The hearing is scheduled for April 23 at 9:30\u2064 a.m. EST.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York<\/a> Justice Juan Merchan announced he will hear arguments next week on prosecutors\u2019 arguments that former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> should face punishment for allegedly violating the gag order in the hush money trial.<\/p>\n<p>Hours into the start of the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/crime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criminal<\/a> trial against a former president, prosecutors with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg\u2019s office called on Merchan to sanction Trump for violating the gag order by sharing at least three social media posts over the weekend. (Jeenah Moon\/Pool Photo via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Assistant District Attorney Chris Conroy asked that Trump be fined $1,000 for each post and be reminded that he can be jailed if he continues to violate the gag order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe defendant is aware of the April 1 order. We know that from various posts he had made,\u201d Conroy said.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the proceedings, prosecutor Joshua Steinglass asked Trump\u2019s counsel to argue why the former president shouldn\u2019t be held in contempt for allegedly violating the judge\u2019s gag order. Steinglass argued that Trump\u2019s efforts would continue into the current trial, citing plans by the defense to attack the credibility of Bragg\u2019s star witness, Michael Cohen.<\/p>\n<p>Among the posts in question, prosecutors cited one from Wednesday in which Trump\u00a0references\u00a0\u201ctwo sleazebags,\u201d who, in the context, are Cohen and Stormy Daniels.<\/p>\n<p>Steinglass added that the witnesses in this case \u201chave incurred the wrath of Trump supporters,\u201d adding that Trump \u201cskillfully, obsessively\u201d puts out posts attacking his opponents both in the political sphere and in court.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Judge Juan Merchan poses in his chambers in New York, March 14, 2024. (AP Photo\/Seth Wenig, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Merchan\u2019s decision to set the hearing over prosecutors\u2019 motion to sanction Trump came after a lunch recess and before the start of jury screening, which on Monday afternoon focused on 96 potential juries. The total pool for potential jurors is said to be approximately 500 people.<\/p>\n<p>While jury selection may continue into next week, the judge said that once the panel is finalized, he will be handed two lists: one containing the jurors\u2019 numbers, and the other containing their names and numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Merchan said he will then give one copy of each list to the prosecution and one copy of each list to Trump\u2019s defense lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>The lists are \u201cnot to be photographed or duplicated, in any way copied in any way shape or form,\u201d Merchan told the court.<\/p>\n<p>The core of the case features allegations of various alleged sex scandals that prosecutors say Trump attempted to conceal with the help of his former attorney and fixer Michael <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/michael-cohen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cohen<\/a> and ranking executives at the <em>National Enquirer<\/em>. Bragg is seeking to elevate the paperwork falsification, a misdemeanor on its own, to a felony crime.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has made history as the first former or current U.S. president ever to face a criminal trial.
