Over the last five years, the library system has been forced to hire 11 security guards. The librarians are even in dispute with their own agency, which asserts that many branches haven\u2019t had security problems, while the librarians claim they are underreported, the natural outcome of knowing prosecutors have little interest in or capability to hold criminals to account.<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, librarians are not equipped to handle rabble-rousers and hooligans. But maybe you are.<\/p>\n<p>That is the thought process of San Francisco\u2019s Bay Area Rapid Transit system. BART has finally stepped up its police presence, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/bart-felony-arrests-up-62-percent-2023-increased-police-presence-trains\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"recording\">recording<\/a> 726 felony arrests last year (almost two per day) and confiscating 49 illegal guns, the most since 2003. Still, it hasn\u2019t been enough, leading BART to promote \u201cbystander intervention cards\u201d that encourage civilians to \u201cstand with\u201d women being harassed on BART trains.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<blockquote data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If someone is harassing you in a way that makes you feel unsafe, hand a person close to you the \ud83d\udd39 blue \u201cYou Got Me?\u201d card to ask for their help. The card offers options for ways they might help you. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SW2frsJymo\">pic.twitter.com\/SW2frsJymo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 BART (@SFBART) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SFBART\/status\/1773837127874162775?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 29, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sure, you may be asked to put yourself in harm\u2019s way because San Francisco has lost control of crime, but at least you <em>probably<\/em> won\u2019t be arrested and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/2444060\/why-would-anyone-try-to-stop-a-violent-assault-on-new-york-city-subways-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"charged\">charged<\/a> with murder for it. After all, it\u2019s not New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Ideally, civilians and librarians should not be tasked with providing security. That should be the job of police with the backing of prosecutors, but that has been too hard of a pill for San Francisco to swallow over the last few years.
