The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives intends to \u200dimplement this rule within \u206330 days. It will be implemented in 30 days, Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/04\/11\/biden-gun-show-firearms-rule-00151655\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s a false choice to suggest that you\u2019re either in favor of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone\u2019s guns away,\u201d Harris insisted. \u201cI\u2019m in favor of the Second Amendment, and I am in favor of reasonable gun safety laws \u2014 for example, background checks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCurrently, gun stores are required by law to conduct a background check for every gun sale.\u00a0 But, for decades, many dealers who sell weapons someplace other than the traditional gun store \u2014 say, for example, a gun show or a flea market or even through social media \u2014 have gotten away without conducting background checks.\u00a0 This is the so-called \u2018gun show loophole,\u2019\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harris then added more items to her gun control checklist: \u201cPresident Joe Biden and I will continue to call on the United States Congress to have the courage to pass universal background checks, red-flag laws, and an assault weapons ban.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The idea of implementing red-flag laws \u2014 which permit confiscation of forearms if the owner is deemed a threat to themselves or others \u2014 \u00a0on a federal level has been criticized for giving the government too much power.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Rand Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/research\/gun-policy\/analysis\/ban-assault-weapons\/mass-shootings.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a> in January 2023, \u201cEvidence for the effect of assault weapon bans on mass shootings is inconclusive.
