President Biden&#8217;s dedication to tackling\u2063 student\u2062 debt concerns is evident as the presidential \u2063election\u2064 approaches.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span>The White House on Friday announced it will cancel another $7.4 billion in student loan debt, the latest in a string of loan forgiveness initiatives as President Joe Biden looks to take on Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump this fall.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Today, President Biden announced that 277,000 more Americans will get their student debt canceled, bringing the total debt relief approved by the Biden-Harris Administration to $153 billion for 4.3 million Americans through various actions,&#8221; the White House <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2024\/04\/12\/president-joe-biden-announces-7-4-billion-in-student-debt-cancellation-for-277000-more-americans-pursuing-every-path-available-to-cancel-student-debt\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> in a Friday statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Education undersecretary James Kvaal noted the 277,000 borrowers &#8220;have been making payments on their student loans for at least a decade,&#8221; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/news\/press-releases\/biden-harris-administration-announces-additional-74-billion-approved-student-debt-relief-277000-borrowers\"><span>adding<\/span><\/a><span> that &#8220;they have paid what they can afford, and they have earned loan forgiveness for the balance of their loan.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Nearly half of Friday\u2019s forgiveness sum\u2014$3.6 billion\u2014is intended for the 206,800 borrowers who have enrolled in Biden\u2019s income-driven repayment initiative known as the Saving on a Valuable Education plan. The president launched the SAVE plan last year, in defiance of the Supreme Court\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/courts\/supreme-court-strikes-down-bidens-student-loan-forgiveness-program\/\"><span>ruling<\/span><\/a><span> that he had overstepped his authority in canceling more than $400 billion of student loans for about 43 million Americans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Biden administration on Friday also waived $3.5 billion for 65,700 borrowers enrolled in other income-driven repayment plans, and an additional $300 million for 4,600 individuals through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The $7.4 billion student debt forgiveness came after Biden on Monday already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/biden-announces-new-student-loan-forgiveness-plan-for-more-than-30-million-borrowers\/\"><span>offered<\/span><\/a><span> relief to more than 30 million borrowers. In February, the administration <\/span><span>approved<\/span><span> $1.2 billion in loan forgiveness for over 150,000 borrowers enrolled in the SAVE plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The White House in a Monday statement accused Republican officials of &#8220;try[ing] every which way to block millions of their own constituents from receiving student debt cancellation,&#8221; adding that Biden would &#8220;use every tool available to cancel student debt for as many borrowers as possible, as quickly as possible.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span>\t<\/p>\n<p><span>In response, House speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpeakerJohnson\/status\/1777490298152636672\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> the administration has been circumventing the Supreme Court ruling last June and is &#8220;once again trying to buy votes&#8221; ahead of Biden\u2019s rematch with Trump in the presidential election this fall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;The reality is that these debts are not \u2018forgiven,\u2019 they are merely transferred to American taxpayers, many of whom made sacrifices to get an education they could afford,&#8221; Johnson wrote on X. &#8220;It is only just and fair for borrowers, not the American people, to be responsible for paying off their own debts.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, the White House revealed plans to forgive $7.4 billion in student loan debt.
