Governor Burt Jones. Peter J. Governor Burt Jones.<\/p>\n<p>Peter J. Skandalakis, the executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys\u2019 Council of Georgia, or his designee, will act as the Atlanta Judicial Circuit\u2019s district attorney pro tempore in the place of District Attorney Fani Willis. Under <a href=\"https:\/\/law.georgia.gov\/resources\/appointment-substitute-prosecutor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>state law<\/strong><\/a>, the council can appoint a prosecutor if a local district attorney is barred from prosecuting a case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn accordance with State Bar Rule 3.8 Special Responsibilities of a Prosecutor and pending litigation, no further comments will be made at this time,\u201d the Prosecuting Attorneys\u2019 Council of Georgia said in a brief Thursday statement.<\/p>\n<p>Jones, a Republican, was allegedly one of 16 \u201calternate\u201d or \u201cfake\u201d electors set to cast Georgia\u2019s electoral votes for former President Donald Trump instead of President Joe Biden following the 2020 election. Jones was a state senator at the time of the 2020 election, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5atlanta.com\/news\/co-conspirator-individual-number-8-ga-lt-gov-burt-jones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>according<\/strong><\/a> to WAGA-TV, Jones was \u201cUnindicted Co-Conspirator Individual Number 8\u201d in the Trump indictment.<\/p>\n<p>Willis has brought charges against Trump and others on allegations they sought to interfere with the outcome of the 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/article_059b5548-3e5f-11eb-b5b2-c3f65933d53a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>election<\/strong><\/a> in Georgia. However, her involvement has not been without controversy.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, a judge ruled Willis could stay on the Trump case if she accepted the resignation of her lead investigator, saying one of them had to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/article_aa1aee56-e2e6-11ee-917f-1b2ba8126737.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>step aside<\/strong><\/a> following allegations of an inappropriate relationship. Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/article_85272caa-ee0c-11ee-b93c-ab4c37387c6f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>appealed<\/strong><\/a> the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, in 2022, a judge blocked Willis from investigating Jones, saying she had a conflict of interest since she held a fundraiser for an opponent of the lieutenant governor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m happy to see this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mcconnell-gets-what-he-asked-for-a-back-seat-to-debt-ceiling-negotiations\/\" title=\"McConnell gets his wish: Less involvement in debt ceiling talks.\">process move forward<\/a> and look forward to the opportunity to get this charade behind me,\u201d Jones said in a statement. \u201cFani Willis has made a mockery of this legal process, as she tends to do.
