The \u2063situation escalated following a\u200c grand jury appearance linked \u200bto the \u200cindictment of Trump.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A spokesman for the 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trump<\/a> campaign is denying reports that an attorney for the former president\u2019s legal team, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/04\/11\/politics\/evan-corcoran-trump-legal\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Evan Corcoran<\/a>, is no longer representing him.<\/p>\n<p>Corcoran was tapped by former President Donald Trump to ward off charges in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fbi-conducts-search-of-mike-pences-indiana-home-in-classified-documents-investigation\/\" title=\"FBI Conducts Search of Mike Pence's Indiana Home in Classified Documents Investigation\">classified documents investigation<\/a>, but he became a core witness after the former president allegedly misled him about the location of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-gop-probing-whether-national-archives-conspired-with-democrats\/\" title=\"House GOP Probing Whether National Archives Conspired With Democrats\">presidential records stored<\/a> at his Mar-a-Lago resort home. Multiple sources <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/04\/11\/politics\/evan-corcoran-trump-legal\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> CNN on Thursday that the attorney made the decision to depart quietly from the Trump legal team in recent months.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>Attorney M. (AP Photo\/Jose Luis Magana)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said Corcoran \u201cremains on the legal team and is continuing to help fighting the Biden Trial witch-hunts,\u201d adding, \u201cAny assertion otherwise is fake news peddled by uninformed sources and untruthful reporting that seeks to leak disinformation and misinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>contacted Corcoran. Cheung did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Reports of Corcoran\u2019s departure come nearly one year after he was forced to appear before a grand jury investigating the case because a district judge said he could not rely on attorney-client privilege to shield notes and voice memos about his conversations with Trump, contending that prosecutors with special counsel Jack Smith\u2019s office met the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/will-the-court-allow-special-counsel-john-durham-to-see-clinton-campaign-documents\/\" title=\"Will The Court Allow Special Counsel John Durham To See Clinton Campaign Documents?\">crime-fraud exception<\/a> threshold.<\/p>\n<p>Corcoran\u2019s voice memos helped Smith indict Trump on 32 counts of willful retention of national defense information. The attorney opted not to represent Trump in the classified documents case but continued to represent him in other investigations and even joined him when he was arraigned in August last year on federal charges in Smith\u2019s separate indictment of an alleged 2020 election subversion effort.<\/p>\n<p>Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor, told the <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>the biggest problem from Corcoran\u2019s apparent departure is that \u201chis experience and knowledge leaves with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorcoran already recused himself from the classified documents case because he may be called as witness and a D.C. judge ruled that his communications fell under the crime-fraud exception and were not privileged,\u201d Rahmani added.\u00a0\u201cCorcoran currently being on the legal team or not doesn\u2019t change that analysis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former federal prosecutor said the question now is whether U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, the Trump appointee presiding over the classified documents case, is willing to deem Corcoran\u2019s communications with Trump admissible in the same way the federal judge in Washington, D.C. did.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors say Corcoran personally searched through some remaining documents at Mar-a-Lago and that Trump discussed what to do with the 38 documents marked as classified that the attorney had discovered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you find anything? \u2026 Is it bad? Good?\u201d Trump allegedly said, according to the indictment.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>Cannon has yet to set a trial date in the classified documents case and recently <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hugolowell\/status\/1778117491429880293\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"set new deadlines\">set new deadlines<\/a> for pretrial filings in early May, a strong sign that a trial won\u2019t get underway until possibly late summer. Still, questions remain as to whether this case will head to trial before the Nov. 5 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>If Trump were reelected, he would likely seek to remove both of Smith\u2019s federal criminal cases against him.
