They\u2019re hollow because it\u2019s clear neither Trudeau nor his government did much to protect Canada\u2019s electoral system from foreign influence in the years that followed. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chinese Election Interference<\/h2>\n<p>On Monday, Ottawa\u2019s lead spy agency, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.md\/Yl9SZ#selection-1961.88-1961.214\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confirmed<\/a> that Communist China interfered in Canada\u2019s 2019 and 2021 federal elections. These efforts \u201cfocused primarily on supporting those viewed to be either \u2018pro-PRC\u2019 or \u2018neutral\u2019 on issues of interest to the [Chinese] government,\u201d a slide shown to Canadian officials reads, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.md\/97uI5#selection-4083.91-4083.170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Toronto Star<\/a>, the briefing provided to the Foreign Interference Commission further revealed that, during the 2021 contest, the CCP specifically aimed \u201cto deter Canadians, especially those \u2018of Chinese heritage,\u2019 from backing the Conservative party, then-leader Erin O\u2019Toole, and B.C. Conservative candidate Kenny Chiu.\u201d Conservative candidates took a hardline approach to China during the 2021 campaign, often highlighting the CCP\u2019s brutal treatment of <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/uyghurs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Uyghurs<\/a> and criticizing <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/huawei\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Huawei<\/a>, a Chinese tech giant suspected of facilitating spyware for Beijing. <\/p>\n<p>Chiu ultimately lost his 2021 election bid, while Trudeau\u2019s Liberal Party won both the 2019 and 2021 elections.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-26b16595f89eb2a53354b78843ef2255 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-26b16595f89eb2a53354b78843ef2255\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe timing of these efforts to align with Conservative polling improvement; the similarities in language with articles published by PRC state media; and the partnership agreements between these Canada-based outlets and PRC entities; all suggest that these efforts were orchestrated or directed by the PRC,\u201d the CSIS assessment reads, according to the Star. <\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Toole estimated China\u2019s interference cost Conservatives \u201cup to nine seats but added it had not changed the course of the election,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.md\/Yl9SZ#selection-1985.112-1985.185\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Reports of China\u2019s election interference began surfacing early last year, when CSIS information detailing the CCP\u2019s operations were <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.md\/TLh69\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leaked<\/a> to The Globe and Mail. Trudeau initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/03\/03\/trudeau-snubs-calls-for-beijing-election-meddling-inquiry-for-now-00085444\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rejected<\/a> Conservatives\u2019 call for an investigation into the allegations, at one point saying: \u201cCanadians can be reassured that our election integrity held\u201d in 2019 and 2021. The prime minister later acquiesced, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-64870472\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appointing<\/a> an investigator to look into the matter in March 2023. <\/p>\n<p>During Monday\u2019s briefing, CSIS called on Trudeau\u2019s government to take more effective action to address future election interference attempts, with the agency <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.md\/97uI5#selection-4505.98-4505.133\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noting<\/a> there are \u201cfew legal or political consequences\u201d for foreign actors infringing on Canada\u2019s democratic process. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-67ce238c24740065716e875c0ef43b28 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-67ce238c24740065716e875c0ef43b28\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trudeau Takes the Stand<\/h2>\n<p>Following the Foreign Interference Commission\u2019s Monday briefing on CSIS\u2019s findings, Trudeau testified before the body on Wednesday to disclose what he knew about China\u2019s actions and when he learned it. <\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of his remarks, the Liberal prime minister took a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ryangerritsen\/status\/1778147037562736744\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pot-shot<\/a> at the government run by his predecessor, Conservative PM Stephen Harper, which he contended did not conduct enough \u201coversight\u201d into Canada\u2019s \u201cnational security universe.\u201d He also hyped his government\u2019s approach to national security issues and claimed his agencies are \u201ccompliant with Canadian values, rules, and the Charter, and \u2026 doing everything necessary to keep Canadians safe.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>During the hearing, the prime minister was asked when he learned about Chinese interference operations inside Canada, specifically with respect to the 2019 nomination of Liberal MP Han Dong. A CSIS memo disclosed this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ca\/news\/other\/trudeau-briefed-on-alleged-interference-in-dong-s-riding-before-2019-election-document\/ar-BB1lioiC\">alleged <\/a>the Chinese Consulate in Toronto transported Mandarin-speaking Chinese students to Dong\u2019s district to help him secure the nomination. <\/p>\n<p>The memo noted \u201c[s]ome intelligence reporting indicated students were provided with falsified documents to allow them to vote despite not being residents of Don Valley North\u201d and that the records \u201cwere provided by individuals associated with a known proxy agent.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Dong told the commission on Tuesday, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rebelnews.com\/mp_han_dong_changes_story_on_alleged_busing_of_foreign_students_to_win_nomination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rebel News<\/a> described, that he \u201cfrequently spoke\u201d with then-Counsel General Han Tao of China\u2019s Toronto consulate.
