Bolsonaro was conveniently lumped in with Donald Trump, Vlad Putin, and Viktor Orb\u00e1n as a harbinger of the growing fascist threat. Alex Burns, in an embarrassing puff piece in Politico, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2023\/04\/13\/lula-global-battle-against-trumpism-00091794\">praised<\/a> Lula as a symbol of \u201cendurance of democracy in an era of extremism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bolsonaro was no more authoritarian than Lula \u2014 or Nicolas Maduro or Gustavo Petro or Luis Arce, or a bunch of other names you\u2019re never going to see pundits wringing their hands over. But those names do help Democrats here at home.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-fcd52ad12087b4149eac5d21a403a7b5 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-fcd52ad12087b4149eac5d21a403a7b5\"><\/div>\n<p>Indeed, Lula, a friend of China and Russia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/brazils-lula-not-welcome-israel-israels-foreign-minister-says-2024-02-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">likens<\/a> the liberal democracy of Israel to a Nazi state while <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2010\/05\/11\/lulas-tehran-misadventure\/\">praising<\/a> theocratic fascists in Iran. Most of America\u2019s self-styled progressives likely concur with his assessment. Lula\u2019s Working Party champions state control and the <a href=\"https:\/\/fee.org\/articles\/brazil-s-disastrous-attempt-to-re-nationalize-oil-production\/\">nationalization<\/a> of the economy as a means of saving the environment from nefarious capitalists. Or, in other words, the Brazilian is implementing the Green New Deal. What\u2019s not to like, right?<\/p>\n<p>Lulu\u2019s party is also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shellenberger\/status\/1778366955885416580\">building<\/a> a censorship state \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/brazil-electoral-court-cracks-down-disinformation-ahead-lula-bolsonaro-runoff-2022-10-20\/\">euphemized<\/a> by American media as \u201ccracking down on disinformation.\u201d Every two-bit dictator in history has justified limiting free expression as a way to curb dangerous disinformation. And, sadly, these are the same types of state intrusions and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/12\/13\/the-first-amendment-is-dying-2\/\">justifications<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2020\/12\/journalists-turn-on-free-expression\/\">we hear<\/a> from the contemporary American left. How are progressives going to condemn Brazil when they\u2019re probably <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/21\/this-country-cannot-afford-a-weak-supreme-court-decision-on-internet-censorship\/\">envious<\/a> of its great strides? <\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the American left has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/48-senators-vow-to-oppose-any-legislation-that-funds-abortion\/\" title=\"48 Senators Vow To Oppose Any Legislation That Funds Abortion\">long tradition<\/a> of treating center-right governments as fascists and socialists as innocuous \u201cdemocratic\u201d entities. Communists have long been celebrated in academia. Hollywood will never stop making romantic biopics about blacklisted Stalin stans. And there have been entire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Longest-Romance-Mainstream-Media-Castro\/dp\/1594036675\/?_encoding=UTF8&#038;pd_rd_w=PFRs3&#038;content-id=amzn1.sym.cf86ec3a-68a6-43e9-8115-04171136930a&#038;pf_rd_p=cf86ec3a-68a6-43e9-8115-04171136930a&#038;pf_rd_r=131-5084651-5996213&#038;pd_rd_wg=SpasV&#038;pd_rd_r=2d7397c7-c87e-4722-aa93-0804fdabda75&#038;ref_=aufs_ap_sc_dsk\">books<\/a> written detailing the American left\u2019s love affair with tyranny in Cuba.<\/p>\n<p>But there is also the recent rise of \u201cdemocratic socialists\u201d such as Bernie Sanders, who\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2020\/02\/bernie-sanders-praise-fidel-castro-why-it-matters\/\">praised <\/a>virtually every murderous communist regime in the world. It was not that long ago that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2013\/03\/hugo-chavezs-cheering-section-088536\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rachel Maddow<\/a>, David Sirota \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2019\/03\/19\/bernie-sanders-david-sirota-venezuela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">author<\/a> of the enduring classic, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2013\/03\/06\/hugo_chavezs_economic_miracle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hugo Chavez\u2019s economic miracle<\/a>\u201d \u2014 and scores of other progressives praised the rise of Venezuelan communists. