Boaler leads the Youcubed center at \u200dStanford, advocating equitable math\u2062 education.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>Professor Jo Boaler misrepresented research in her work, complaint alleges<\/h2>\n<figure><figcaption> \t\t\t\t \t\t\t\tStanford professor Jo Boaler (stanford.edu)\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Stanford University has opened an investigation into allegations that California\u2019s prominent &#8220;math equity&#8221; advocate, math education professor Jo Boaler, misused research to support contentious claims that underpin her work, according to an email obtained by the <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are very aware of the current controversy surrounding Professor Boaler\u2019s work,&#8221; Stanford\u2019s vice president of alumni affairs wrote to a university alum who had reached out to officials with concerns about the allegations. &#8220;At the same time, we are firm believers in academic freedom at Stanford and grant our faculty wide latitude in pursuing their research and scholarship. We are consequently reviewing these anonymous allegations with that in mind.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Boaler herself spoke up about the <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/california\/san-francisco-cited-this-professor-to-end-8th-grade-algebra-her-research-had-reckless-disregard-for-accuracy-complaint-alleges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">complaint<\/a> on Monday, weeks after it was filed in March. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youcubed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Boaler-Statement-4.8.24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> branded with the Stanford logo, Boaler said the allegations are &#8220;the same pattern of attack used against Black DEI faculty at Harvard.&#8221; She referred to the <em>Free Beacon,<\/em> which first reported on the complaint, as a &#8220;far-right publication&#8221; and criticized a media report from the <em>Chronicle of Higher Education<\/em> as a &#8220;shoddy and indolent journalistic approach.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Stanford did not respond to multiple requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Boaler, who teaches at the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/andy-ngo-unmasks-antifa\/\" title=\"Andy Ngo Unmasks Antifa\">graduate school<\/a> of education, allegedly misrepresented citations to support some of her contentious claims, including that timed tests cause math anxiety and that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/rep-thomas-massie-brings-back-a-2017-proposal-to-do-away-with-the-department-of-education\/\" title=\"Rep. Thomas Massie brings back a 2017 proposal to do away with the Department of Education\">students perform<\/a> better if they aren\u2019t graded. In her statement, she said the allegations &#8220;demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of educational research approaches, or a simple difference in interpretation of results,&#8221; adding that she and &#8220;many others who have read their accusations&#8221; do not believe they &#8220;show any evidence of \u2018academic misconduct.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Boaler leads a research center at Stanford called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youcubed.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Youcubed<\/a>, which produces teacher trainings, school curricula, summer camps, and more based on her work to promote &#8220;equitable&#8221; approaches to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/virtue-signaling-your-way-to-woke-sainthood-megyn-kelly-slams-bill-gates-over-education-agenda\/\" title=\"\u2018Virtue Signaling Your Way To Woke Sainthood\u2019: Megyn Kelly Slams Bill Gates Over Education Agenda\">teaching math<\/a>. Youcubed online courses for teachers can start as high as $1,800 per person, and upcoming events include a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/webinar-building-mathematical-mindsets-strategies-for-parents-guardians-tickets-810843594017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> May 16 webinar<\/a> featuring Boaler and Yolande Beckles\u2014a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.piratewires.com\/p\/yolande-beckles-scammer-california-education-system\">woman<\/a> who has several court judgments against her for financial fraud from the U.K. and who has rebranded herself as an &#8220;equity&#8221; education advocate in California after scamming \u00a312,000 from poor British children.<\/p>\n<p>Boaler has been an &#8220;equity&#8221; advocate for years and was the most prominent author of the recently adopted, &#8220;social justice&#8221;-focused <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/teaching-toward-social-justice-californias-new-math-framework-aims-to-create-equitable-outcomes-between-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California math framework<\/a>, which seeks to guide the math instruction for the state\u2019s nearly six <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/shocking-data-shows-school-closures-caused-severe-learning-loss-for-children-around-the-globe\/\" title=\"Shocking Data Shows School Closures Caused Severe Learning Loss For Children Around The Globe\">million public school students<\/a>. The framework is viewed by critics as undercutting math teaching standards in the name of equity.<\/p>\n<p>Through her Youcubed newsletter, Boaler in 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/youcubed\/new-mathematics-framework-for-california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">touted<\/a> the framework\u2019s &#8220;social justice&#8221; approach, including the guidance\u2014which was removed before final approval\u2014that advanced middle schoolers shouldn\u2019t be offered more challenging courses. She celebrated these ideas as potentially a &#8220;new mathematics future for students in California (and possibly beyond).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She was also cited as a leading influence in San Francisco public schools\u2019 decision to quit teaching 8th grade algebra\u2014a policy that led to disastrous results and is in the process of being reversed. Boaler has distanced herself from the policy, saying she has always supported teaching 8th grade algebra, in a contradiction of past statements.\t<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, after rolling out the algebra ban, the school district <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SFUSDMath\/status\/576437364177825792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">credited<\/a> her and her Stanford research for &#8220;helping us stay strong.&#8221; And in 2019, Boaler <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/article\/it-time-detrack-math\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was quoted by<\/a> the George Lucas Educational Foundation as a &#8220;Stanford University mathematics education professor and researcher who has worked with the district.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;San Francisco had a strong team of math coaches and leaders who knew what research was telling them and decided to take it on,&#8221; Boaler said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stanford investigates allegations that Professor Jo Boaler misrepresented research in her math equity advocacy work.
