Matt Gress, a Phoenix-area Republican, to begin the repeal process got waylaid by a GOP motion to recess, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.12news.com\/article\/news\/politics\/lawmakers-try-fail-start-repeal-arizona-abortion-ban\/75-06535cfe-1876-4e5e-8d98-f624e1bfeb99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">local NBC affiliate KPNX<\/a>. Stephanie Stahl Hamilton, who is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azleg.gov\/legtext\/56leg\/2R\/bills\/HB2677P.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">top sponsor<\/a> of a one-line bill that would repeal the abortion law, brought the motion to the floor again in the afternoon, but the House adjourned until next Wednesday on a roll call vote.<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/story\/5569775\/shouts-of-shame-shame-erupt-in-arizona-house-as-fight-over-abortion-ban-engulfs-lawmakers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> Gress is one of three GOP legislators who openly oppose the ban. He said the near-total ban \u201cis not reflective of the values of the vast majority of our electorate, regardless of political affiliation. \u2026 This issue transcends all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gress got some flak from his GOP colleagues for trying to bring the motion to the floor. State Rep. Alexander Kolodin, a Republican, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realAlexKolodin\/status\/1778165387424899425\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused<\/a> Gress of putting \u201chis Republican comrades in swing districts in the line of fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Arizona\u2019s GOP-led Senate, Democrats claimed they stood to try and start a repeal of the abortion law right. KPNX reported this was right before the chamber was going to adjourn, and President Pro Tempore T.J. Shope, a Republican, gaveled out until next Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>A Senate GOP spokesperson told the news outlet that the Democrats \u201cwere not recognized because the motion before the body was the motion to adjourn. A substitution motion would have been procedurally improper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovernorHobbs\/status\/1778166990643077315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> the \u201cextremist Republican majority had the chance to do the right thing for their constituents, and they failed.\u201d She also insisted the \u201cfight is far from over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/arizona-supreme-court-upholds-1864-law-protecting-unborn-babies-from-abortion-in-nearly-all-cases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">upheld<\/a> on Tuesday an 1864 law that outlaws all abortions in the state, except when the mother\u2019s life is at risk, and makes those performing an illegal abortion liable to face two to five years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>While pro-life advocates cheered the ruling, several high-profile Republicans opposed it. Former President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/trump-says-arizona-abortion-law-goes-too-far-that-will-be-straightened-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> it goes too far. Arizona GOP Senate candidate Kari Lake and Rep. David Schweikert (R-AZ) also said they oppose Tuesday\u2019s ruling.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-describedby=\"sk-tooltip-9096\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onelink.to\/dwapp&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1700760801843000&#038;usg=AOvVaw2PQrVSrJfhxNb4LcARqniG\">CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen and House Speaker Ben Toma, both Republicans, released a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AZSenateGOP\/status\/1777771918105731586\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> after the ruling explaining that the law did not immediately go into effect and that they would use the interim to have lawmakers deliberate on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court decision was \u201cbased solely on the text of the law \u2014 it was not a policy statement,\u201d they said. \u201cIt\u2019s important to note, there is at least a 60-day waiting period before any change in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/arizona-republicans-block-effort-to-rush-repeal-of-1864-state-abortion-ban\/\" title=\"Arizona Republicans have prevented the quick repeal of the 1864 state abortion ban\">existing law occurs<\/a>.
