The lawsuit \u200bchallenges two bills passed by Democrats that \u200climit collaboration with federal authorities. Law enforcement\u200b officials argue that \u2062these laws hinder efforts to ensure\u2063 community safety. The case highlights the ongoing debate \u2064on immigration policies in\u200d Colorado.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<figure>                         <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Colorado\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/denver\/2023\/01\/05\/denver-destination-sanctuary-migrants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sixth-most<\/a> populous county is suing the state over a pair of laws that prohibit local governments from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nyc-mayor-says-city-should-walk-back-sanctuary-laws\/\" title=\"NYC Mayor Urges Reconsideration of Sanctuary Laws\">assisting federal officials<\/a> with immigration enforcement. On Monday, commissioners for Douglas County, an affluent suburban area located between Denver and Colorado Springs, gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tJ0tuQMDtJM\">a press conference<\/a> with community leaders and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/president-trump-pledges-orderly-transition-of-power\/\" title=\"President Trump pledges orderly transition of power\">local law enforcement<\/a> to announce the new lawsuit. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal policies along the southern border have resulted in an unlimited string of illegal immigrants into our communities,\u201d said Douglas County Commissioner Chairman George Teal, who opened the press conference. \u201cWe see it as the duty of the county to push back against these state laws that prohibit us from working with federal authorities to keep Douglas County and our communities safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit filed Monday highlights two pieces of legislation passed by far-left Democrats: <a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/hb19-1124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House Bill 19-1124<\/a>, passed in 2019, and <a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/hb23-1100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House Bill 23-1100<\/a>, passed in 2023. The first bars local law enforcement from arresting illegal migrants and holding them in custody based solely on their violation of federal immigration laws. The second law prohibits local cooperation with federal authorities by detaining illegal migrants in various facilities. <\/p>\n<p>Douglas County Undersheriff David Walcher said the two bills undermined the ability of law enforcement to keep Colorado communities safe. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have all these other federal partners that we cooperate with \u2014 the FBI, the Secret Service, Alcohol Tobacco and Firearm Enforcement, the Drug Enforcement Administration,\u201d Walcher said. \u201cWe cooperate with our federal partners, and things like this tell us we can\u2019t even cooperate with ICE, who is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/border-patrol-chief-resists-biden-i-cannot-comply-with-demand-to-use-non-legal-immigration-terms\/\" title=\"Border Patrol Chief Resists Biden: \u2018I Cannot\u2019 Comply With Demand To Use Non-Legal Immigration Terms\">federal law enforcement agency<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is absolutely ridiculous,\u201d Walcher added. \u201c\u2026Shame on the state of Colorado.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit filed in a Denver District Court alleges the state\u2019s immigration laws violate the Colorado Constitution on intergovernmental relationships and create \u201cdangerous conditions\u201d for both residents and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/65-times-biden-gutted-border-security-since-taking-the-white-house\/\" title=\"Biden's Border Security Weakened 65 Times Since Inauguration\">foreign law-breakers<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Denver is a top foreign migrant destination. Upwards of <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradosun.com\/2024\/04\/02\/migrants-hotels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">40,000<\/a> new arrivals have been bussed from the border over the last two years to Denver. This has led other local governments to pass ordinances <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/11\/colorado-towns-construct-legislative-walls-to-counter-mass-illegal-immigration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">designed <\/a>to insulate towns from the crisis. <\/p>\n<p>Denver Mayor Mike Johnston\u2019s office <a href=\"https:\/\/denverite.com\/2024\/02\/08\/denver-immigrants-arrivals-decreasing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> the city may spend up to $180 million to deal with the consequences of record-breaking illegal migration this year. In neighboring Aurora, city leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/kdvr.com\/news\/local\/aurora-weighing-their-own-resolution-in-light-of-migrant-crisis\/#:~:text=Aurora%20council%20votes%20on%20its%20migrant%20response&#038;text=The%20resolution%20says%2C%20%E2%80%9CThe%20City,the%20sponsor%20of%20the%20resolution.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed<\/a> a resolution to declare no services for migrants who enter Denver\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado-demographics.com\/cities_by_population\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">largest suburb<\/a>. Other local governments in and around Colorado Springs have passed similar measures. <\/p>\n<p><strong>[READ:[READ:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/11\/colorado-towns-construct-legislative-walls-to-counter-mass-illegal-immigration\/\">Colorado Towns Construct Le<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/11\/colorado-towns-construct-legislative-walls-to-counter-mass-illegal-immigration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">g<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/11\/colorado-towns-construct-legislative-walls-to-counter-mass-illegal-immigration\/\">islative \u2018Walls\u2019 To Counter Mass Illegal Immigration<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When reporters asked whether any other counties have joined the suit beyond El Paso County, which surrounds Colorado Springs, Teal said so many had expressed interest he \u201clost count.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t just a Douglas County problem,\u201d Teal said. \u201cThis is a problem in every community in Colorado.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other commissioners for Douglas County at Monday\u2019s press conference brought up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/merkel-calls-on-putin-to-influence-belarus-to-stop-migrant-crisis\/\" title=\"Merkel Calls on Putin to Influence Belarus to Stop Migrant Crisis\">migrant crisis unfolding<\/a> in Denver as their reason to take action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe numbers are stark,\u201d said Douglas County Commissioner Abe Laydon. \u201cWe heard many months ago that 40,000 Venezuelan migrants were being bused to Denver from Texas, at a cost of about $120 million to the city and county of Denver. In Douglas County, we are not going to be cutting services to our residents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Douglas County Commissioner Lora Thomas took the podium next. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I go to Denver, I see a much different community than the place where I grew up,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd what I see in Denver is not what I want to see here in Douglas County.\u201d <\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist and the author of Social Justice Redux, a conservative newsletter on culture, health, and wellness.
