a danger because various states have examined their rolls and found very few noncitizen voters.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Various states may have \u201cfound very few noncitizen voters\u201d because the form that states are required to use when registering voters for federal elections lacks any safeguards. <\/p>\n<p>Federal voter registration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eac.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/eac_assets\/1\/6\/Federal_Voter_Registration_ENG.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forms<\/a> do not require documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC). Instead, an individual who registers to vote simply checks a box affirming he is a U.S. citizen. <\/p>\n<p><strong>[READNEXT:[READNEXT:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/12\/not-a-single-democrat-witness-in-congress-agreed-only-citizens-should-vote-in-federal-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Not A Single Democrat Witness In Congress Agreed Only Citizens Should Vote In Federal Elections<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>States that try to require DPOC are often met with federal roadblocks, as Arizona was \u2014 but many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/border-patrol-arrests-two-illegal-immigrants-from-yemen-on-fbi-terror-watch-list\/\" title=\"Border Patrol Arrests Two Illegal Immigrants From Yemen On FBI Terror Watch List\">corporate media outlets<\/a> either glossed over that fact or left it out entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona voters <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/10\/what-a-viral-voting-claim-got-wrong-and-why-americans-are-still-right-to-be-concerned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved<\/a> a law in 2004 that required DPOC to vote, but a 2013 Supreme Court ruling forced the state to accept the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/court-wisconsins-unauthorized-use-of-federal-voter-registration-form-violates-state-law\/\" title=\"Court: Wisconsin's use of unauthorized federal voter registration form breaks state law.\">federal voter registration form<\/a> with its lax requirement that applicants simply check a box claiming citizenship. Arizona responded by allowing voters who could not prove their citizenship to register as \u201cfederal-only\u201d voters, but it was forced in 2018 to \u201cnot only accept federal-only applications lacking proof of citizenship but also grant a federal-only registration to applicants who used a state form but couldn\u2019t provide proof of citizenship,\u201d as my colleague M.D. Kittle <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/19\/ballots-cast-without-proof-of-citizenship-exploded-after-lawfare-crippled-arizona-election-laws\/\">explained<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A federal judge recently <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/01\/court-affirms-arizonas-need-to-keep-noncitizens-off-voter-rolls-but-makes-it-harder-to-do-so\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruled<\/a> that Arizona has an interest in keeping noncitizens off its voter rolls and upheld its DPOC requirement for registrants using the state form. But a few months earlier in September, the same judge also struck down state laws that required DPOC to vote in presidential elections and via mail. <\/p>\n<p>In the 2020 election, 11,600 voters voted using a federal-only ballot, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/azfreenews.com\/2021\/09\/over-11600-no-proof-of-citizenship-required-federal-ballots-cast-in-2020-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AZ Free News<\/a>. President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/election\/2020\/results\/state\/arizona\/president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won<\/a> the state by 10,457 votes. <\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, while the proposed legislation from House Republicans would apply to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/official-election-data-drops-2020-bombshell-thousands-of-ballots-may-have-been-illegally-cast\/\" title=\"Official Election Data Drops 2020 Bombshell: Thousands of Ballots May Have Been Illegally Cast\">federal voter registration forms<\/a>, corporate media are incorrect in suggesting that noncitizen voting is \u201calready illegal\u201d everywhere in America. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/12\/loophole-in-weak-north-carolina-voter-id-law-lets-just-about-anyone-cast-a-ballot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Noncitizens<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/sf-school-board-non-citizen-voting-upheld-proposition-n-california-court-of-appeal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">San Francisco<\/a> can also vote in school board elections if they have a child under 19 living in the city. Certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/united-states-noncitizen-voting-cities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">municipalities<\/a> in Maryland and Vermont also allow noncitizens to vote. And in New York City, a judge <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/23\/null-and-void-court-declares-new-york-city-law-letting-noncitizens-vote-is-unconstitutional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently struck down<\/a> a law that sought to open up the city\u2019s municipal elections to more than 800,000 noncitizens.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-827e23549c7aeb2adc17e64e30d9b054 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-827e23549c7aeb2adc17e64e30d9b054\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">    \t\t\t\t\t   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the weekend, left-wing corporate media misleadingly criticized legislation mandating citizens to prove their eligibility to vote as unnecessary.
