Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/disney-heiress-makes-documentary-criticizing-pay-gap-of-disney-employees\/\" title=\"Disney Heiress Makes Documentary Criticizing Pay Gap of Disney Employees\">members demanding<\/a> a warrant requirement, objected to the final passage and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CraigCaplan\/status\/1778833539653423594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sought a vote<\/a> on a motion to reconsider. The legislation, which got bipartisan support, would renew Section 702 for another two years and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-china-threat-is-real-and-upon-us\/\" title=\"The China Threat is Real and Upon Us\">implement reforms<\/a> to FISA.<\/p>\n<p>Amendment votes took place earlier in the day, including one for a highly-contentious offering that would add a <a href=\"https:\/\/biggs.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/congressman-biggs-introduces-major-legislation-end-warrantless-surveillance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warrant requirement<\/a> for officials wanting to do U.S. person searches in the information that gets swept up in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/devin-nunes-blasts-nsa-director-paul-nakasone-over-political-targeting-of-former-trump-official-michael-ellis\/\" title=\"Devin Nunes Blasts NSA Director Paul Nakasone over Political Targeting of Former Trump Official Michael Ellis\">foreign surveillance<\/a> under Section 702.<\/p>\n<p>That amendment, offered by Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), got support from hardline conservatives and leftist members concerned about privacy, yet it failed to pass due to a <a href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/Votes\/2024114\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">212-212 tie vote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNO WARRANT, NO FISA,\u201d Luna <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepLuna\/status\/1778820846221500899\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a post to X.<\/p>\n<p>The White House joined with some high-ranking Republicans in opposing the warrant requirement over the view that it would jeopardize national security. Turner <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMikeTurner\/status\/1778816761338433989\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> it would \u201cgive constitutional rights to Hezbollah and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cnn-finally-discovers-china-uses-u-s-media-to-attack-the-united-states\/\" title=\"CNN Finally Discovers China Uses U.S. Media To Attack The United States\">foreign adversaries<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Initially, the FISA bill offered a five-year extension to Section 702, but it got whittled down to two years after it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/house-blocks-fisa-spy-bill-opponents-demand-warrant-requirement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failed<\/a> to advance earlier this week. The shortened window will allow President Joe Biden or whatever administration may succeed him next year the chance to seek a FISA shakeup.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/trump-says-kill-fisa-as-lawmakers-consider-surveillance-reauthorization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urged<\/a> lawmakers to \u201cKILL FISA\u201d and said it was used to spy on his campaign. He was alluding to the FBI\u2019s controversial efforts to get warrants to snoop on a 2016 campaign aide under a <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/national-security\/4463961-house-unveils-warrantless-surveillance-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">different part of FISA, Section 701<\/a>, using an unverified dossier.<\/p>\n<p>House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cspan\/status\/1778076099651444805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> the FISA bill, called the Reforming Intelligence And Securing America Act, implements reforms that would \u201cactually kill the abuses\u201d directed at Trump\u2019s 2016 campaign. Johnson is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/04\/12\/donald-trump-mike-johnson-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expected<\/a> to meet with Trump later in the day on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>If the FISA legislation makes it out of the House, it will head to the Democrat-controlled Senate, where Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CraigCaplan\/status\/1776255027432095818\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> lawmakers \u201cmust act quickly on a bipartisan basis to ensure these vital national security authorities do not lapse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/SAP-H.R.-7888-FISA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">came out in support<\/a> of reauthorization but rejected the warrant requirement, saying in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jordainc\/status\/1778785434430038308\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memo<\/a> that the amendment from Biggs would \u201ceviscerate the value of Section 702.\u201d Lawmakers and Biden have until April 19 to extend Section 702 before it sunsets.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Republican-led House approved a bill to extend FISA&#8217;s Section 702 before the looming deadline, yet it faces one last obstacle before reaching the Senate.
