A senior administration official on the call said the defense mounted by Israel, backed by a military coalition that included the U.S., United Kingdom, France, and Jordan, inflicted a \u201cspectacular defeat\u201d on Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral hundred drones and missiles launched in the course of several hours, and almost every single one of them knocked out of the sky and they didn\u2019t make it into Israel,\u201d National Security Council spokesman <strong>John Kirby<\/strong> said on Fox News on Sunday. \u201cThat\u2019s a terrific testament to the superiority of the Israeli military but also to our own military superiority and the effort, the risk, the resources that President Biden committed to helping defend Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense\/2965457\/israel-with-foreign-help-intercepted-most-of-iranian-missiles-and-drones\/\"><strong>ISRAEL, WITH FOREIGN HELP, INTERCEPTED MOST IRANIAN MISSILES AND DRONES<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>BIDEN URGES RESTRAINT:<\/strong> Fearing an escalatory tit for tat that could spiral into a wider war, <strong>President Joe Biden<\/strong> in his call with Israeli Prime Minister <strong>Benjamin Netanyahu<\/strong> urged Israel to take the total defeat of Iran\u2019s massive attack as a win and temper its response. \u201cI told him that Israel demonstrated a remarkable capacity to defend against and defeat even unprecedented attacks \u2014 sending a clear message to its foes that they cannot effectively threaten the security of Israel,\u201d Biden said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2024\/04\/13\/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-irans-attacks-against-the-state-of-israel\/\">statement<\/a>. Administration officials said the U.S. will continue to defend Israel but will not join Israel in any retaliatory attacks.<\/p>\n<p>That provoked howls of protests from Republicans on Capitol Hill who accused Biden of projecting weakness at a time when Iran needed to be sent a strong message of strength. \u201cPresident Biden is wrong telling Israel they should not respond,\u201d <strong>Sen. Tom Cotton<\/strong> (R-AK) said on Fox News. \u201cImagine America getting 300 drones and missiles shot at our homeland and having a country telling us not to respond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not asking for that. They\u2019re not asking for it. But I think we go from that to the other extreme, which is Joe Biden telling Netanyahu, take the win, don\u2019t do anything, and then his people leaking it to the media, leaking it to the press,\u201d <strong>Sen. Marco Rubio<\/strong> (R-FL) said on CNN. \u201cThere\u2019s only one reason they leaked that, and that is that so, when Israel does respond, the White House can say, we told them not to do it, and at least somehow, in some way appease the so-called peace activists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople that are out there cheering military attacks of this scale and scope are not peace activists. These are antisemites, anti-Israel, pro-terrorist elements out there, and we need to stop calling them peace activists,\u201d Rubio said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense\/2965325\/israeli-military-says-iran-launched-drone-attack\/\"><strong>BIDEN PUSHES \u2018COMMITMENT TO ISRAEL\u2019S SECURITY\u2019 AMID IRANIAN ATTACK<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE TRUMP PRECEDENT:<\/strong> Several critics of the former president noted that under his administration, Donald Trump declined to respond when Iran in January 2020 fired a volley of missiles at a base housing U.S. troops in Iraq, retaliation for Trump\u2019s drone strike that killed top Iranian Gen. <strong>Qassem Soleimani<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At rallies and in recent interviews, Trump has made the dubious claim that Iran notified him the missiles were for show and not intended to hit the base. \u201cThey let us know, don\u2019t move. We\u2019re going to have to hit you back. Psychologically, we have to do that,\u201d Trump said on Fox News on Feb. 4. \u201cNow, they had to do it because they have people and they have to show strength. So they aimed the missiles, but they said, please don\u2019t attack us. We\u2019re not going to hit you. That was respect. We had respect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Republican <strong>Rep. Adam Kinzinger<\/strong>, a sharp critic of Trump who is now a paid contributor on CNN, remembers it differently. \u201cOne hundred soldiers were injured with traumatic brain injuries. Remember Donald Trump said, \u2018Oh, they\u2019re just some headaches?\u2019 Yeah, not to those people. How did we respond to that missile barrage against our base? We did nothing,\u201d Kinzinger said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AdamKinzinger\/status\/1779616615555838322\">video post on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember when they shot down a $100 million-something drone, which by the way is not like a little drone \u2014 it\u2019s about the size of an airliner. And we responded by \u2014 oh that\u2019s right, Trump did nothing,\u201d Kinzinger said. \u201cI have my disagreements with this administration, but let\u2019s quit pretending Donald Trump was anything but the worst foreign policy president of my generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?534741-1\/fmr-president-trump-holds-rally-schnecksville-pa\">rally<\/a> Saturday night in Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, Trump, as is his habit, insisted nothing bad would have happened if he was still in the White House. \u201cThe weakness that we have shown, it\u2019s unbelievable. And it would not have happened if we were in office,\u201d he told the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think Trump is delusional on this point,\u201d Trump\u2019s former national security adviser and frequent critic <strong>John Bolton<\/strong> said on CNN. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t have any idea what to do in the Middle East in this situation. Remember when he threatened fire and fury against North Korea? Within a year, he had fallen in love with <strong>Kim Jong Un<\/strong>. McConnell\">prime minister meets<\/a> with President <strong>Joe Biden<\/strong> at the White House, and then it\u2019s a quick trip across the Potomac for consultation with Defense Secretary <strong>Lloyd Austin<\/strong> at the Pentagon.