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-158bde5a643b925b04b7141600e0ac67 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-158bde5a643b925b04b7141600e0ac67\"><\/div>\n<p>Venezuelans, of course, would soon be foraging for their dinners. But socialists will get it right next time, no doubt. <\/p>\n<p>When Meghan McCain, then co-host of \u201cThe View,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2018\/07\/26\/meghan-mccain-right-socialism-leads-misery-destitution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pointed out<\/a> all this out a few years back, she became a target of widespread abuse from the online left, not to mention her dimwitted co-hosts. Last I checked, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/240725\/democrats-positive-socialism-capitalism.aspx#:~:text=WASHINGTON%2C%20D.C.%20%2D%2D%20For%20the,today%20having%20a%20positive%20view.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly 60 percent<\/a> of Democrats have a positive impression of socialism. Let\u2019s just assume that the number in American newsrooms is far higher. <em>Of course<\/em> these people don\u2019t see Lula as an authoritarian.<\/p>\n<p>And though it\u2019s only going to get worse, none of this is exactly new. To understand the double standards, take the case of Nicaragua and Chile.<\/p>\n<p>Long ago, when I was an impressionable young man, the American left was still obsessed with the 1973 Pinochet coup in Chile, even decades after it happened. You might have thought it was the most pivotal moment in the history of the world. Even 50 years later, the left was still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/09\/10\/1193755188\/chile-coup-50-years-pinochet-kissinger-human-rights-allende\">lamenting<\/a> that \u201celected\u201d Marxist\u00a0Salvador Allende was overthrown. Pinochet was, without a doubt, a brutal dictator in the South American tradition. But what made him especially important and relevant was that he saved Chile from communism.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Nicaragua\u2019s Daniel Ortega \u2014 \u00a0strongman, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cidh.org\/countryrep\/Miskitoeng\/toc.htm\">ethnic cleanser<\/a>, and mass murderer \u2014 had come to power through a leftist junta. In the 1980s, Democrats would often pay the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pregnancy-related-deaths-climbed-during-pandemic\/\" title=\"Pregnancy Related Deaths Climbed During Pandemic\">man visits<\/a> to bolster the reputation of Sandinistas. John Kerry \u2014 not some backbencher, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-will-have-to-do-a-lot-more-than-hold-hearings-to-stop-the-rogue-fbi-and-doj\/\" title=\"Republicans Will Have To Do A Lot More Than Hold Hearings To Stop The Rogue FBI And DOJ\">future presidential candidate<\/a> and until recently \u201cClimate Czar\u201d \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424127887324461604578194040827752694\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was a big fan<\/a>. The senator helped sink a $14 million aid package that would have helped Contra revolutionaries. In the meantime, Ortega was in Moscow securing $200 million in support from the Kremlin.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, Nicaragua is now the poorest country in Central America. And Ortega is back to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nicaragua-ortega-human-rights-killings-463bf7e35b9c7d4a0c7dc5c31ff80ece\">murdering<\/a> the political opposition. You\u2019d think such a man deserves <em>at least <\/em>as much attention as Orban, who has yet to murder the political opposition. The Hungarian praises Trump. Ortega <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twincities.com\/2009\/04\/17\/latin-american-leaders-praise-obamas-policy-shift-on-cuba-at-summit-of-the-americas\/\">praises<\/a> Obama. <\/p>\n<p>Chile, by the way, (with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052748703411304575093572032665414\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">help<\/a> of Milton Friedman) is now one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/913999\/south-america-income-per-capita\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">richest<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marcachile.cl\/freedom-house-ranking-highlights-chile-as-one-of-the-freest-countries-in-the-world\/#:~:text=U.S.%20think%20tank%2C%20Freedom%20House,in%20Latin%20America%2C%20following%20Uruguay.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">freest<\/a> nations in South America.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldatlas.com\/articles\/the-poorest-countries-in-south-america.html\">poorest<\/a> countries on that continent are Venezuela and Bolivia.<\/p>\n<p>Which is to say, socialism keeps doing its thing.
