Taxpayers\u200d Jeffery LeMieux and David DeValk requested direct \u2063court action. Evers used his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wisconsin-republicans-look-to-limit-democratic-governors-veto-power\/\" title=\"Wisconsin GOP seeks to curb Dem governor's veto power\">partial\u2062 veto power<\/a> to extend school funding \u2063over centuries, prompting legal action. The case questions the \u200bgovernor&#8217;s\u2063 authority \u2062and budget decisions.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce\u2019s Litigation Center, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/wisconsin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Wisconsin\u2019s<\/a> largest business lobby, asked the state Supreme Court to strike down a veto from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/tony-evers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Gov. Tony Evers<\/a> (D-WI) that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-left-owns-too-much-cultural-ground-without-the-few-conservative-harbors-like-fox-news-giving-it-away\/\" title=\"The Left Owns Too Much Cultural Ground Without The Few Conservative Harbors Like Fox News Giving It Away\">funded public schools<\/a> for the next 400 years.<\/p>\n<p>Taxpayers Jeffery LeMieux and David DeValk filed an original action petition to bypass lower courts and head to the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hollywood-celebs-rage-in-defeat-after-barrett-confirmation-revolting-disgraceful-unconscionable\/\" title=\"Hollywood Celebs Rage in Defeat After Barrett Confirmation: 'Revolting. Unconscionable'\">high court<\/a>, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2024\/04\/15\/wmc-challenges-evers-partial-veto-that-extended-school-aid-400-years\/73329834007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><em>Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/em><\/a>. They are asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court to strike down the partial veto, which increased school funding for the next four centuries. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe law is clear,\u201d WMC Litigation Center Deputy Director Nathan Kane said in a statement. \u201cVoters and their elected legislators are the ones empowered to increase taxes, no one else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evers used his partial veto powers to strike through a hyphen and \u201c20\u201d from a reference to the 2024-25 school year. In doing so, he increased school funding by $325 per student per year for the next 402 years. Before his partial veto, the budget was set to increase school funding by $325 per student for only the next two years.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>In Wisconsin, governors can single out words, numbers, or punctuation. While 44 other states have line-item vetos, Wisconsin is unique, the only state with a partial veto. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are saying, \u2018How can he do this?&#8217;\u201d former Republican Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/evers-veto-400-years-wisconsin-school-funding-67a7847e4a24ea86f7d16123356f770d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a> of the Evers veto. \u201cWell, he did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/news\/wisconsin-governors-partial-veto-powers-would-weaken-under-proposed-amendment#:~:text=Tony%20Evers%20made%20national%20headlines%20when%20he%20used%20his%20partial,that%20had%20originally%20been%20intended.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Other Wisconsin governors<\/a> have used the partial veto as well. Former Gov. Scott Walker used his partial veto powers to make one state program last indefinitely, in what is known as the \u201cthousand-year veto.\u201d Between 1991 and before Evers\u2019s school funding veto, 31 partial vetoes were reportedly used by Wisconsin governors of both parties to increase state spending above that set by lawmakers. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The WMC is asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court, which has a left-leaning majority, to strike down Evers\u2019s veto as it relates to schools and make note that the state\u2019s constitution \u201cforbids the governor from striking individual digits in an enrolled bill to create a new year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn no uncertain terms, 402 years is not less than or part of the two-year duration approved by the Legislature \u2014 it is far more,\u201d WMC Litigation Center Executive Director Scott Rosenow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wispolitics.com\/2024\/wmc-taxpayers-challenge-undemocratic-and-unconstitutional-400-year-veto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>said<\/a>. \u201cThe governor overstepped his authority with this partial veto, at the expense of taxpayers, and we believe oversight by the Court is necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wisconsin&#8217;s largest business lobby, the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce&#8217;s Litigation Center, urged the state Supreme Court to overturn Gov.