<\/p>\n<p>The meetings come as public sentiment in Iraq is increasingly opposed to U.S. troops remaining in the country, which number about 5,000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UKRAINE AID REMAINS IN LIMBO: <\/strong>With Ukraine losing ground to Russian advances because of its desperate shortage of ammunition and Israel facing the threat of attack from Iran, House Republicans have planned to make the first order of business today \u201cappliance week,\u201d with consideration of bills including the Hands Off Our Home Appliances Act, Liberty in Laundry Act, Clothes Dryer Reliability Act, Refrigerator Freedom Act, Affordable Air Conditioning Act, and Stop Unaffordable Dishwasher Standards Act.<\/p>\n<p>But the weekend attack on Israel prompted a change in plans. \u201cIn light of Iran\u2019s unjustified attack on Israel, the House will move from its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/heres-how-congress-is-responding-to-irans-attack-on-israel\/\" title=\"Check Out Congress's Reaction to Iran's Assault on Israel\">previously announced legislative schedule<\/a> next week to instead consider legislation that supports our ally Israel and holds Iran and its terrorist proxies accountable,\u201d House Majority Leader <strong>Steve Scalise<\/strong> (R-LA) in a statement on Saturday. \u201cThe House of Representatives stands strongly with Israel, and there must be consequences for this unprovoked attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No mention was made of aid to Ukraine, which Democrats insist must be part of any bipartisan supplemental bill. \u201cWe obviously have to work together to get this done,\u201d <strong>Rep. Mike Lawler <\/strong>(R-NY) said on CNN. \u201cI\u2019m calling on Speaker Johnson to bring a bill to the floor this week. I\u2019m calling on Chuck Schumer and the White House to work with House Republicans. We are in a divided government. We have to work together. There has to be compromise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that the speaker has been very clear. He supports Ukraine funding. He supports funding for Israel. He supports the Asia package that\u2019s part of the national security supplemental. And he has made it clear that he sees that the path is for that to come to the House floor this week,\u201d <strong>Rep. Mike Turner <\/strong>(R-OH) said on NBC. \u201cI think it will have overwhelming support, both the Ukraine, Israel, and Asia packages, not just because of what\u2019s happened with Iran escalating the conflict in the Middle East but because these are allies that need and deserve our support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the fastest way to be able to support our partners in Ukraine and our ally in Israel is to move forward with what the Senate passed in a bipartisan way. That bipartisan bill gets the funding to Ukraine, it gets the funding to Israel, it also helps us on the Indo-Pacific and the border,\u201d National Security Council spokesman <strong>John Kirby<\/strong> said on Fox News. \u201cIf that bipartisan legislation gets to the floor in the House, it will pass. There\u2019s enough votes for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHouse Republicans and the Republican Party understand the necessity of standing with Israel,\u201d House Speaker <strong>Mike Johnson<\/strong> (R-LA) said on Fox News, suggesting aid for Ukraine could be included. \u201cWe\u2019re going to try again this week, and the details of that package are being put together. Right now, we\u2019re looking at the options and all these supplemental issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/2965545\/house-republicans-set-sights-on-ukraine-and-israel-aid-following-iran-missile-attack\/\"><strong>HOUSE REPUBLICANS SET SIGHTS ON UKRAINE AND ISRAEL AID FOLLOWING IRAN MISSILE ATTACK<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>UKRAINE WATCHES AS US COALITION DEFENDS ISRAEL: <\/strong>Ukraine has to feel a little envy as it witnessed how effective a U.S.-led coalition could be in ensuring that Israel was able to neutralize the exact kind of drone and missile attack that Russia is routinely using to destroy critical infrastructure and kill hundreds of civilians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe [Iranian] strike package was modeled on those the Russians have used repeatedly against Ukraine to great effect. The attack caused more limited damage than intended, likely because the Iranians underestimated the tremendous advantages Israel has in defending against such strikes compared with Ukraine,\u201d the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.understandingwar.org\/backgrounder\/iran%E2%80%99s-attempt-hit-israel-russian-style-strike-package-failedfor-now\">assessment<\/a> released last night. \u201cUkrainian air defenses have averaged interception rates of only about 46% of Russian ballistic missiles during recent large strikes. The Iranians likely expected that Israeli rates would be higher than the Ukrainian rates but not above 90% against such a large ballistic missile salvo \u2014 the Russians, after all, have never fired close to that many large ballistic missiles in a single strike against Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsrael\u2019s air defense system has a number of obvious advantages over Ukrainian air defense,\u201d the ISW noted, citing Israel\u2019s \u201cmuch larger and robust anti-missile and air defense systems and stocks of interceptors\u201d and the \u201c1,000 kilometers separating its borders from Iran\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsrael and its allies used that distance to intercept all of the incoming drones and cruise missiles with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-massive-explosion-rocks-ukraines-capital-city-of-kyiv\/\" title=\"BREAKING: Massive Explosion Rocks Ukraine\u2019s Capital City Of Kyiv\">ground-based air defense<\/a> and combat aircraft,\u201d the assessment said. \u201cUkraine lacks both of these advantages. \u2026 Ukraine has, in particular, been unable to use combat aircraft to shoot down Russian drones and cruise missiles at scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine is still awaiting the arrival of U.S.-made F-16s, which Ukrainian President <strong>Volodymyr Zelensky <\/strong>recently said would be employed in a counter-drone role. \u201cIt has long been known that both drones and cruise missiles can be shot down by combat aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense\/2965612\/us-officials-do-not-envision-participation-in-israels-counterattack-and-stress-deescalation\/\"><strong>US OFFICIALS DO \u2018NOT
